Max, 13, designs new home kit for Mansfield Town

BBC News5 days ago
Mansfield Town is set to adopt a new home kit for next season which has been designed by a 13-year-old fan.The Stags held a competition to design a new home shirt, which was won by season ticket holder, Max, 13.Max said he saw the competition while staying with his grandmother last summer and had "completely forgotten I entered".His design combines Mansfield's traditional amber yellow with blue striped detail and Max said seeing the team wearing it was "crazy".
He said: "There was one day when both my parents were working and I went to my grandma's house and we are both big fans of the Stags."We decided to enter the competition and I put a lot of thought into it and combined a few ideas I had in my head."Then just days ago I got a random call from my grandmother and I said 'Why are you calling me?'"And she said 'Remember than competition to design the Stags shirt? Well you've won'."Max and his grandmother are both season ticket holders at Field Mill, but as the full season has not yet started, he has not yet seen players wearing the shirt during a competitive match. He said: "I saw the pictures and it's a bit crazy because there is the shirt I designed."I've never been great at stuff like that, but I just pulled it together from what was in my head."Max's father Adam said he was "so proud" and "absolutely buzzing".In a video message, Mansfield full-back Aaron Lewis said: "We all love the stripes and think it looks really cool"A spokesman for the club said: "We've seen a superb reaction among our fans to Max's design and are delighted to see his concept finally brought to life."The judging panel - our board of directors - were very impressed with Max's design and it was the fresh and modern style we were looking for."

Rory McIlroy gives honest reaction to dominant Scottie Scheffler victory at The Open

Rory McIlroy could not hide his 'admiration' towards Scottie Scheffler after the American stormed to victory in The Open Championship at Royal Portrush. A fourth major championship of his career, in his unique way, Scheffler has now attracted comparisons with Tiger Woods. And after McIlroy failed to find a spark to mount a late charge on Sunday, finishing in a tie for seventh on -10, Scheffler held his nerve to cruise to a four-shot victory at -17, leaving the Northern Irishman in awe of his rival. 'Admiration,' McIlroy remarked when asked to respond to his Ryder Cup rival's achievement. 'I think all you can do is admire what he does and how he does it. 'I think what he does is one thing, but how he does it is another. He just goes about his business, doesn't do anything overly flamboyant, but he's the best at executing in the game right now. 'Yeah, he's been absolutely amazing over these past two to three years. As I said, all you can do is tip your cap and watch in admiration.' But McIlroy refused to be drawn on the true impact of Scheffler's performance, dismissing the notion that it is either motivating or dispiriting. 'Neither,' remarked the Masters champion. 'All I can do is focus on myself and try to play the best golf that I can. 'I know that, when I do that, I'll have my weeks where I'll contend and hopefully win.' But McIlroy did admit the level set from Scheffler is something to aspire to in the coming months. 'None of us could hang with Scottie this week,' McIlroy concluded. 'He's an incredible player. He's been dominant this week. Honestly, he's been dominant for the last couple years. He is the bar that we're all trying to get to. 'In a historical context, you could argue that there's only maybe two or three players in the history of the game that have been on a run, the one that Scottie's been on here for the last 24 to 36 months. Incredibly impressive. 'Yeah, he's a very worthy winner. Also, he's a great person, and I think he's a wonderful ambassador for our game as well. I'm really happy for him and Meredith and his family.'

Man City in talks to re-sign James Trafford with Ederson's future unclear

James Trafford is ready to return to Manchester City if they can agree a deal with Burnley for the 22-year-old goalkeeper. City have been in discussions with the Lancashire club about a £40million buy-back clause which was inserted when Trafford left the Etihad Stadium in 2023. The clubs have yet to reach an agreement. Trafford joined City aged 12 and spent eight years there before joining Burnley for £19million. He kept 29 clean sheets and conceded only 16 goals in the Championship last season as Scott Parker's side won promotion to the Premier League and was also called into Thomas Tuchel's England squad, having been the goalkeeper for the victorious under-21 team at the European Championship in 2023. Newcastle United have been interested in signing the goalkeeper for the past year and had a bid of about £27million, including add-ons, rejected in June. City have been looking for a goalkeeper as Ederson, who is 32 next month, has a year left on his contract and could potentially leave, having been linked with Galatasaray. The Brazilian was close to leaving last summer amid interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, including Al-Nassr. Pep Guardiola, the City manager, later said the club never received an acceptable offer. Last month Ederson said he would commit to staying at City, having won six Premier League titles since joining the club in 2017. 'My head is here,' he said when asked about his future. 'It stays with City. It gives me everything to go back to the Premier League again and try to win the Champions League as well. My mind is staying in the club.' Ederson was one of three goalkeepers in Guardiola's squad at the Club World Cup this summer, along with Stefan Ortega and Marcus Bettinelli. Ortega will be 33 in November and has a year left on his deal. Bettinelli, 33, signed a one-year deal when he moved from Chelsea this summer.
