Renewed push by activists to provide rail link between Mysuru and Goa

A renewed push is being made by rail activists and citizens' groups to extend the Yeshwantpur–Murudeshwar Express (Train No. 16585/586) via Mysuru to Vasco Da Gama in Goa, which is a long-pending demand of the stakeholders in the region.
The extension, it is argued, would directly connect two of India's most iconic tourist destinations — the heritage city of Mysuru and the beach capital Goa by rail, a vital link which is currently missing.
Yogendra of Mysuru, who strongly advocates for the ramping up of rail network to boost public transportation, said the proposed extension would require an additional coverage of about 210 km from Murudeshwar.
It has been argued that not only will it be a cost-effective solution as it obviates the need for introducing a new rake altogether, but will also bridge a gap in the Karnataka railway network as Mysuru and the hinterland can be connected to Karwar in Uttara Kannada district.
Incidentally, Mysuru's direct link to Uttara Kannada was severed after the cancellation of the overnight Karwar–Bengaluru express via Mysuru.
What has peeved the rail activists is that despite several proposals submitted by Members of Parliament and Members of the Legislative Assembly, and favourable responses from both South Western Railway and Konkan Railway, the Railway Board is yet to issue a final notification.
MP for Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar had met Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in November 2024 and apprised him of the demands of the local stakeholders. Mr. Yaduveer had pointed out that the proposal was agreed to, in the Inter Railway Time Table Coordination (IRTTC) meeting held in Jaipur in April 2024.
Gautam Shetty, an activist from Kundapura, said that the extension of Train No. 16585 upto Vasco Da Gama will establish direct connections between not just Mysuru and Goa, but will also connect various hinterlands of Karnataka like Ramanagara, Hassan, Subramanya, etc., with the tourist destination of Goa.
Incidentally, information sought by Mr. Shetty under the Right to Information (RTI) Act indicated that there is a proposal to extend the train to Vasco Da Gama, and the concerned zonal railways have given their consent for it. But the RTI reply dated July 10, 2025, states that approval is awaited from the Railway Board.
This delay for final notification has irked the activists who argue that this is not just about a train, but about connecting two iconic tourist destinations.
Stakeholders in the tourism sector point out that travellers visiting Mysuru can explore the possibility of continuing their journey to the coastal region, savouring its scenic beauty before moving on to Goa.
Incidentally, Mysuru was connected to Goa by air for a few years and the flights used to have over 90% occupancy rate, underscoring the passenger potential.
Besides tourism, the extension would improve access for students, workers, and small traders in districts like Mandya, Ramanagara, Mysuru, and Uttara Kannada. It would also enhance rail accessibility for Gokarna, Kumta, Honnavar, and Canacona — all important stops along the coastal route, argue the activists in support of their demands.

Thirumavalavan, on Wednesday, said the DMK government should ignore the opposition of the caste outfits in the issue of enacting a separate law against honour-based crimes and pave way for a 'democratic revolution'. Mr Thirumavalavan met with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with CPI and CPI (M) state secretaries, R. Mutharasan and P. Shanmugam, on Wednesday. On the other hand, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee observed a day's fast led by its SC wing leader, M.P. Ranjan Kumar, inside the Sathyamurthy Bhavan. Mr. Thirumavalavan pointed out the Hindu Marriage (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1967, which legalised self-respect marriages, and the implementation of Mandal Commission's recommendations, providing 27% to backward classes in government jobs and in education, also faced stiff opposition from upper castes and dominant castes. 'These were accepted by the larger society over time. The separate law is not a law in favour of scheduled castes. Honour-based crimes are national phenomena – such crimes are happening across communities and States and even within SCs and OBCs. Even recently, an OBC boy attacked another OBC boy for speaking to a girl from his own caste. It is a law against regressiveness and backwardness. CM Stalin should ignore the opposition of caste outfits as the democratic forces within these communities would welcome it,' he told The Hindu. He explained to Mr Stalin about the need for a separate law to tackle such crimes and give it a special focus just as we have separate laws for crimes against women, Scheduled Castes and so on. 'We have given him several references that reiterate why such a law is needed as recommended by National Commission of Women, Law Commission of India, Supreme Court's directives in Shakti Vahini vs Union Of India case and bills introduced as private member bills in Parliament and also a Bill introduced by CPI-M MLA A. Soundarrajan in 2015 in Tamil Nadu Assembly. Even Rajasthan has introduced a separate law against it. We take pride in calling Tamil Nadu a land of social justice and we talk about Dravidian model. He listened to us patiently. He didn't give us any assurance but we hope CM Stalin would enact a separate law. It is needed today,' he said.

