Chinese SUV that looks like a Rolls-Royce on the market for a fraction of the price

Published: | Updated:
The Zeekr 9X is the latest Chinese luxury car that will tempt buyers to ditch traditionally popular premium marques like Audi, BMW and Mercedes with its significantly cheaper price tag. The 9X SUV has been unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show where it has - surprisingly - drawn comparison to the enormous Rolls-Royce Cullinan... but for a fraction of the cost. Exact pricing of the large Chinese family car is not yet known but is rumoured to start from as little as £50k. That's some saving on the £300k commanded by the Roller equivalent.
But it's not just the price that stands to make the 9X appealing; the plug-in hybrid drivetrain promises more than 186 miles of EV-only driving combined with supercar performance. And Zeekr is ready to rattle the established Western luxury SUV market with its uber-luxurious interior and the practicality that positions it against big names like the Range Rover. It's not confirmed if or when the 9X could arrive in the UK, but Zeekr is expected to start selling some of its models on our shores from 2026.
Zeekr sits under Shanghai parent company Geely – which also owns Polestar, Volvo and Lotus amongst others – and has former Bentley chief designer Stefan Sielaff in its staple of automotive experts. Alongside the 9X's reveal, Zeekr also confirmed plans to arrive in the UK from next year, with Zeekr Europe CEO Lothar Schupet telling the Independent: 'We are in discussion with dealer groups to enter the UK. 'Our plan is to be live in the UK early next year and we're trying to accelerate as much as we can.'
The Zeekr 9X is a large SUV measuring 5,290mm long (longer than the Range Rover's 5,252mm) with a wheelbase of 3,220mm, and offers either six or seven seating options for maximum big family practicality. For those looking for a room limo, there's an option to have four spaced-out chairs with 'executive style' seating. The 9X's 900V architecture can handle 480kW ultra-rapid charging, which delivers 310 miles of charge in just nine minutes.
The plug-in hybrid SUV will use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors for a total range of 932 miles; this makes it the first Zeekr model to use its 'Super Hybrid' technology. The 'Super Electric Hybrid' tech will merge pure electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extender advantages to promise disruptive efficiency and performance. Super Hybrids with huge combined ranges are one of the biggest emerging trends in new Chinese cars, with the Jaecoo 9HS and forthcoming Omoda 9 SHS both using 'Super Hybrid Systems'.
But for the Zeekr 9X it's the supercar-like three-second sprint time from 0 to 62mph that will get heads turning, more so than its Rolls-Royce Cullinan looks. The chrome detailing and large imposing waterwall grille are both very similar to the Cullinan, as is the angular, boxy shape. But it also has hints of the Rivian R1S, the Range Rover and the Jaecoo 9HS.
And then there's some fancy, luxury design features such as the 'Ring Screen Star Diamond' taillight assembly with 43,343 individual diamond-cut facets called the 'Side Wing Star Diamond Matrix' which complements the 9X's front-end design. Zeekr is already on the roads in Australia but is yet to reach the UK.
However, as the 9X uses the same SEA architecture as Geely's Volvo and Polestar brands, right-hand drive is a natural step. And while the 9X hasn't been confirmed for Australia, Mars Chen, CEO of Zeekr International told EV Central that the country will get either a smaller (but still large) SUV than the 9X, or the 9X itself. Neither the pipeline smaller SUV or the 9X are big volume cars, but they shoot Zeekr into a new territory of ultra-luxury car production.
Chinese tech advancements on the Zeekr 9X
The 9X will be the first Zeekr model to feature the G-Pilot intelligent driving solution. This builds on Zeekr's Level 3 autonomous driving architecture and utilises the ZEEA 3.0 central computing digital architecture to improve end-to-end communication response speed by 50 per cent. The 9X will use five LiDAR units – one long-range LiDAR and four supplementary short-range LiDARs for blind-spot coverage – for 'four layers of 360-degree perception capabilities.'
How much will the Zeekr 9X cost?
The price of the 9X SUV is not yet confirmed, but Zeekr's 009 people mover costs $130,000 and the 9X is touted to start from just under £51,000 ($68,000) and go up to around £102,000 ($136,000). This makes it almost a sixth of the price of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan which starts at just under £300,000, with exact prices depending on specification.

Italy resisting calls from Pirelli to tighten curbs on Chinese shareholder, sources say
ROME, June 4 (Reuters) - The Italian government is resisting calls from Pirelli's ( opens new tab executive vice-chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera to tighten curbs imposed on the tyremaker's Chinese investor, sources said. Chinese state group Sinochem ( opens new tab is Pirelli's largest investor with a 37% stake, while Tronchetti Provera's Camfin vehicle holds a 27.3% shareholding. Tronchetti Provera has been the company's top boss for more than three decades. Pirelli itself and Camfin are at odds with Sinochem, claiming that its substantial holding poses a risk to Pirelli's ambitions to expand its business in the United States. Washington is cracking down on Chinese technology in the automotive industry, by banning key software and hardware from Chinese-controlled companies in connected vehicles on U.S. roads. Tronchetti Provera is lobbying the government to take further action to limit the Chinese influence at Pirelli, two sources familiar with the matter said, by strengthening the restrictions that Rome imposed on Sinochem in 2023 through the golden power rules aimed at protecting strategic assets. However, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's administration has so far rebuffed these calls, the sources added, asking not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter. Rome's cautious stance partly stems from concerns it would rely excessively on its golden powers, one of the sources said, at a time when Italy faces a legal dispute with UniCredit over the way it uses the tool in vetting banking deals. All parties declined to comment. The government, which has ruled that Pirelli must not be subject to instructions from the Chinese investor, last November launched an investigation to check whether the presence of Sinochem executives on the tyremaker's board was in breach of these curbs. The inquiry is under way and before considering a harder stance on Sinochem, the government will at least check for violations of existing restrictions, the second source said. Emanuele Orsini, the head of Italian business lobby Confindustria of which Pirelli is a leading member, called on the government to defend the autonomy of the Italian group. "Part of Pirelli's shareholding, which is now in the hands of the Chinese government, is not approving the balance sheets and is therefore jamming up Pirelli, so I think something has to be done," Orsini said on Wednesday. In previous remarks on Tuesday, Orsini argued Sinochem should cut its stake in Formula One tyre supplier Pirelli to below 25%. Talks over governance adjustments have so far failed, with Camfin and Sinochem remaining far apart. Last month, the Chinese company described a proposal put forward by Pirelli to solve problems as "seriously unfair", while Camfin said that Sinochem's approach could lead to breaking the shareholder pact still in place between the two largest investors. Should the agreement be dropped, Sinochem and Camfin would be in a position to present separate slates at Pirelli's shareholders' meeting (AGM) next year, with one of them potentially taking full control of Pirelli's board. Two separate sources told Reuters that Tronchetti Provera was relying on further government support through golden powers in the event of a final clash with Sinochem at the AGM. Pirelli has been posting good results despite ongoing struggles in the auto industry. Its net profit rose 27% in the first quarter, while revenues were up 4%.

