Heroin seizures spike in Ernakulam, raising alarm for enforcement agencies
In the most recent case, police arrested four individuals following a raid in Perumbavoor, which led to the seizure of 126 grams of heroin. The contraband was concealed in ten soap boxes, each containing over 10 grams, with a total estimated market value of around Rs 70,000. Earlier, two migrant workers were apprehended in Kalady for possessing 25 grams of heroin, also hidden in soap boxes.
'In the majority of heroin seizure cases, the arrested individuals are from Assam. Our investigation reveals that the drugs are being trafficked through the Bangladesh and Myanmar borders. In the Perumbavoor case, the heroin was sourced from the Nagaland–Myanmar border.
There has been a clear spike in such cases in recent months,' said a senior officer with the Ernakulam Rural Police. Excise officials have also noted a surge in heroin trafficking in recent weeks. Excise deputy commissioner T M Maju said his department has detected multiple instances of illegal heroin possession in the district.
'We are now seeing more heroin-related cases. Like ganja, heroin is gaining popularity, especially among migrant workers. There is a high demand among these groups,' Maju said.

In a surprise crackdown, the Kasturinagar RTO (regional transport office) hauled away 21 private cars that were attached to Zoomcar, a self-drive car rental app. Transport officials maintained that these cars, some of them high-end SUVs, were being run commercially without valid permits. Regional transport officer (East) GP Krishnananda said his enforcement team of six carried out the drive across the city after repeated warnings were ignored. This was the first major crackdown by the department against white-board vehicles being run as rental cars in the last two years. Earlier, the Karnataka Transport Authority had pointed out that Zoomcar held a rent-a-motorcab licence, which expired in Jan last year. The allegation against the company is that it was hiring white-board vehicles in violation of motor vehicle rules. The Times of India tried reaching out to Zoomcar for comments, but in vain. In fact, Krishnananda and team carried out a special operation to identify such white-board cars by posing as customers. It all began Wednesday when officials approached the owners as regular customers and booked vehicles, claiming they were heading out on trips with friends. When the owners tracked the GPS and noticed their vehicles were at an unusual location, they called to find out what was happening. That's when officials dropped the bomb — the cars had been seized. Krishnananda told TOI: "Zoomcar still hasn't renewed its aggregator licence. Private vehicles cannot be used commercially — it's a clear loss to the govt and totally illegal. Of the 25 cars seized, most belonged to software engineers, some were from other states including BH-series, and one was even owned by a defence employee. Each vehicle now faces a fine of Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000, while out-of-state cars must also pay Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh as lifetime tax. The vehicles will be released only after fines are cleared and the owners give an undertaking not to reattach them." The owners have been booked under Section 200 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Among the car models seized were Baleno, Glanza, Safari, Dzire, Kia, Tata, and Hyundai. Private cars only for personal use During the seizures, officials faced resistance from vehicle owners. The RTO stressed that anyone wanting to run a transport business must register their vehicle with a yellow board; only then can it be rented out legally. Officials confirmed that stringent measures would continue against such violations to curb the misuse of private registration for commercial purposes. "This is our second such drive: about six months ago, we issued notice after finding 15 vehicles, but despite warnings, people continued these activities," Krishnananda said.

Used stolen mobile phone, hopped cities: How man who stole gold worth Rs 13 lakh from associate evaded arrest for over a month
Prabh Singh (30), a jewellery trader, switched on a stolen mobile phone only when staying in a hotel as he moved across cities to avoid getting arrested. He would then use the hotel WiFi, and contact his family on Snapchat. For more than a month, he tried everything possible to cover his tracks and remain under the radar after he allegedly drugged his associate Pradeep Kumar (40) in Delhi's Paharganj on July 8 and stole over 1 kg of gold ornaments, worth nearly Rs 13 lakh, from him, and even the phone that he kept using. After nearly one month of trying to not get caught, his luck ran short on August 17 when he was nabbed from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, the Delhi Police said. Police had chased him in Delhi, Amritsar, and Jammu before he was finally apprehended. After the July 8 incident, the police first headed to Amritsar as both the accused and the complainant hail from the city. 'The team traced his family in Amritsar and conducted field raids. However, the accused could not be located. Further technical analysis then indicated his presence in a hotel in Jammu. A team was immediately dispatched, but by the time police reached, the accused had fled again,' DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan said. Over the course of a month-and-a-half, the accused was changing hotels, and while using the stolen phone of Pradeep Kumar to contact his family on Snapchat, the police said. Whenever the police would zero in on a hotel, Singh would change cities again, the officer said. On August 17, Singh was tracked in Aurangabad and arrested following a quick raid. 'During questioning, the accused admitted to committing the crime and disclosed that he was under financial distress and greed prompted him to plan the theft,' DCP Valsan said. A police officer said that Singh allegedly accompanied Pradeep Kumar to the Capital after the latter mentioned a 'lucrative deal' he had struck with a Delhi client. Kumar told Singh that he had to carry the consignment to Delhi for the client, police said. Upon reaching Delhi, the duo checked in in a Paharganj hotel on the night of July 8. Singh spiked Kumar's dal curry with sleeping pills, the police said. 'Once the complainant fell asleep, he fled with all the gold, cash, and Kumar's mobile phone. He further disclosed that the stolen gold was hidden with his elder brother Pintu, who lives in Amritsar with the accused in the same house. The stolen gold ornaments weighing 1.290 kg were recovered,' DCP Valsan said. Following the alleged theft, an FIR was filed after a preliminary inquiry under sections 305 (a) (theft) and 123 (hurt by poison) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

After Sindoor, JeM begins drive for funds
JAMMU: After suffering major setbacks in Operation Sindoor, Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM) has launched a Rs 3.91 billion fundraising drive under the garb of building 313 mosques, mirroring Lashkar-e-Taiba's decentralisation model, security officials said. Backed by ISI, JeM is using digital wallets like EasyPaisa and Sadapay, controlled by founder Masood Azhar 's family, to bypass scrutiny by FATF. Several accounts are linked to Azhar's brother Talha Al Saif, son Abdullah Azhar, and other commanders. Over 250 wallets are reportedly active, with social media posters, videos and Azhar's letters urging donations. Officials said JeM aims to decentralise training camps and ensure long-term financing for ops.
