De Bruyne on taking Maradona's retired no.10 shirt at Napoli: ‘I'm my own player'
De Bruyne has been training with Napoli for the last week after sealing a move to the Stadio Maradona on a free transfer after a 10-year spell in the Premier League with Manchester City, during which time he won six league titles, two FA Cups, five league cups and the UEFA Champions League.
The Belgian was officially unveiled in front of the press on Saturday, and sat down for his introductory press conference in the afternoon.
De Bruyne on wearing Maradona's no.10 shirt at Napoli
Reporters at De Bruyne's first Napoli press conference asked about the photographs that circulated earlier in the week, showing the former City star wearing Maradona's retired no.10 in training.
In response, De Bruyne effectively confirmed that he will be wearing the no.10 shirt for the 2024-25 season.
'I would say I was a bit surprised in the beginning, because I knew that the number was retired, but in another way it's an honour. It's an honour from the team and from the club to give me this responsibility,' De Bruyne said.
He went on to explain that a shirt number does not add any more pressure for a player at his level, because 'the pressure comes from itself if you play for a big team like Napoli'.
'I don't think it adds any more pressure,' De Bruyne added. 'I think the pressure comes from itself. If you play for big teams like Napoli, the pressure will be there. There's a team that wants to win, you know what you have to do as a player and a squad, but I don't believe that a number or anything else will add to the pressure.
'Maradona is Maradona, he's one of the legends of the game and he's synonymous with Napoli anyway. I'm grateful, I'm proud, but I'm my own player. I'm going to try and do the job the best I can do and hopefully I can bring pleasure to the team, to the city and to the fans and get some good performances in there.'

Real Madrid retain interest in Premier League defender
There has been a lot of noise surrounding Real Madrid's interest in Ibrahima Konate lately. The Frenchman is currently in the final year of his contract at Liverpool, with multiple reports suggesting that he will join Real Madrid as a free agent next summer. Real Madrid are interested in signing Konate this summer as well, but Liverpool are holding out for a hefty price tag for the French international. However, Konate is not the only Premier League centre-back Real Madrid are keeping an eye on. Real Madrid remain interested in Saliba According to L'Equipe, Real Madrid are also monitoring the progress of William Saliba, who had emerged as the club's top defensive target earlier in the summer. Real Madrid, in fact, were determined to sign Saliba as part of their plans to shore up their defensive unit. However, he ended up becoming too expensive for the club. The Spanish giants, though, are determined to add more defensive firepower, perhaps in the summer of 2026. That is where Saliba might come into the picture once again. The Frenchman is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, having played a key role in Arsenal's success under Mikel Arteta. That said, Saliba may still cost a fortune next summer as the Frenchman has a long-term contract at Arsenal, which doesn't expire until 2027. Therefore, unless Real Madrid are willing to break the bank for Saliba next summer, Ibrahima Konate is likely to remain the club's top defensive target in 2026, providing the Liverpool star doesn't join this summer.

Mixed reports on Calhanoglu replacement as Mourinho wants Inter star
Several sources confirm that José Mourinho's Fenerbahçe are interested in Hakan Calhanoglu, but there are mixed reports on the possible replacements at San Siro, with Italian sports papers mentioning Granit Xhaka and Morten Frendrup as the Nerazzurri's priorities. Mourinho's Fenerbahce have emerged as the latest club interested in Calhanoglu. Gazzetta claims Xhaka is Inter's priority to replace Calhanoglu The Turkey international has a €30m price tag and has already attracted interest from Fenerbahce's domestic rivals, Galatasaray. Inter haven't yet received formal offers for Calhanoglu but are already considering potential replacements, just in case one of the interested clubs matches their demands. According to Gazzetta, Bayer Leverkusen star Xhaka is Cristian Chivu's priority target if Calhanoglu leaves. The Swiss international has also been linked with Juventus and Milan. CorSport: Inter turn to Frendrup if Calhanoglu leaves Gazzetta reports that Xhaka is not the only target in central midfield, but is surely Chivu's favourite. On the other hand, Corriere dello Sport wrote on its Sunday front page that Genoa's Frendrup is the leading Inter target to replace Calhanoglu, should the Turkish star leave. Atalanta's Ederson was also mentioned as one of the players on Inter's agenda earlier this month, but the Brazilian has a €50m price tag, and the Serie A giants are also in talks for his teammate Ademola Lookman.

Dominant Marquez cruises to Czech MotoGP win
Marc Marquez won the Czech MotoGP on Sunday for his eighth victory in 12 races this season and fifth in a row, extending his commanding lead in the world championship. The factory Ducati rider beat Marco Bezzecchi on an Aprilia by almost two seconds, while Pedro Acosta on a KTM came in third in his first race podium finish of the season. Marquez had a fifth straight perfect weekend, winning both the sprint on Saturday and Sunday's race. The 32-year-old Spaniard now leads the world championship with 381 points, 120 ahead of his younger brother Alex who crashed, and 168 ahead of Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia. Bagnaia started from pole on a sunny Sunday at Brno but only retained the lead until the second lap when Bezzecchi eased past him, with Marquez following suit soon afterwards. Acosta did the same to settle down in third after getting a boost from a third-place finish in Saturday's sprint. Marquez glided past Bezzecchi in lap eight as the runaway trio kept building up their lead, and as so often this season kept widening the gap comfortably. The three stayed put until the finish line, although fourth-placed Bagnaia gave Acosta a hard time pressing from behind. Reigning world champion Jorge Martin collected his first points after finishing seventh in the first race he has completed this year. Martin sat out the first three races following two pre-season crashes, and when he returned at Qatar in April, he crashed heavily again during the race and missed the next seven. Alex Marquez retired after crashing in lap two to leave Brno without a point following a disappointing 17th spot in the sprint race. He took out Joan Mir who also walked away from the gravel safety area, just like Enea Bastianini a lap later. The MotoGP circus will now take a summer break and resume with the Austrian GP on August 15-17. frj/mw