EU, China tackle trade issues ahead of leaders' summit
PARIS, June 4 (Reuters) - The European Union's trade chief on Wednesday said Brussels and Beijing were working hard to address issues in their trade relationship ahead of a July summit, as Europe joined a chorus of alarm over China's stranglehold on critical minerals. Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic described talks in Paris with China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao as "focused and in depth", though there was no clear sign of progress in resolving the tit-for-tat dispute over European tariffs on Chinese-made EVs and Chinese anti-dumping measures on European brandy. U.S. President Donald Trump's upending of global trade has injected energy into EU trade negotiations with countries including China, although the EU still has deep concerns over what it calls market-distorting Chinese state aid and barriers to the Chinese market. The talks took place against a backdrop of growing concern about China's export restrictions on critical minerals and magnets which have impacted supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers and semi-conductor companies globally. Europe faces a delicate task to advance its own trading relationship with China without riling the Trump administration, which has hit European steel and aluminium with 50% tariffs and has threatened the bloc with 50% reciprocal tariffs if no trade deal is forthcoming. Sefcovic held separate meetings in Paris with Wang and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and he said talks with the U.S. were moving in the right direction. Europe's diversification of raw material supply chains is critical to guaranteeing economic autonomy, EU Industry Commissioner Stephane Sejourne said on Wednesday. "We must reduce our dependencies on all countries, particularly on countries like China, on which we are more than 100% dependent," Sejourne told a press conference in Brussels. European and Chinese leaders are due to meet next month at a summit in Beijing to mark 50 years of diplomatic ties. China is the EU's second largest trading partner after the United States, with bilateral trade reaching 793 billion euros in 2023, according to EU data. Shares in Europe's Airbus ( opens new tab rose on Wednesday as evidence of talks to sell hundreds of planes to China gathered pace. The dispute with Beijing over Chinese duties on brandy is proving tougher to resolve with the French cognac industry bearing the brunt of the levies. France's trade minister Laurent Saint-Martin told Wang he wanted "responsible dialogue" while Wang said it was necessary to find solutions based on "win-win cooperation", according to a Chinese commerce ministry statement.

Brazil currency seen flat in near-term, restrained by trade worries: Reuters poll
BUENOS AIRES, June 4 (Reuters) - Brazil's real currency is expected to trade relatively steady in coming months, restrained by concerns over a deterioration in the country's external accounts, a Reuters poll showed. The real , is approaching the mid-year mark in better shape than expected at the start of 2025, with support from higher local interest rates and a weaker U.S. dollar globally. But investor doubts over the ability of Latin America's largest economy to keep funding its current account gap have added recently to concerns about the fiscal deficit and how to fix it. In 12 months, the local currency is forecast to change hands near its value on Tuesday of 5.64 per dollar, losing only 1.9% to 5.75, according to the median estimate of 27 foreign exchange analysts polled May 30 to June 3. The latest consensus projection for the end of June at 5.70 per dollar is 4.7% stronger than the 5.97 rate forecast in a January poll, when the currency was still recovering from a bad spell at the end of 2024. Itau Unibanco analysts cited Brazil's favorable interest rate spread and hopes of progress in trade talks between the United States and China as factors underpinning the real. "However, a (potential) trade agreement between the U.S. and other countries increases the chance of keeping the so-called American exceptionalism in place", the bank's economists added. "This, combined with domestic fiscal uncertainties and unfavorable external accounts dynamics, limits more positive scenarios for the currency." Challenges for Brazil's exporters include a decrease in poultry shipments broadly due to an avian influenza outbreak as well as lower Chinese soybean imports. Of 16 respondents to an extra question on risks to estimates for the real in the coming year, six tilted towards a stronger currency, five expected it to weaken and another five expressed neutral views. For the Mexican peso , five of 12 respondents expected it to strengthen, four saw risks of weakening, and three were neutral. According to the poll, the peso is set to depreciate 6% in 12 months to 20.46 per U.S. dollar from 19.23 on Tuesday. In Argentina, the peso is expected to trade at 1,440 per dollar in 12 months, just below the expected upper limit of its official adjustable trading band, set in April at 1,400 plus a 1% monthly increase. So far this year, the real has gained 9.6%, the Mexican peso is up 8.3% and Argentina's currency has lost 13% - much less than some feared after the country loosened its capital controls.
