Two pedestrians walking on tracks dead after being struck by MARC train in Western Md.
(This story has been updated with new information and to correct the destination of Train 875.)
A Maryland Transit Administration official confirmed late May 6 that two people walking on train tracks in southern Washington County were struck by a MARC train and died.
"We are saddened by this tragic incident and remind the public that it is never safe to walk on or alongside railroad tracks," Maryland Transit spokesperson Veronica Battisti said in an email to The Herald-Mail. "We express our condolences to the victims and their families."
About 100 passengers on MARC Train 875 were transferred to another train to complete their trip, Battisti said.
Train 875 was heading west from Washington, D.C., to Martinsburg, West Virginia, around 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, when the train struck the two people walking on the tracks, Battisti said.
The incident occurred on train tracks in the Sandy Hook area, east of the Harpers Ferry station, she said.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Earlier in the evening, CSX spokesperson Bryan Tucker, via email, confirmed an incident involving a MARC train on CSX tracks in southern Washington County. He referred further questions about the incident to the Maryland Department of Transportation.
Tucker said a CSX special agent responded, as well as Washington County first responders.
Transit posted messages on X, formerly known as Twitter, about police activity delaying a MARC train on the Brunswick line east of the Harpers Ferry station.
CSX has tracks along Sandy Hook Road in southern Washington County that cross the Potomac River to Harpers Ferry.
The Transit Authority posted after 6 p.m. on May 6 about the MARC Brunswick Train 875 being stopped east of Harpers Ferry station due to police activity and the train later being terminated with passengers to take Train 879.
Train 875, according to the online MARC schedule, departs Union Station in Washington, D.C., shortly before 4:30 p.m., to head to Martinsburg.
Battisti said May 7 that MARC Train Brunswick Line service was operating on a regular schedule that morning.
Track 2 reopened around 9 p.m. May 6 with speed restrictions and all tracks were open at 10 p.m. May 6, Battisti said.
CSX spokesperson Austin Staton said the route is used for freight and Amtrak as well as for MARC.
Staton stressed that "this incident must serve as a reminder of the very real dangers of trespassing on railroad property and why it is important for the public to stay away from active railroad tracks and rail yards."
More information about railroad safety can be found at Operation Lifesaver, a nationally recognized leader of rail safety education, according to Staton.
A spokesperson for the Washington County Sheriff's Office referred questions about the incident to CSX on the evening of May 6.

U.S. Senator presses CSX to increase rail safety after 2 recent train derailments in Georgia
U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff is urging action from rail company CSX after two trains derailed in Georgia in less than two months. Ossoff announced the launch of an inquiry into CSX Transportation, requesting answers from company CEO Joseph Hinrichs after train cars went off track in March and May. The two derailments mentioned by Ossoff for his safety inquiry happened on March 25, when six CSX train cars derailed in Fayette County, and on May 9 in Smyrna, when 17 train cars derailed in a residential area. The March 25 derailment in Fayette County was preceded by a warning to the rail company by law enforcement hours before 'that they had found broken tracks at the intersection where the derailment later occurred.' The senator wants CSX to provide information on new solutions to prevent future derailments and is pushing for answers on what they're doing to make that happen. Ossoff said the derailments and 'significant operation failures could have seriously injured or killed my constituents,' saying the company has to do more to prevent serious incidents in the future. In his letter to Hinrichs, Ossoff requested answers within two weeks related to the nature of the failures, prevention and if hazardous materials are ever on the routes where the derailments happened, among others. Terrorist moved to NHS unit with board games and film nights
A teenage terrorist who has stabbed 10 prison officers while in custody has been transferred to an NHS mental health unit that offers sports, games and film nights. Nathan Ruth, 18, has been held at Feltham Young Offenders Institute, in west London, since he was jailed for seven years last year after being convicted of plotting an attack at the Isle of Wight Festival. The then 15-year-old had researched weapons, vehicles and stab vests. Prison sources at Feltham have warned that staff at Ruth's new NHS mental health unit are not safe from the Muslim convert extremist, who tried to slice one guard's ear off and stabbed another with a makeshift weapon known as a shank. An intelligence report on Ruth, leaked to the Daily Mail, revealed that he has a history of improvising weapons and attacking staff and intends to kill a prison officer. Between his arrest in July 2022 and sentencing last April, Ruth, who was caught following a tip-off from the FBI, had already attacked prison personnel on 18 occasions. However, he will now be able to take advantage of sports facilities, quizzes, arts and crafts and film nights after being moved to Bluebird House, a secure mental health facility in Hampshire. The centre's website states that staff provide 'a friendly, welcoming and therapeutic environment for our young people'. The unit's three wards care for up to 20 young people and include a relaxation room, sports hall, games room, fitness suite and all-weather sports area. Patients are provided with their own 'homely and comfortable' bedroom with an en-suite. Its website said: 'During evenings and weekends, we plan activities such as sports, board games, quizzes, arts and crafts and film nights.' According to the Mail, guards at Feltham have worn full riot gear when they deliver food to Ruth or allow him out to shower or exercise. Prison officers said they were shocked at his move. 'He has stabbed so many officers while in Feltham, and openly boasts to staff that we will see him on the news one day,' a source told the Mail. 'We can't believe they have let him go. He has 100 per cent manipulated the system to get himself sent somewhere more comfortable. What really annoys staff is that he has received no further prison time for all the stabbings against staff. 'They just want to focus on his rehabilitation. Well, tell that to the officer who nearly lost an ear. He is a stone-cold psychopath, the scariest I have ever seen. He will not stop until he has killed someone. Staff at that place do not know what they are letting themselves in for.' A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: 'Prisoners can be transferred for treatment in mental health hospitals, based on assessments by expert clinicians, but will return to prison once they are fit to do so. We do not tolerate violence against our hard-working staff and will always push for the strongest possible punishments for those who break the rules.'
