This New Interstellar Object Could Possibly Be The Oldest Comet Ever Seen

NDTV12-07-2025
A mysterious object, first observed hurtling across the solar system on July 1, has now been identified as "very likely to be the oldest comet ever."
The interstellar object 3I/ATLAS could be around 7 billion years old - 3 billion years older than our solar system, according to the University of Oxford researchers. The hyperbolic course of 3I/ATLAS, compared to other comets that originated in the solar system, proves it is not from our solar vicinity.
Astronomer Matthew Hopkins of the University of Oxford stated that "all non-interstellar comets, such as Halley's comet, formed at the same time as the solar system, so they are up to 4.5 billion years old."
But this potentially "water ice-rich" visitor could be much older, and their statistical approach indicates that "3I/ATLAS is very likely to be the oldest comet we have ever seen" out of those that are now known, per Space.com.
3I/ATLAS was initially observed by the Atlas survey telescope in Chile on July 1 at a distance of roughly 670 million kilometres from the Sun.
It is approximately the distance between Earth and Jupiter and can only be seen at this time with very large telescopes, the BBC reported.
This is the third known visitor from space, after 1I/'Oumuamua in 2017 and the comet 2I/Borisov in 2019. However, 3I/ATLAS appears to have retained a large amount of its volatile material, such as dust and ice, compared to its predecessors, allowing scientists to see its coma and tail more vividly.
The secret behind 3I/ATLAS's advanced age is that it comes from a totally different region of the Milky Way than earlier interstellar visitors.
The object was most likely generated in the Milky Way's "thick disk," an area of old stars that circles both above and below the thin plane where most stars are found, given its extremely steep trajectory.
"This is an object from a part of the galaxy we have never seen up close before," Chris Lintott, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford, said.
Since then, the comet has been floating across interstellar space, with a "two-thirds chance this comet is older than the solar system," he added.

Are Aliens Watching Earth? 20-Km-Long Interstellar Object Sparks Global Buzz

Last Updated: NASA's ATLAS telescope spotted 3I/ATLAS, the third known interstellar object and the largest yet, nearly 20 km long and unusually massive, stirring curiosity among scientists Are we truly alone in the universe, or is someone secretly observing us? This age-old question has resurfaced after space scientists discovered a new interstellar object named 3I/ATLAS. The discovery has sparked excitement and concern in the scientific community. What's even more astonishing is that Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb believes this may not be a natural object at all but potentially a piece of alien technology deliberately sent towards our solar system. This is not just a question of astrophysics; if proven true, it could signal a possible unknown threat to humanity. What Is 3I/ATLAS? Discovered by NASA's ATLAS telescope, 3I/ATLAS is the third known interstellar object to enter our solar system, and it's believed to be the largest ever detected. Measuring nearly 20 kilometres in length, it's an unusually massive body travelling through space. According to Loeb, the object is surrounded by a dense layer of gas and dust, making its structure particularly mysterious. He points out that its trajectory, speed, and composition don't resemble any known natural celestial body. This has led him to suggest that it could be a probe or vessel sent by an advanced alien civilisation, perhaps with a mission we can't yet comprehend. A Divided Scientific Community While Loeb insists the object's unusual behaviour warrants further investigation, many scientists remain sceptical. They argue it could simply be a primordial space rock ejected by the gravitational forces of distant stars. Still, Loeb urges caution. He believes we shouldn't dismiss the alien theory until all available data is studied in detail. When Will It Come Closest? 3I/ATLAS is expected to pass closest to Earth in December, at a distance of approximately 270 million kilometres. During this time, astronomers around the world will closely observe its behaviour to determine its true nature. This isn't the first time Avi Loeb has raised eyebrows with alien claims. He previously suggested that another interstellar object, 1I/'Oumuamua, was also alien technology – though that theory remains unproven. Now, with another unusual body heading our way, some wonder: Are these cosmic visitors part of a larger survey? Surveillance missions? Or the lead-up to first contact? If Loeb's theories hold any truth, the discovery of 3I/ATLAS could either be the greatest scientific revelation in history or the biggest existential threat we've ever faced. For now, scientists and space enthusiasts alike are watching the skies with bated breath—wondering whether we're really alone… or if someone, somewhere far away, is already watching us. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Solar Eclipse on August 2: Will it be visible in India? Full list of cities

