Warning issued after scammers ID themselves as former sheriff

The Champaign County Sheriff's Office posted the warning on social media.
It said they received reports that someone used their old phone number and identified themselves as 'Deputy Matt Melvin.'
The caller spoofed (937) 652-1311. Court Services now uses that number, according to the sheriff's office.

The scammer tells people that they have missed jury duty, and a warrant is out for their arrest unless they immediately pay a fine.
The caller tells the person to do the following:
Go to a location with a Bitcoin ATM
Convert cash to Bitcoin
Transfer it to the scammer
'This is a scam. We will never demand payment over the phone. We do not use Bitcoin or request cryptocurrency for fines,' the sheriff's office said.
If anyone receives a similar call, they should take the following steps:
Hang up the phone immediately
Do not provide personal or financial information
Report the call to the Champaign County Sheriff's Office.

Man and woman found in car along Pacific Coast Highway were dead for several days, police say
The Ventura County Sheriff's Department is investigating the deaths of a man and woman who were found in a car near Point Mugu State Park on Wednesday evening. The unidentified couple were found in a vehicle by a passerby around 7:40 p.m. along Pacific Coast Highway near Vista Point, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. Search ongoing for 53-year-old man missing from Tehaleh area near Bonney Lake
Deputies are looking for a 53-year-old man who is reported missing from the Tehaleh area near Bonney Lake. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook at around 4:30 p.m. Thursday that Ronald Roemer, who is 5 feet 7 inches tall and 160 pounds, was last seen riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV)/quad. A quad is a four-wheeled vehicle typically used for recreational purposes. Roemer is diabetic and doesn't have his insulin, the post said. Deputies ask anyone who sees Roemer or knows his whereabouts to call 911.

Trump increasing federal law enforcement in DC beginning Thursday night

It comes just days after a well-known former Department of Government Efficiency staffer was assaulted in DC. 'President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens. Starting tonight, there will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C. President Trump is committed to making our Nation's capital safer for its residents, lawmakers, and visitors from all around the world,' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. A White House official confirmed to CNN that the increase in law enforcement presence will include federal officers in 'marked units, and highly visible.' The increased presence will start at midnight and begins as a 7-day effort, with the option to extend, the official added. The effort will be led by US Park Police, with participation from US Capitol Police, FBI, DC Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and others. It 'will be focused on high-traffic tourist areas and other known hotspots,' according to the official. Despite Trump's repeated claims of increased crime in DC, 2025 crime numbers are lower than last year's, according to a preliminary year-to-date crime comparison from DC Police.
