Auburn Formally Retiring QB Cam Newton's No. 2 Jersey During Game vs. Georgia
College Football Auburn Formally Retiring QB Cam Newton's No. 2 Jersey During Game vs. Georgia Published Aug. 18, 2025 2:36 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Auburn will retire 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey this fall, making him the fourth player in program history to receive the honor. The ceremony will take place during Auburn's home game against rival Georgia on Oct. 11. Newton will join Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Terry Beasley (No. 88) as former Tigers football players whose numbers have been formally retired. The jerseys of Sullivan and Beasley were retired following Sullivan's 1971 Heisman Trophy season, and Jackson's number was retired as part of Auburn's football centennial celebration in 1992. No one has worn No. 2 at Auburn since Newton and the Tigers beat Oregon in the Bowl Championship Series national title game for the 2010 season. But soon it will be officially out of service. "Auburn will always be home to me," Newton said in a statement. "The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired ... is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!" One of the most decorated players in Auburn and SEC history, Newton led Auburn to conference and national titles with a perfect 14-0 record. He threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores. He became the first player in SEC history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. ADVERTISEMENT "Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player," Auburn athletic director John Cohen said. "Retiring Cam's jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time." Reporting by The Associated Press. Richard Keys suggests Alexander Isak to Liverpool transfer twist with Real Madrid claim
Swedish striker Alexander Isak remains Liverpool's primary forward target with just two weeks left in this summer's transfer window. The Reds continue to stand ready to move should Newcastle provide any indication of willingness to negotiate. Liverpool submitted a £110 million ($148.9 million) bid earlier this month, which was turned down by its Premier League and Champions League rival. Nevertheless, the Reds remain open to discussions regarding a potential British-record transfer. Newcastle isn't currently prepared to entertain offers, instead concentrating on bringing in not one but two new forwards. Here, we examine the latest Isak developments and speculation as this standoff persists. READ MORE: Darwin Nunez shows his true colors after Liverpool transfer exit to Saudi Arabia READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Alexander Isak deadline, Ibrahima Konate talks, Marc Guehi latest 'Second offer' Former Sky Sports host Richard Keys suggests Liverpool has a secondary proposal for Isak alongside the bid submitted earlier this month. "Newcastle have had two really good offers," he states in his recent blog entry. "Liverpool are prepared to pay £110 million now. Their back-up bid is £80 million now and £60 million more next summer. I'm of the view the only thing Newcastle have to decide is which one to take." These observations echo statements made during beIN Sport's commentary of Liverpool versus Bournemouth. Keys, though, doesn't repeat the on-air assertion that Real Madrid could be involved. "I heard today that Liverpool have made a bid of £110m. A second offer of £80m now and £60m next season. Take your pick," Keys said during the broadcast on Friday. He added: "But I've also heard that Real Madrid might be in the frame." Big discount Stefan Borson, the former financial adviser at Manchester City, has suggested that Liverpool could secure a £15 million ($20.3 million) discount on its potential signing of Isak this summer. He reckons that a deal could be struck for around £125 million ($169.3 million) "plus a load of add-ons, some easy and some not easy" following the clubs' clash at St. James' Park. Speaking to Football Insider, Borson said: "I think if we'd have looked at it at the start of the summer, you'd have said Liverpool will have to pay close to £150 million. If he does end up going now, I think they have successfully chipped off £10-15 million of his fee." Howe responds to claim Newcastle's head coach Eddie Howe has effectively brushed aside claims that Isak had expressed a desire to leave the club back in May. Rumors that Isak had made his intentions clear internally before the season concluded are making the rounds in the national press. Howe has commented on those claims. "Trust me, when that final whistle went (on the final day), that (Isak leaving) was the furthest thing from my mind," he told Chronicle Live before later adding: "I was not thinking of any individual in that moment, so I can't really give an answer on that (fears Isak would leave this summer)."

Denny Hamlin Shares that Kyle Busch Door-Slammed Him at Richmond, Hit ‘Everything'
Richard Childress Racing had an eventful Cook Out 400, with Austin Dillon winning the race and Kyle Busch causing the big one. Not only did Busch's car take out Chase Briscoe and Chase Elliott, but he also apparently got into Denny Hamlin. In the 'Actions Detrimental' episode recapping the Cook Out 400, Hamlin shared that Busch door-slammed him during one of the cautions when the No. 8 was warming up his tires. Hamlin knows all of the hits are unintentional, but he wondered what's going on with Busch. 'I was going to text him (Kyle Busch) and say, 'Are you ok?'. It was so weird. We were under caution and I felt, BOOM, I'm like 'What the hell?'. I guess he was warming his tires up and he just door-slammed the s*** out of me. He's hitting everything…He just wiped out a few cars and then the 9 was coming by and he clipped him on the way out.' The No. 8 car then drove into the No. 19 to get past it. As the multi-car wreck unfolded behind him, Busch came down and unintentionally hooked Chase Elliott, causing the No. 9 car to have a head-on collision with the outside wall. It was Elliott's first DNF of the season. 'Obviously, I saw them crashing and we were all just stacking up trying to get stopped and then after the wreck was over, I thought we were done wrecking and was just trying to squeak by. Guess somebody didn't know I was down there. Kyle just didn't know I was to the left.' He also had an issue on pit road, getting into an awkward spot in his pit box that forced him to back up to exit. Busch is now on the verge of going two consecutive regular seasons without a victory, with his last Cup Series win happening on June 4, 2023. He's also faring poorly in the NASCAR standings this season, dropping even further back as of late with a 20.75 average finishing position in the last four races. Read More: On the verge of missing the playoffs for the second consecutive year, Busch's frustrations with the Next Gen car and his winless streak seem to be taking a bit of a toll.
