Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas on why Comet browser can beat Google's Project Mariner: ‘Expect them to copy…'
Asked about the competition between Google and Perplexity during a Reddit AMA, Srinivas said, 'They have something called Project Mariner (behind a $250/mo plan, I believe) – similar but quite limited compared to the capabilities of Comet.'
'I expect them to pay close attention and copy/adopt stuff,' he added.
Srinivas confirmed that Comet is built on Chromium and expressed that he is 'grateful' to Google for keeping it open-source. However, he criticised the company for being too bureaucratic and disjointed.
'It's a giant bureaucratic organisation right now with too many decision-makers and disjointed teams, and they have business model constraints on letting agents do the clicks and work for you while continuing to charge advertisers enormous money to keep bidding for clicks and conversions. At some point, they need to embrace one path and suffer, in order to come out stronger, rather than hedging and playing both ways,' Srinivas said.
Perplexity launched the Comet browser earlier this month, and it is currently available only to paying users, while free users are being given access gradually via invites.
Srinivas was also asked about when Perplexity plans to launch iOS and Android versions of the Comet browser. While he remained non-committal about the exact timeline for Android, he stated that iPhone users could see the new browser in the next two to three months.
When asked if Comet will be available to free users, Srinivas said, 'Comet will be accessible for free users definitely. But the agentic search and personal/memory searches might be either rate-limited or exclusive to Pro/Max users. We haven't made any decisions yet. We need to first understand what's the spend per user in the initial cohort.'

DuckDuckGo adds AI image filter and scam blocker to boost privacy and safety
DuckDuckGo is rolling out a new setting on their privacy-focused search engine where the user can filter AI images in search results. The feature was introduced following customer feedback who reported the inconvenience caused by AI images in search results. To access the new feature, users need to select the Images tab, which will show a drop-down with the option 'AI Images'. Later, users can either pick 'show' or 'hide' to indicate if they wish to view AI content in their search results. By selecting the 'Hide AI-Generated Images' option in their search preferences, users can activate the filter. DuckDuckGo's latest functionality coincides with the proliferation of AI slop, meaning low-quality media content created with generative AI on the internet. According to a post on X by DuckDuckGo, 'the filter relies on manually curated open-source blocklists, including the 'nuclear' list, provided by uBlockOrigin and uBlacklist Huge AI Blocklist.' It will significantly reduce the quantity of AI-generated images a user sees, even though it may not capture all AI-generated results. DuckDuckGo has made more than one improvement this week. The second tool serves as a wall restricting a variety of online threats and fraudulent online stores, false currency exchanges, scam survey websites, and those prompts of 'your device is infected'. The tool will prevent such websites from loading if a user happens to click on a questionable link. It displays a warning, informing them that the page has been reported for attempting to trick visitors into paying for fake items, installing harmful software, or giving over their money. In the post title, "How I Bought Two Apartments (Noida & Bengaluru) and Became Debt-Free by 35," the man explained that his story is not a 'rags-to-riches' tale; rather, it's a "kept-going-when-it-was-easier-to-quit" tale. "I was never the brightest kid. I was the kind of student teachers used as an example of what not to become. Born in 1990 in Jhumka City, Bareilly, I was constantly in trouble, always underperforming, and barely scraping through exams with written promises from my parents to do better next time," he wrote. He also explained that his percentage from high school till his graduation stayed between 60-70, and he did not qualify for IIT.
