With underwhelming responses to films such as Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Cirkus, there were murmurs questioning his box office hold.
Despite the dip, Ranveer returned in 2023 with
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
, a film that rejuvenated his connection with audiences and critics. He also made a brief but memorable appearance in Singham Again. Yet, in the months that followed, there were no new project announcements, adding to speculation about his career trajectory. To make matters more uncertain, a film he was supposed to do with HanuMan director Prasanth Varma was scrapped. Additionally, long-discussed projects like Don 3 and Baiju Bawra have seen little to no progress, leaving fans curious and concerned.

Madhavan Weighs In on the Notion of a 'Comeback'
As Ranveer gears up to return to the big screen with Dhurandhar, his co-star
R. Madhavan
offered an insightful perspective on the supposed 'comeback' narrative often thrust upon actors. In an interview wirh the Indian Express, Madhavan dismissed the idea that Ranveer was ever out of the race. According to him, a couple of films not performing well doesn't define the career of an actor with immense talent and proven capability. He pointed out that such narratives are often fueled by the media's desire to build drama around success and failure.

'I don't think Ranveer Singh has ever been written off. A couple of 'not so good' films doesn't end an actor's career. He's truly good and an extraordinary actor. But, it makes a good copy in the press and media to keep writing people off and bring them back.'
Drawing a comparison with some of Hollywood's greatest, Madhavan noted that actors like Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks have maintained enduring legacies despite acting in a relatively limited number of films. He emphasized that both he and Ranveer prefer focusing on meaningful scripts over frequent appearances and are unbothered by the superficial pressures of constant output.
Changing Audience Expectations and Slower, Stronger Storytelling
Madhavan also highlighted how the evolving landscape of cinema demands greater attention to character depth and story substance. He acknowledged that today's viewers, more informed and discerning than ever, expect content that reflects their realities and values. Crafting such films, according to him, takes time and cannot be rushed. Thus, actors need to be patient and selective rather than constantly chasing visibility.
He clarified that neither he nor Ranveer operates from a place of insecurity. The idea of fading relevance due to short breaks between films doesn't align with their creative approach. Media may try to write off and resurrect careers for headlines, but both actors are committed to longevity through quality storytelling rather than quantity.
All Eyes on 'Dhurandhar'
Ranveer's upcoming film Dhurandhar marks a significant chapter in his career. With a powerful lineup including R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Arjun Rampal, the film promises a compelling cinematic experience. Backed by Jio Studios and B62 Studios and helmed by Aditya Dhar—who serves as the writer, director, and producer—the film has generated high expectations. Co-produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar, Dhurandhar is set for a theatrical release on December 5, and may very well silence all doubters once again.
