'And we did OK,' Kraft added, a joking reference to the unprecedented six Super Bowl wins and 17 division titles. (The actual date of the Belichick trade fell in Jan. 2000, not 1999).

On Wednesday,
'As I told Robert multiple times through the years, I took a big risk by taking the New England Patriots head coaching job,' Belichick told Van Natta Jr. 'I already had an opportunity to be the head coach of the New York Jets, but the ownership situation was unstable.'

Belichick claimed that he had been cautioned about taking the Patriots' head coaching role in early 2000 by other coaches.
'I had been warned by multiple previous Patriots coaches, as well as other members of other NFL organizations and the media, that the New England job was going to come with many internal obstacles,' said Belichick. 'I made it clear that we would have to change the way the team was managed to regain the previously attained success.'
In his first season, Belichick's Patriots went 5-11. But in 2001, thanks also to the unforeseen rise of Tom Brady, New England made an unexpected run to (and won) the Super Bowl. After that, the Patriots went almost two decades without a losing season. Belichick finished an astounding 266-121 (.687) in the regular season as the team's head coach, and engineered nine Super Bowl appearances.
'I appreciated Robert giving me the opportunity to make those changes and build a program that was consistent with my vision for a championship team,' Belichick noted.
Belichick went 36-44 (.450) during his Browns tenure, which had been his only other NFL head coaching role prior to the Patriots. And Kraft's memory of the criticism that the move elicited is
Still, Belichick helped direct the Patriots' defense in a Super Bowl run under Bill Parcells in the 1996 season, and had gone on to help Parcells turn the Jets around prior to leaving New York.
'The Jets were a solid team after three years of rebuilding under Bill Parcells, which included an AFC Championship Game appearance in [January] 1999,' Belichick added in his response to ESPN. 'Meanwhile, the Patriots Organization had dismantled their 1996 AFC Championship team and became one of the worst in the AFC. It didn't help that they were $10 million over the cap heading into my first season as Head Coach in 2000.'

Yet Belichick sought an escape from New York, with Kraft eventually paying the price that Parcells (then working as Jets general manager) demanded. The trade has since been regarded as
As for what he specifically thinks Kraft meant by calling his hiring a 'big risk,' Belichick responded to Van Natta Jr. with characteristic economy.
'You'll have to ask Robert.'

Patriots reportedly signing former Rams DT ahead of training camp

The New England Patriots are reportedly boosting their defensive front by signing former Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle David Olajiga to a deal. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the news on Sunday. Olajiga, an English native, will be joining the team through the International Pathway Program. The move comes a couple of days before the Patriots' veterans are slated to report to training camp. Olajiga will be joining a much-improved Patriots defensive front spearheaded by Christian Barmore and Milton Williams. Rookie defensive tackle Joshua Farmer is expected to factor in significantly as well. The 27-year-old international defender will be looking to work his way in as a rotational piece or depth option for the Patriots. The Patriots were the worst team in the league in sack percentage, and they also ranked in the bottom half in rushing defense last season. So they are clearly looking to get more push up front and dominate in the trenches. Training camp is about opportunities and making the most of them. We'll see what Olajiga makes of his opportunity this summer. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Lions' starting DT Levi Onwuzurike will miss 2025 season with torn ACL

Last season, injuries derailed a season with Super Bowl expectations for the Detroit Lions. This season is already off to a troubling start for the Lions' defense. Defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike will miss the 2025-26 season with a torn ACL, head coach Dan Campbell announced on Sunday. It was a "significant" injury, in Campbell's words, and Onwuzurike has already undergone surgery to repair the tear. The Lions were already missing defensive tackle Alim McNeill, who tore his ACL in Week 15's loss to the Buffalo Bills last season. He'll begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and could return toward the end of the year. Onwuzurike has struggled with injuries ever since Detroit made him their second-round draft pick in 2021 out of Washington. He missed the entire 2022 campaign with a back injury that required spinal fusion surgery. However, he finally broke through with a solid 2024-25 season, playing 16 games and starting 10. He notched 28 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits and a tackle for loss. Campbell says he's still confident in the Lions' depth on the defensive line. The team drafted Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams in the first round (No. 28 overall), who should start on the interior line alongside DJ Reader. Williams had 46 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his senior season with the Buckeyes. "You don't like to lose anybody," Campbell said, via the Detroit Free Press. "Certainly, losing Levi, that hurts, but it helps that we've got Tyleik, so we've got a little bit of balance here." "All in all, I think we're pretty good," he added. "I like what we got in that room and really there again, man, we got an opportunity for a lot of guys." Roy Lopez, Pat O'Connor and Chris Smith are expected to contribute at defensive tackle. Meanwhile, the Lions are expected to get Aidan Hutchinson back on the edge, coming back from a broken leg. He should start at defensive end along with Marcus Davenport. The team is also looking at bringing back Za'Darius Smith, whom Detroit traded for last season but eventually cut. Detroit has also been in discussions with veteran edge rusher Matthew Judon, according to the Detroit Free Press.
