‘Shoved into buses and sent to Bengal': Mahua Moitra slams Chhattisgarh Police for treatment of migrant workers
The leaders' statements came a day ahead of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's rally in Kolkata in protest against the detention and harassment of migrant labourers from Bengal in other states.
'The nine workers who have been detained by Chhattisgarh police have now been set free. Now they have been forced into service, to be sent back to Bengal. This is completely illegal,' said Moitra in a video message shared through her X handle.
'I urge the Chhattisgarh DGP. Are you aware of what your police are doing? They put them in illegal detention. We have no idea where they are. Now you have released them, and you are shoving them into buses to put them into Bengal. They are not criminals; they have every right to be in any state they choose. You have no right to throw them out of the territory of Chhattisgarh. I hope you realise this. If you don't, I am going to take you to court,' added Moitra.
On Monday evening, Moitra highlighted the plight of the nine migrant workers from her Krishnanagar constituency allegedly detained in Chhattisgarh.
On Tuesday, Samirul Islam highlighted that members of the Matua community have been detained in Pune, Maharashtra.
'Now members of our beloved Matua community have been facing harassment by the anti-Bengali BJP government in Maharashtra. Hatred in politics spares no one.BJP leaders are trying to malign Bengali-speaking migrant workers by branding them as Rohingyas. Recently, our office at the West Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board received information about police harassment of at least six members of the Matua community from North 24 Parganas, currently residing in Pune, Maharashtra.' Islam said on X.
'We have already reached out to the affected family, who confirmed that the police in BJP-ruled Maharashtra have detained Arush Adhikary and at least five others, including minors, on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. Shockingly, BJP MP and Union Minister of State Santanu Thakur himself belongs to the Matua community.'
'We have also learned that the Pune police are reportedly refusing to recognise identity cards issued by the All India Matua Mahasangha (AIMM), besides EPIC and Aadhar cards…' Islam wrote.
The incident comes close on the heels of similar detentions of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh
Last month, seven migrant workers detained in Mumbai were forcibly pushed into Bangladesh, but they were later repatriated.

3 kanwariyas from Ghaziabad killed after speeding ambulance rams into them
Three kanwariyas were killed and at least three others injured late Saturday night after a speeding ambulance rammed into a group of pilgrims on scooters and bikes on the Delhi-Meerut road near Kadarabad village in Ghaziabad, police said. The ambulance, reportedly travelling at over 100 kmph, belonged to Jeevan Hospital in Modinagar — owned by Devendra Shivcharan, husband of BJP Modinagar MLA Dr Manju Siwach. Officials from Jeevan Hospital and MLA Manju Siwach's office could not be reached for comment. The Kanwar Yatra, which sees lakhs of devotees travel on foot or two-wheelers to Haridwar to collect holy Ganga water, often leads to heavy movement on highways. Police officers said they were ascertaining if the speeding ambulance was carrying any patients. According to the police, the Kanwariyas were on their way to Haridwar when the accident took place around midnight. The force of the collision was such that the pilgrims were flung into the air and landed several metres away on the road. The deceased have been identified as Hrithik (23), resident of Krishna Nagar in Ghaziabad; Abhinav Samaniya (25), resident of Kavi Nagar in Ghaziabad; and Sachin alias Johnny (23), resident of Tila Mod Police Station area, Ghaziabad. One of the injured, Ajay, a resident of Harsh Vihar, Mandoli, remains in critical condition. The police have not named the others who sustained injuries. Police said the ambulance was headed towards Meerut at high speed when it collided head-on with the two-wheelers. Locals alerted the authorities immediately after the crash, following which police rushed the injured to Modinagar's Jeevan Hospital and Meerut's Subharti Hospital. While some kanwariyas staged a protest late at night, police managed to disperse the crowd and pacify the situation. Officials said the vehicle has been seized, and further investigation is underway.

