Patrick Mahomes hopes Trey Hendrickson gets paid... but maybe by another team
FTW spoke to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in June as part of his new partnership with T-Mobile for its Friday Night 5G Lights initiative, and he mentioned Hendrickson as his pick for an underrated player he loved getting to play against in the NFL.
He also mentioned Hendrickson's contract negotiations with Cincinnati and shared he's pulling for him to get his next big career windfall.
"I would say he was underrated at the time; he's not anymore," Mahomes shared, "Trey Hendrickson and going up against him over my time, with the Bengals. I think no one really talked about him until these last year and a half, and obviously [there's] the contract stuff he has going now, but that dude is just a straight beast.
"I remember playing him when he was in New Orleans with the Saints, and then playing against him now in Cincinnati. I mean, he is as good as advertised. He gets some hype I think now, but I don't think people really, truly understand the impact he has on the football game."
Hendrickson's future in Cincinnati is still uncertain, but it sure sounds like Mahomes hopes he gets paid... and maybe by a team that doesn't play the Chiefs so regularly.
"Hopefully, he gets his contract, but hopefully, maybe it's not with Cincinnati," Mahomes joked. "I think it would help me out a little but if I wasn't playing that guy every single year. but he's a great competitor, man. He's always fun to go up against."

Alex Anzalone passed conditioning test, but didn't practice Sunday
Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone was not among the players that the team placed on the physically unable to perform or non-football injury lists ahead of their first training camp practice, but Anzalone did not take part in Sunday's session. Head coach Dan Campbell said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, that Anzalone "crushed" the team's conditioning test after skipping the team's voluntary work this offseason. Anzalone's absence was linked to his contract. Anzalone is heading into the final year of his three-year, $18 million deal with the team and he's made comments suggesting that he'd like an upgraded contract before the start of the 2025 season. Campbell told reporters that he does not think that Anzalone is holding in by reporting to camp and not practicing in a bid to land that contract, but it remains to be seen when the veteran will be back on the field for Detroit.

Chiefs scouting report: Texas Tech Red Raiders DE David Bailey
The Kansas City Chiefs stayed true to their preferences when they selected Ashton Gillotte over more explosive pass rushers in the 2025 NFL draft. The front office might still be haunted by missing on Felix Anudike-Uzomah, but Kansas City needs to diversify its defensive end room. Fortunately, the 2026 NFL draft features several high-ranking, athletic sack artists. David Bailey began his career at Stanford before transferring to Texas Tech for the upcoming season. Draft analysts view him as one of the top edge rushers in the class. The Athletic's Dane Brugler recently ranked him in the top five for prospects at the position. The 2026 draft features several other explosive rushers, including Anto Saka, R Mason Thomas and Boubacar Traore, but Bailey is the best version of that archetype. Bailey accelerates off the line of scrimmage with an explosive first step that generates some instantaneous wins. Offensive linemen struggle to match his speed up the arc. The phrase 'if he's even, he's leaving' usually refers to wide receivers beating cornerbacks, but it applies to Bailey's style of play too. Even if the offensive tackle keeps pace, Bailey's springy agility helps him work across the lineman's face and into the B-gap for a counterattack. Bailey's loose frame bends low to the ground to dip under the offensive tackle's hands and flatten his rush angle to the quarterback. This is an element largely absent from Kansas City's current pass rush rotation, which focuses on defensive ends, like Gillotte and George Karlaftis, who build their rush plans around power. Bailey's pass rush plan includes club-swims, rips, speed rushes around the corner or through the B-gap, swipe-rips and a developmental spin move. He lacks the bulk to consistently win with bull rushes but generates some push by converting speed to power. Bailey's pass rush arsenal is still incomplete, but his skill set complements Kansas City's current defensive end room. Bailey isn't a high-level run defender, but his speed and range make him a threat to pursue screen plays or running backs downfield. Lions lose defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike for season with torn ACL
After a brutal 2024 season of injuries on defense, the Lions' 2025 is off to a disappointing start. Lions defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike suffered a torn ACL and will miss the entire season, head coach Dan Campbell announced today. Onwuzurike opened camp on the reserve/physically unable to perform list but it was only today that Campbell explained why. "Levi is out for the year. Levi's surgery, it was significant, but it needed to be done. Out of his control but it needed to be done, so he will miss the season," Campbell said. "It was a knee, ACL, so he got that taken care of." Onwuzurike has spent his entire career with the Lions, who drafted him in the second round in 2021. Last year he was one of the few Lions defenders who stayed healthy, missing only one game and playing in 61 percent of the Lions' defensive snaps.