Bhopal: Driving licences in Madhya Pradesh will now be dispatched directly to the homes of applicants, transport minister Udai Pratap Singh told the state assembly on Wednesday. Responding to a debate on the MP Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Act, Singh said the transport dept was focused not just on tax collection but also on improving public services. "Most jobs done at RTOs have an online facility now thereby saving people from making rounds of RTO and only when a photo of a person has to be clicked, he has to go to the RTO office," the minister said. "Be it applying for a licence or a permit or paying a penalty, everything can be done online and the department now proposes to dispatch smart licence cards to the home address of the applicants," he said. Earlier, BJP MLA Vhgwandas Sabnani requested the minister to give smart card-like licences to people so that it was easily preserved and also send the licences to the home address of the applicant as the passport offices do.

Assembly passes Jan Vishwas Bill 2.0 to ease minor offence penalties

Bhopal: The state assembly on Wednesday passed the 'Jan Vishwas Bill-02' by voice vote, paving the way for decriminalising minor offences and replacing jail terms with financial penalties under several state laws. The -Madhya Pradesh Jan Vishwas Bill-02 passed by the state assembly by voice vote on Wednesday aims to decriminalise minor offences and rationalise maximum punishment for the same from jail term to penalty. The Bill tabled in the House on Tuesday is in continuation to MP Jan Vishwas Bill-01 passed by the House in 2024 under "ease of living and ease of doing business" policy of the union and the state govts. The Bill proposes to amend 80 sections of 16 laws of different Acts so as to decriminalise certain offences. The laws sought to be amended include sub-clause 3 of section 3 of MP Fisheries Act, 1948, under which fishing by way of use of explosives, chemicals, firearms and such equipment, fishing during the season when it is banned and fishing of the species that is banned, which according to existing law attracts maximum punishment of 1 year of imprisonment will now have penalty of Rs 2 lakh as punishment. The Bill also seeks to amend Section 23 of the MP Agriculture Warehouse Act, 1947, under which violation of Sections 15, 16, 18 of the Act attracted a maximum jail term of 3 years or penalty or both but now the crimes will be compoundable with the concurrence of the court. The competent authority will impose appropriate penalty on the persons found guilty of violating the law, which the alleged offender will be able to challenge before commissioner, food & civil supplies and if not satisfied by his order too, he may go in appeal before the principal secretary, food & civil supplies. The sections in the Act amended relate to operating a warehouse without due permission, which shall attract a penalty of up to Rs 3 lakh according to capacity of the warehouse, non-renewal of the licence which shall have a penalty of Rs 10 thousand, delay in returning the product stored in the warehouse and not getting the product stored in the warehouse insured, which shall attract a maximum penalty of 3 percent of the cost of the product and 5 times the monthly premium of the insurance respectively. The Bill also seeks to amend the sub-clause (5) of section 195 of the MP Municipal Act 1959 and sub-clause (5) of section 208 of M P Municipal Act, 1969, thereby replacing the word 'penalty' by 'late fee'. The Bill also seeks to amend section 35 of the MP Ayurvedic, Unani and Natural Therapy Practitioners Act, 1970, thereby providing for penalty of Rs 50,000 if found practising without due registration and Rs 1 lakh penalty each time subsequently. T he Bill, when it becomes a law, will also amend section 24 of the MP Krishi Upaj Mandi Act, 1972, thereby giving powers to the Mandi secretary to impose a penalty of Rs 5 thousand on a person for violation of section 35 of the Act. He will also be fined Rs 1 thousand daily till he continues violating the law and if he is an employee subordinate to the Mandi secretary, he will be fined by the managing director of the Mandi Board. The Bill also provides for amendment in the Midwifery & Obstetrical Nursing Registration Act. A person found working as a midwife without registration though she has the requisite qualification will attract a penalty of Rs 10,000 and if she continues working without registration, she will be fined at the rate of Rs 500 daily. The Bill also seeks to amend sub-clause 50 of section 19 of the MP Homeopathy Council Act thereby providing Rs 20 thousand penalty and if it's an organisation, Rs 50 thousand, if the person or the organisation has the qualification but not the registration to operate. The MP Medical Council Act, 1989, will also be amended to provide for Rs 1 lakh penalty if a person with requisite qualification is found practicing without registration. Certain clauses of the MP Motor Vehicle Taxation Act, M P Panchayat Raj & Gram Swaraj Act,MP Jan Shiksha Adhiniyam, MP Rural Infrastructure & Road Development Act, MP Fruit Plants Plantation Act , MP Anatomy Act while M P Cotton (Statistics) Act, MP Cotton Control Act, MP India Weighting and Measurement Act and MP Chickenpox Vaccination Act will be abolished when the Bill comes into force as law. MSME state minister Chaitnaya Kashyap while replying to debate over the Bill said that it has been brought to let the traders and entrepreneurs do business in a fearless and stress free atmosphere, which is necessary as a drive is underway to attract investments in the state and it's getting an overwhelming response.
