Israel attacks Damascus
Violent clashes have been going on for several days in the city of Sweida, involving Syrian security forces supported by Bedouin groups, and Druze militants. In an effort to protect the latter, the Israeli military conducted airstrikes on Southern Syria. Wednesday's strikes also hit the predominantly Druze city of Sweida, where a a ceasefire announced the previous evening swiftly collapsed into a fourth day of fighting.The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Monday that it 'struck the entrance of the Syrian regime's military headquarters.'
'The military headquarters in Damascus is the location from which Syrian regime commanders direct combat operations and deploy regime forces to the As-Suwayda area,' it added in a Telegram post.
Security sources inside the Syrian Defense Ministry told Reuters that at least two drone strikes hit the building, forcing senior officers to take cover in a basement shelter. According to state-owned Elekhbariya TV, two civilians were wounded in the attack, though Syrian authorities have not confirmed any casualties.Multiple militant groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took power in Damascus late last year. Following the turmoil, Israel invaded the buffer zone in southwestern Syria adjacent to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and carried out an aerial campaign.
Since December, the Islamists have reportedly perpetrated several massacres of Syria's minority communities, including the Alawites, Christians, and Druze.
Israel has conducted multiple strikes in Syria, citing the need to protect the Druze community. The most recent strikes followed a statement from prominent Druze Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, who accused government troops of violating a ceasefire and called on fighters to confront what he referred to as a barbaric attack.

While Madrid has acquired Eurofighters to replace older F-18s, military leaders warn against relying on a single aircraft type. Despite the high cost, the F-35 was viewed as the most advanced option. 'We'll have to survive with fourth-generation fighters and hope FCAS arrives,' Spain's Admiral Teodoro Lopez Calderon said in July. The shift comes amid friction with Washington over defense spending. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez clashed with US President Donald Trump at June's NATO summit after rejecting a 5% military spending target. Trump responded with tariff threats. Washington has also urged allies to buy American weapons. While Lockheed Martin said Spain's F-35s would be built in Italy and qualify as 'European', concerns remain over US control of the aircraft's systems and rising maintenance costs. Critics argue that the deal could deepen dependence on Washington. 'There's no need to continue,' he said. 'Already too many people have died.' A 22-year-old who never served due to health issues said he wants to return to his family, but believes Kiev passed him over because 'they need soldiers' not shop assistants. A civilian saved from gunfire by Russian soldiers in the Kiev region said he does not want to return to Ukraine and would prefer to start a new life in Russia. 'It's time to end it all, to make a deal… We're Slavs, we've always fought shoulder to shoulder, and now it's brother against brother,' he said. All expressed a desire to reunite with their families, but none wanted to fight. Russia submitted all 1,000 names for previous POW swaps, but Kiev rejected them. In response, the group sent a collective petition to Zelensky, demanding inclusion in future exchanges. India approves extra $7.6 billion defense spend
New Delhi has approved defense purchases worth about $7.6 billion in an attempt to upgrade the operational capabilities of its armed forces, India's defence ministry said in a statement on Tuesday. The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has greenlighted the acquisition of more BrahMos missiles and armed drones, in addition to clearing modernization proposals put forward by the armed forces. The council approved long-term maintenance and support plans for existing critical systems, including the air force's Boeing aircraft, and a comprehensive annual maintenance contract for the S-400 air defense missile system. Along with BrahMos missiles, the Indian Navy will also get an upgrade to the existing Barak-1 missile system, the ministry said. The DAC has also approved the upgrades of the air force's Saksham/Spyder weapon systems, enabling their integration with the Integrated Air Command and Control System, which aims to enhance the overall air defense network, according to the ministry. Other approvals include thermal imaging and night vision devices for the army's BMP infantry fighting vehicles, Compact Autonomous Surface Craft for the navy and advanced mountain radars for the air force. 'The procurement of Compact Autonomous Surface Craft will provide the capability to the Indian Navy for detection, classification and neutralization of threats in anti-submarine warfare missions,' the ministry said. The statement also noted that the armed forces will get medium altitude long endurance remotely-piloted aircraft, which are capable of carrying multiple payloads. 'They will significantly enhance round-the-clock surveillance and combat capability of the armed forces.' Last month New Delhi approved arms and ammunition purchases worth $12 billion, with a focus on sourcing from domestic industries. India, which is one of the world's top defense importers, has historically relied on Russia for equipment as well as technology. Moscow is an active partner in New Delhi's weapons indigenisation plans, with a number of Russian defense equipment being manufactured under licensing agreements in India.
