'Great club legend' Lucas Vázquez ending long stint with Real Madrid
The club and the player said Wednesday that he is not returning for another season.

'I'm leaving Real Madrid, but Real Madrid will never leave me," Vázquez said on social media. "Wherever I go, I will proudly say that I had the honor of playing for the best team in the world. Thank you for joining me on the most beautiful journey of my life.'
Madrid is preparing a farewell ceremony on Thursday for the 34-year-old Vázquez.
'Real Madrid would like to express our gratitude and affection to Lucas Vázquez, one of the great legends of our club,' it said in a statement.
Vázquez is one of the winningest players with Madrid, having helped the club capture 23 titles, including five Champions Leagues and four Spanish leagues. He made 402 appearances, playing mostly as a right back but also as a forward, attacking midfielder and contributing off the bench.

'Lucas Vázquez represents in an exemplary way the values of Real Madrid, which has made him one of the most loved players by our fans," club president Florentino Pérez said.
"The figure of Lucas Vázquez symbolizes the hard work, perseverance, humility and winning spirit that are essential for success in this shirt. He is a player who has the affection and recognition of all madridistas. Real Madrid is and always will be his home.'
Vázquez joined the club's youth academy in 2007 as a 16-year-old. After a season on loan at Espanyol, he made his debut with Madrid's first team in 2015.
He did not immediately announce his plans for the future.

Madrid is coming off a disappointing season by its high standards, losing the Spanish league title to Barcelona and failing to reach the final in the Club World Cup or the Champions League.

The 27-year-old Onwuzurike started in a career-high 11 games last season, including Detroit's loss to Washington in the divisional round. His playing time increased when McNeill had a season-ending knee injury in December. McNeill, who signed a $97 million, four-year contract extension last October, is out indefinitely. Onwuzurike's injury gives rookie defensive tackle Tyleik Williams a chance to play a significant role when the two-time defending NFC North champions kick off the season Sept. 7 at Green Bay. Detroit drafted the former Ohio State standout with the 28th pick overall in the NFL draft. The 6-foot-3, 334-pound Williams started 13 games for the national champion Buckeyes and had 46 tackles, including eight for losses and 2 1/2 sacks. Real Madrid retain interest in Premier League defender
There has been a lot of noise surrounding Real Madrid's interest in Ibrahima Konate lately. The Frenchman is currently in the final year of his contract at Liverpool, with multiple reports suggesting that he will join Real Madrid as a free agent next summer. Real Madrid are interested in signing Konate this summer as well, but Liverpool are holding out for a hefty price tag for the French international. However, Konate is not the only Premier League centre-back Real Madrid are keeping an eye on. Real Madrid remain interested in Saliba According to L'Equipe, Real Madrid are also monitoring the progress of William Saliba, who had emerged as the club's top defensive target earlier in the summer. Real Madrid, in fact, were determined to sign Saliba as part of their plans to shore up their defensive unit. However, he ended up becoming too expensive for the club. Former NFLPA executive committee member says JC Tretter "seems just as culpable" as Lloyd Howell
There's a storm raging within the NFL Players Association, and at times it feels as if we're in the eye of it. The vast majority of texts and calls to the PFT hotline since the resignation of NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell relate to the next steps for the union. There's plenty of noise, some of which has been posted here — and plenty of which (at least for now) has not been. Our goal isn't to tee up names or play the Game of Thrones game. It's to make sure the players understand what's happening and, ideally, that they reclaim control of their union. Because it seems that both the NFL and NFLPA non-player leadership have weaponized player apathy, any sign that the players are waking up and taking charge is significant. Here's something that has happened within the past day. Sam Acho — a former member of the NFLPA executive committee — has sounded the alarm via Twitter. "Players who are voting," Acho said, "I understand you've been kept out of the loop. Listen to [the Pablo Torre Finds Out] podcast or read the article by [Kalyn Kahler of JC Tretter seems just as culpable (if not more) than Lloyd Howell." The Acho tweet tags five current members of the board of player representatives: Zaven Collins, Von Miller, Shelby Harris, Cole Kmet, and Zaire Franklin. Acho's plea comes at a time when a text message critical of Tretter has been making the rounds. A longer document entitled "Risk Assessment of NFLPA Interim Executive Director Candidates" (which focuses only on Tretter) has been circulating, along with rumors that Tretter could be pushing for current NFL Players Inc. president Matt Curtin to become the interim executive director, since Curtin would be likely to keep Tretter in position as chief strategy officer. Meanwhile, the NFLPA has remained largely silent. There's been nothing from NFLPA president Jaylen Reeves-Maybin. Nothing from Tretter. The executive committee's only statement came a week ago, when it vowed to not rush to judgment on Howell. It's therefore very noteworthy that a former member of the executive committee has decided to publicly share his opinions in a public forum, with five members of the board of players representatives specifically mentioned.
