Gene Winfield, ‘Blade Runner' Custom Car Designer, Dies at 97

Yahoo12-03-2025
Gene Winfield, a custom car designer for films such as 'Blade Runner' and 'Robocop,' died on March 4. He was 97.
The news was confirmed via his obituary on Legacy.com.
Winfield became known as the 'King of Kustoms' after working on some of Hollywood's most iconic cars. He opened his first custom shop in the 1940s and his career spanned over eight decades.
Over the years, he became the go-to man when Hollywood needed cars, especially futuristic ones. He worked on the 'Super Car' in a 1967 episode of 'Bewitched.'
The car became known as the Retractor and appeared in an episode of 'Star Trek: The Original Series' as Jupiter 8 and an episode of 'Mission: Impossible.' It also became Catwoman's Catmobile in 'Batman.'
Winfield also designed the vehicle used in 'Get Smart' and customized a Piranha for 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'
His custom vehicles were featured in 'The Last Starfighter' and 'Robocop.' Perhaps his most recognizable cars were seen in 'Blade Runner' for which he created the flying cop cars known as 'spinners.'
According to HotRod magazine, he was born in Springfield, Mo., and was the youngest of six children born to Frank and Virginia 'Ginny' Winfield. The obit says he bought his first car at age 15, a $75 1928 Model A coupe that he painted dark blue. He customized that and installed dual antennas and foxtails, even though the car had no radio.
The hot-rod community bestowed accolades on him including the National Hot Rod Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Corvette silenced in Europe — at least at start

General Motors' big, brash Corvette has been silenced in Europe for the first time — at least up to the first 70 kph (44 mph). The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray hybrid launched in Europe with a 'stealth' mode that allows it to start on electric power for silent getaways. 'It's good for neighbor relations when you leave early in the morning,' GM Europe President Pere Brugal said at the supercar's launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 10. The new model adds a 162-hp electric motor on the front axle mated to a 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery to create the first all-wheel-drive Corvette. Sign up for the Automotive News Europe Focus on Electrification newsletter, a weekly wrap-up of the latest electric vehicle news, including interviews and global EV sales data. Overall power is 644 hp and the 0 to 100 kph time is 2.9 seconds, making the E-Ray the quickest production Corvette available in Europe. The price in the U.K. is £153,440 ($206,000) for the coupe variant, undercutting the Z06 but far above the standard V-8 model at £92,890. Both coupe and convertible versions of the E-Ray will be sold across Chevrolet's 18 European markets. The hybrid technology gives the U.S. automaker an answer to the increasing number of electrified supercars from European rivals. 'We think the timing is perfect,' Brugal said. 'The hybrid supercar market is experiencing huge growth.' Half of the models sold in Europe's exotic segment were plug-in hybrids in the first six months of the year, marking 49 percent growth for PHEVs, preliminary figures from market researcher Dataforce show. Some were SUVs, topped by the BMW XM, but electrified supercars also include the segment's No. 4 seller, the Ferrari 296 GTS, as well as the Ferrari SF90, Lamborghini Revuelto and McLaren Artura. Lamborghini's new Temerario, a replacement for the Huracan, will also be a PHEV. The E-Ray is a hybrid rather than a PHEV, but the model will also compete with the new Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid. Like the E-Ray, the 911 hybrid will have a 1.9-kWh battery pack. The Corvette was GM's bestselling car in Europe in the first half of the year, with volume of 338 — 39 sales ahead of the Cadillac Lyriq full-electric SUV, according to Dataforce figures. No other models have so far been offered by Cadillac in its launch markets of France, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. More markets and models are coming, but Cadillac is in no rush to announce them. 'We're not here to push metal,' Brugal said. GM returned to Europe in 2024 with Cadillac after exiting the market in 2017 with the sale of its Opel and Vauxhall subsidiaries to PSA Group. Opel and Vauxhall are now part of Stellantis. Premium rivals to BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz — along with JLR and Volvo — have found it difficult to gain traction in Europe, but Brugal insists that customers will be lured to Cadillac by the combination of design, brand awareness and technology. Cadillac has yet to offer its Super Cruise hands-off, eyes-on semi-autonomous driving system in Europe, but that will change next year, Brugal said. GM has a fleet of vehicles testing Super Cruise on Europe's major highways with the aim of following Ford, which already offers its similar BlueCruise system in certain models, including the Mustang Mach-E full-electric SUV. Last year, Ford said it won permission to offer BlueCruise in 15 European Union countries over 133,000 kilometers (82,744 miles) of Blue Zones.