STFs created to identify infiltration since 2014, minimal illegal immigration reported so far in Tripura: CM Manik Saha
As Special Task Forces (STF) are being established across Tripura to detect, identify, and deport illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingya people, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also serves as the home minister, said Sunday that some people are attempting to create confusion regarding this initiative. He stated that the purpose of these STFs is to investigate whether there has been any infiltration since 2014 or if there have been any recent cases of illegal immigration. Speaking to reporters after attending an event at Agartala, CM Saha said, 'The Government of India will recognise those who came to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, etc, before December 2014 due to religious persecution, those who come after that will not be. Many people try to spread confusion over this. That is why the Tripura government and Police have formed task forces to find out if there is any such illegal infiltration or anyone who came after 2014, or if there are any recent cases of infiltration.' His comments come shortly after a similar statement Saturday, where he announced that while an STF was formed at West Tripura district on July 15, identical task forces are being formed across all eight districts of the state to detect, identify and deport illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingya people. CM Saha said that STFs are being established to combat illegal immigration along the 856 km-long Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura. He also reassured the public that only a minimal number of illegal immigrants have entered Tripura so far. The state government's action follows a demand from Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the leader of the ruling alliance partner TIPRA Motha, for strict measures against illegal immigrants. He has travelled to New Delhi, where he will lead a delegation of ministers, MLAs, and members of the Tripura Autonomous District Council (ADC) to meet with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on July 23. In a post on X, he said, 'My only answer to all those who continue to criticise us – at least we are trying to protect our next generation and looking beyond party politics. This is not just a fight of the TIPRA Motha Party, but every Indian. Please rise above party politics and unite against illegal migration.' The Election Commission invitation came just days after Pradyot Kishore demanded the introduction of a Bihar-style Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Tripura and the entire Northeast. He alleged that in many areas, people were given Aadhaar cards illegally, taking advantage of corruption among government officials. Senior TIPRA Motha leader and Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, who is also supposed to be a part of the delegation to meet the ECI, confirmed that the delegation comprising nine members headed by party founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma will meet the ECI next week. TIPRA Motha legislator Ranjit Debbarma said that though the BJP-ruled states like Assam and Gujarat had adopted strong steps against illegal immigrants, the Tripura government is yet to take a step on the issue.

Organised crime is Haryana's biggest industry, claims Congress MP Randeep Surjewala
Congress Rajya Sabha member Randeep Singh Surjewala on Sunday (July 20, 2025) termed Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who also holds the Home portfolio, a 'complete failure' and demanded that he step down, alleging that 'organised crime is the biggest industry in the State today'. Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh on the prevailing law-and-order situation, Mr. Surjewala alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had turned Haryana, the land of the Bhagavad Gita, into the land of 'Gangs of Wasseypur', claiming that the State was ruled by 'mafias, guns, bullets and ransom' rather than by the Constitution. Asserting that crime cannot flourish without political patronage, Mr. Surjewala said the police functioned at the behest of the political leadership. Those in power, he alleged, were either 'weak', 'worthless' and 'incompetent' to govern or were offering shelter to criminal elements. 'In both cases, they should quit,' he said. Citing official figures, the former Haryana Minister claimed the deteriorating law-and-order situation was reflected not just in newspaper headlines but in official statistics. 'As per the National Crime Records Bureau, three people are murdered and five sexual offences are committed in Haryana daily. In 2024, 966 people were murdered and 16,743 crimes were committed against women, which means 46 women fell victim to these crimes every day. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 4,137 people have gone missing, most cases being related to kidnapping,' he said. Mr. Surjewala further said that during a meeting of seven Directors General of Police in February this year, the State government admitted that 80 criminal gangs — including the Lawrence, Bhau, Kaushal Chaudhary, Goldy Brar, Rana and Vikas Gulia (Dubai) gangs — were active in Haryana. Blaming part of the situation on unemployment, Mr. Surjewala claimed that police officials had stated that these gangs, operating from India and countries such as Dubai, Canada, and Australia, were recruiting unemployed youth by offering amounts ranging between ₹5,000 and ₹20,000. Mr. Surjewala, who is also the All India Congress Committee general secretary, said a report compiled by him based on press reports from nine districts indicated a 'dangerous trend'. According to him, Faridabad had recorded 41 murders so far this year, followed by 38 each in Jind and Gurugram, 25 in Panipat, 21 in Kaithal, 20 in Karnal, 18 in Kurukshetra, 15 in Yamunanagar and 11 in Sirsa. 'It was a similar situation during the Indian National Lok Dal's rule in 2005, and has now even worsened,' he said. Comparing the situation with the previous Congress government, Mr. Surjewala said that prior to 2014, headlines were about sporting achievements, rising investments in the National Capital Region and Haryana's performance in development indices. 'After the BJP formed the government under Manohar Lal, the headlines changed to reports about paper leaks, corruption in jobs and atrocities on farmers. Under Nayab Saini, we are now reading about drug and sand mafias, an unbridled bureaucracy, and criminal extortion,' he alleged. Reacting to the allegations, Haryana BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli said the police had taken strict action against criminals and the process of arrests had been expedited. He added that action would soon be taken against those issuing threats from abroad.
