A&O Shearman and White & Case lead M&A legal advisory in Middle East & Africa in H1 2025
A&O Shearman and White & Case emerged as the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal advisers in the Middle East & Africa during the first half of 2025, according to the latest legal advisers league table by GlobalData. The analysis of GlobalData's deals database shows that A&O Shearman secured its top position by advising on deals worth $2.8bn. In terms of volume, White & Case led with eight deals. GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: 'White & Case registered an improvement in the total number of deals advised by it during H1 2025 compared to H1 2024. Resultantly, its ranking by volume also improved from the second position in H1 2024 to the top position in H1 2025. Apart from leading by volume, White & Case also occupied the third position by value. 'Meanwhile, A&O Shearman, which was the top adviser by value in H1 2024, also managed to retain its leadership position by this metric in H1 2025. Apart from leading by value, A&O Shearman also held the fifth position by volume during H1 2025.' Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom ranked second in terms of value, advising on $2.5bn worth of deals. White & Case followed closely with $2.4bn, alongside Paul Hastings at $2.4bn and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer at $2.3bn. In terms of volume, Baker McKenzie secured the second position with six deals. Dentons and DLA Piper followed with four deals each, while A&O Shearman completed three deals. GlobalData's league tables are based on the real-time tracking of thousands of company websites, advisory firm websites and other reliable sources available on the secondary domain. A dedicated team of analysts monitors all these sources to gather in-depth details for each deal, including adviser names. Saudi Arabia Approves Major New Airline Based in Dammam
Another new airline is coming to Saudi, but this time it's a low-cost option. Based out of the eastern city of Dammam and led by Air Arabia, it will enter an increasingly crowded market. A new low-cost airline is coming to Saudi Arabia. The country's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has awarded an operating license to a consortium led by Air Arabia, Nesma Group, and KUN Holding. The joint venture, announced in a series of posts on GACA's X account, and operate a low-cost carrier based at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. The project is aimed at boosting domestic and international connectivity from the country's Eastern Province. The airline is targeting 24 domestic and 57 international routes by the end of the decade. Its goal is to serve 10 million passengers annually by 2030, using a fleet of 45 aircraft. High-profile Kenyan activist faces terror charges over anti-government protests
Prominent Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi is due in court on accusations of "facilitation of terrorist acts" during last month's deadly anti-government protests in which at least 19 people died. On Sunday, investigators said they had seized phones, a laptop, and notebooks from Mr Mwangi's Lukenya home on the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi, and hard drives, computers, tear gas canisters and a blank firearm round from his office in the city. His arrest has sparked a wave of condemnation, with human rights groups denouncing it was aimed at suppressing opposition voices. The activist has denied the accusations, saying in a post on X: "I am not a terrorist." According to the Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Mr Mwangi stands accused of "offences related to facilitation of terrorist acts and unlawful possession of ammunition". The alleged offences are linked to the 25 June protests when, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), 19 people died as demonstrators clashed with police. Hundreds were also injured and property and businesses were damaged. In the aftermath, Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen described the demonstrations as "terrorism disguised as dissent" and an "unconstitutional attempt" to change the government. At least 38 more people were killed in subsequent protests earlier this month, the KNHCR has said. Since June last year, more than 100 people have been killed in successive waves of anti-government protests, with police accused of using excessive force to quell unrest. On Sunday, a coalition of 37 rights organisations condemned Mr Mwangi's arrest on "unjustified terrorism allegations", describing it as the "latest escalation in a systematic crackdown that has seen hundreds of young Kenyans detained on fabricated terrorism charges". "What began as targeted persecution of young protesters demanding accountability has metastasized into a full-scale assault on Kenya's democracy," they said in a joint statement. James Orengo, a veteran politician and governor of Siaya county, said it was "ridiculous to charge Boniface Mwangi and our children who have demonstrated a high level of political consciousness with terrorism". Mr Mwangi has been detained multiple times in the past, and has been at the centre of many protests. In May, he and a Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire were detained in Tanzania, where they had travelled to attend the trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is accused of treason. Following their release several days later, both said they had been abducted, tortured and sexually assaulted.