Real-life ‘RoboCop' makes debut in Shanghai — directing traffic at bustling intersection

It's not armed, but this 'RoboCop' is keeping cars and pedestrians in line on Shanghai's busiest streets. A humanoid robot dressed like a police officer manned a busy intersection in Shanghai's bustling Huangpu District on Wednesday evening — drawing the attention of drivers and pedestrians alike. During the demonstration, the robot — sporting what looked like an oversize white helmet and a can't-miss outfit with LED tube lighting and reflective yellow fabric — gave voice instructions to pedestrians. Those included 'Red light, please stop,' and standard hand signals to direct foot traffic across the intersection. 3 Xiao Hu, a humanoid robot in police uniform, uses hand signals to direct foot traffic at a Shanghai intersection on Wednesday. Shanghai Let's Meet / Facebook The robot's physical movements and verbal commands are likewise modeled on traditional traffic policing practices in China. The appearance of the robot — nicknamed 'Xiao Hu' (pronounced 'Shyow Hoo') or 'Little Tiger' — marked a trial phase rather than an official deployment, according to the Shanghai Public Security Bureau's Traffic Management Department. In addition to directing traffic, Xiao Hu can provide directions to pedestrians and answer basic questions related to traffic laws. 3 Crowds gather as robot traffic cop Xiao Hu issues voice prompts and manages nighttime traffic in downtown Shanghai. Shanghai Let's Meet / Facebook The Shanghai Public Security Bureau's Traffic Management Department said the robot's appearance on was part of a 'real-world learning exercise for traffic management scenarios.' Developed over four years, the robot is still undergoing testing. But officials appear eager to eventually use the machines to replace human officers in heavily trafficked areas or during large-scale events. 3 The humanoid robot Xiao Hu guides pedestrians during a real-world trial on East Nanjing Road. Shanghai Let's Meet / Facebook No timeline has been announced for a broader deployment of the robot, and officials did not comment on whether Xiao Hu or similar machines will be introduced in other districts of the city. The introduction of Xiao Hu comes amid broader efforts in China to incorporate automation and AI into public safety and governance. The Shanghai Public Security Bureau said the robot represents 'a new technological approach to traffic control,' suggesting that further innovations may be introduced as the city continues to develop its smart city infrastructure.

Andy Samberg reacts to Lorne Michaels 'SNL' retirement rumors

Weekday update. Former 'Saturday Night Live' star Andy Samberg is weighing in about the rumors that his former boss, Lorne Michaels, 80, may retire. 'He's going to do it when he decides to do it, and we're all just sort of like – no one wants him to [retire],' Samberg, 46, exclusively told The Post while promoting his Comedy Central show 'Digman!' (airing Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m.). 7 Andy Samberg and Lorne Michaels at the premiere of 'Hot Rod' at the Chinese Theater on July 26, 2007 in Los Angeles, California. 'And then, the show either will end or he'll ask someone else.' When asked if he would want the job, Samberg said, 'No. I could never do that. That job is very specific. But I loved working there, and I loved going back.' The actor returned for the show's 50th anniversary special, 'SNL50,' which aired in February. Other names such as Tina Fey have been suggested as Michael's replacement. In September, 'Weekend Update' hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che told Howard Stern: 'Could you imagine having to do that? I don't know that any – I don't know how – you do that job and not be Lorne.' Che quipped: 'To me, it's like, imagine being the stepfather of a 50-year-old! It's just impossible.' 7 Bowen Yang and Andy Samberg in the 'Andy's Song' sketch on Sunday, February 16, 2025. 'Weren't you telling me you thought A.I. should do it?' he asked Samberg. The actor replied: 'I don't remember saying that – but now that you've brought it up, it is a really good idea.' Samberg was on 'SNL' from 2005 to 2012, and became popular for his iconic 'Digital Short' sketches such as 'Dick in a Box' with Justin Timberlake, and 'Lazy Sunday,' his rap about his quest to see the 'Chronicles of Narnia' movies. His career after 'SNL' has been successful, with cult hit movies such as 2016's comedy 'Popstar: Never Stop Stopping,' the 2020 sci-fi rom com 'Palm Springs' with Cristin Milioti and his hit police sitcom 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' which ran for eight seasons, from 2013 to 2021. 7 Seth Meyers Andy Samberg, Lorne Michaels, and Colin Jost at the New York premiere of 'Staten Island Summer'l on July 21, 2015 in New York City. NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images Michaels created 'SNL' in 1975 and has helmed it ever since – save for a brief departure from 1980 to 1985 – and his comeback Season 11 nearly got the show axed. Although Michaels hasn't announced retirement plans, he told Gayle King on 'CBS Mornings' in 2021 that he thinks he's 'committed to doing the show until its 50th anniversary, which is in three years… I'd like to see that through, and I have a feeling that would be a really good time to leave.' The show is currently airing its landmark 50th season, and he hasn't made a retirement announcement. Michaels told the New York Times in a June 2024 interview, 'I'm going to do it as long as I feel I can do it. But I rely on other people and always have.' 'SNL' vet Dan Aykroyd, 73, meanwhile, told The Post in November: 'That ain't happening No. Lorne is not retiring.' 'He's got the greatest gig in New York City. He has influence and power,' the 'Ghostbusters' star went on. 'And he works in a job that keeps him laughing every day. So why would he want to leave that?'