On August 2, 2027, a remarkable solar eclipse, dubbed the "Great North African Eclipse," will occur, lasting nearly six minutes. The path of totality will traverse parts of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, bringing total darkness to cities within Morocco, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. While India won't experience totality, a partial eclipse will be visible. A solar eclipse is one of those marvelous phenomena of nature that make us witness moments that can't be seen on usual sunny days. But there's something hauntingly beautiful about a total solar eclipse, especially the one that turns day into night, casting a deep, otherworldly darkness over the land. For a few rare minutes, the world pauses as the Moon completely covers the face of the Sun, silencing birds, cooling the air, and making the sky feel like twilight. The Sun's glowing corona seems to be no less than a faint bright ring, and its outer atmosphere becomes visible, forming a halo of light that's invisible under normal conditions. When does a total solar eclipse happen? When the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, it casts a shadow on the Sun's surface at an angle such that the Sun looks completely covered by the Moon when seen from the Earth. This cosmic dance of the celestial bodies leads to a Total Solar eclipse. When will the eclipse take place? On August 2, 2027, the world will witness one such outstanding event. But this isn't just any eclipse; it's being called the 'Great North African Eclipse', and it's expected to last nearly six minutes, making it one of the longest solar eclipses in modern times. Millions of people will be directly under the Moon's shadow, experiencing total darkness in the middle of the day. For some, this will be their only chance to see such a long-lasting total solar eclipse in their lifetime. What makes this eclipse so extraordinary? This eclipse is special because of it's rare cosmic alignment. The Earth will be at aphelion, or its farthest point from the Sun, making the Sun appear slightly smaller in the sky. At the same time, the Moon will be at perigee, its closest point to Earth, making it appear larger. This combination allows the Moon to block the Sun for a longer period than usual. What cities can witness it? This eclipse will be over parts of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, plunging several cities into total darkness for nearly six minutes. According to this duration makes it the longest solar eclipse visible from land until the year 2114. The path of totality will begin in the Atlantic Ocean, cross through southern Spain and Gibraltar, then move across North Africa, covering countries like Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. From there, it will pass through the Red Sea and enter Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and parts of Somalia. Luxor in Egypt is expected to witness the longest total eclipse duration, over six minutes of complete darkness. Will the eclipse be visible in India? Unfortunately, India won't be in the path of totality. However, a partial eclipse will still be visible across most Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. According to people in India can expect to see the eclipse around 4:30 PM IST, with the partial phase lasting until sunset.

Soil On The Moon Could Potentially Support Life, Study Claims

In groundbreaking new research, Chinese scientists have suggested that the soil on the Moon could potentially support life, thanks to a breakthrough technology that may help humans survive on the Moon. According to a study published in the journal Joule, researchers were able to extract water from lunar soil and use it to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and fuel-related chemicals. This innovation could pave the way for deeper space exploration by reducing dependency on Earth for essential resources like water, oxygen, and fuel. "We never fully imagined the 'magic' that the lunar soil possessed," Lu Wang of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, said. "The biggest surprise for us was the tangible success of this integrated approach. The one-step integration of lunar H2O extraction and photothermal CO2 catalysis could enhance energy utilisation efficiency and decrease the cost and complexity of infrastructure development," Lu Wang added, per In the past, space agencies have floated the idea of using the Moon as an outpost for far-flung explorations of the cosmos. But this might only be possible if experts are able to make the necessary fuel, water and other resources on the Moon itself. The Chinese researchers pointed out that studies have shown that transporting supplies from Earth to any future moon base would be expensive because the greater the mass of cargo, the harder a rocket has to work to launch into space. Citing one of the studies, they determined that it would cost $83,000 to ship a gallon of water to the Moon, and yet each astronaut would be expected to drink 4 gallons of water per day. Previous attempts to extract water from lunar soil used large amounts of energy and didn't break down CO2 for fuel and other essential uses. But now the new system overcomes those problems, scientists said. The team developed a technology that would both extract water from lunar soil and directly use it to convert the CO2 exhaled by astronauts into carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen gas, which could then be used to make fuels and oxygen for the astronauts to breathe. The technology accomplishes this through a novel system that uses light from the Sun and turns it into heat. Researchers said that the technology was a success in the lab. However, they noted that the extreme lunar environment still poses challenges that will complicate its usage on the lunar surface, including drastic temperature fluctuations, intense radiation and low gravity.
