Gov. Ivey speaks at Alabama League of Municipalities convention
The Alabama League of Municipalities is meeting for its annual convention at the Von Braun Center this week.
Gov. Kay Ivey opened the convention Tuesday, discussing the laws passed this year she feels will most benefit Alabama cities. She mentioned several bills she said will keep communities safer, including one that would ban glock switches and another putting restrictions on bail for violent offenders.
The governor said she wants to see one more bill passed.
'I've called on legislative leadership to bring the Back the Blue bill to the floor tomorrow for a final vote,' Ivey said.
House Bill 202, known as the Back the Blue Protection Act, would rewrite state law to provide more legal immunity for officers in on-duty incidents. It would bar lawsuits that could not show an officer's conduct was reckless and did not have a law enforcement purpose.
'The Back the Blue Act would provide legal protection for law enforcement to carry out their duties courageously and effectively without fear of Monday morning quarterbacking in the courts,' Ivey said.
Supporters of the bill say they want officers to know they have the support of lawmakers, but house democrats have pushed back.
House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels has said he is concerned the bill would protect officers who are not acting in good faith and make it nearly impossible to prosecute a bad cop. The governor said Tuesday she want to see the Back the Blue act pass Wednesday, on the last day of the legislative session.
In her remarks, Ivey asked league members to call their state legislators and give their support.
League of Municipalities Executive Director Greg Cochran said the partnership between the state and its municipalities is an important one.
'We've been very blessed through the years to have a good working relationship with, not only the governors that have served our state, but also the legislature,' Cochran said.
He said the Alabama League of Municipalities helps their members acquire resources, like state grants, that help build infrastructure.
'You can't raise enough money internally to do the projects that we have today,' Cochran said 'It costs over a million dollars to build one mile of road. It takes a collaboration between state and federal policymakers to make that work.'
Cochran said the convention is a good opportunity for city leaders to speak with those at the state level each year and share ideas about how to tackle difficult issues, like affordable housing, job availability and ensuring people have access to childcare.

Sen. John Cornyn (D-Texas) is asking the Justice Department (DOJ) to investigate groups —including former Rep. Beto O'Rourke's (D) Powered by People — that have allegedly helped fund Texas Democrats who fled the state to stall a GOP mid-decade redistricting plan. 'I write to encourage the Department of Justice to open an investigation into potential violations of federal law committed by the Political Action Committees and special interest groups providing funding and assistance to members of the Texas House of Representatives who absconded from the state and violated their duties to the citizens of Texas,' Cornyn wrote in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi. 'These outside groups appear to be acting in violation of federal public corruption and election laws.' More than 50 Texas state legislators left the Lone Star State earlier this month to break quorum, depriving the state House of the numbers it needs to move forward with a redistricting plan backed by President Trump. The proposal, which passed through the state Senate on Tuesday, would net Republicans five additional House seats and has triggered redistricting talks in other states on both sides of the aisle ahead of the 2026 midterms. Cornyn in his letter called out O'Rourke, alleging that his political group funded 'luxurious private jets' for the quorum-breaking lawmakers, along with food, lodging and logistical support from other groups. The latest move from the senator follows his recent call for the FBI to help track down quorum-breakers, comes as he seeks to fend off a conservative primary challenge from Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) in next year's election. Recent polling has shown Cornyn trailing Paxton, in some cases by double digits, though his team is projecting optimism that they'll be able to fend off the challenge. Paxton has also swung at O'Rourke and his group, which he's claimed engaged in unlawful fundraising activity to help the Democratic state lawmakers. He was granted a temporary restraining order last week, and is now seeking O'Rourke's arrest as he alleges that the order was violated. Meanwhile, Texas Democrats are trying to wait out the ongoing 30-day special session as their absence puts a pause on advancing the new Congressional map, but Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has said he planned to call another immediately afterward. The venture comes with hefty expenses. In addition to the costs of living away from their homes in Texas, the participating Democrats each face $500-a-day fines, along with the threat of arrest and removal from their seats. California's Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has pledged to redraw the Golden State's congressional maps in a move that could counter Texas's gains with five additional Democratic House seats, depending on whether Republicans move forward with redistricting.

Vulnerable Democrats hammered with scathing ad handcuffing them to Mamdani, Jeffries
FIRST ON FOX: The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) is rolling out a new ad tying the policies of "radical" Democrats, like New York City socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, to the future outlook of the Democratic Party. The new message, targeting 25 vulnerable House Democrats across the country with a modest ad buy on digital platforms, hammers the party on "Project 2026" and outlines what the Republicans say Democrats will offer voters in the midterms. "Hakeem Jeffries' plan to remake America," the ad says. "Raise taxes on working families, impeach President Trump." The ad then plays a clip of Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries saying, "Donald Trump must be removed from office" and Dem. Rep. Dina Titus saying, "I'd like to impeach the bastard right now." The ad then claims Democrats want to "open the border" and "restart the invasion" of illegal immigrants that came into the country during the Biden administration, before quoting two Democrats, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Gabe Vasquez, calling to abolish ICE and defund the police. "They riot, they loot," the ad continues before showing two clips of Mamdani saying "we are unapologetic about our socialism" and promoting the "abolition of private property." Jeffries then says in a clip, "Chip at it aggressively until we can unravel the whole system." Tom Suozzi of New York, Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, Emilia Sykes of Ohio, Eugene Vindman of Virginia, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Frank Mrvan of Indiana and others. "This is the America Democrats want to build: Raising taxes for working families, baseless impeachments, wide open borders, abolishing ICE, defunding the police, and turning America into a socialist, crime-filled dystopia," NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella told Fox News Digital. "House Republicans are the only thing standing between you and the nightmare of 'Project 2026.'" The NRCC released a memo on Tuesday morning in which it knocked Jeffries for failing to meet a self-imposed deadline to roll out a new vision for America with a Democratic-controlled House. The Hill reported in April that Jeffries committed that "over these next 100 days, House Democrats are going to lay out a blueprint for a better America. And you will see a vision for this country's future that isn't about Donald Trump. It's all about you." With those 100 days having already elapsed, the NRCC published a satirical memo titled "Project 2026," in which they accused the Democrats of being out of step with the American people. In response, Viet Shelton, a spokesperson for the DCCC, fired back at the messaging from the NRCC. "House Republicans have done nothing to improve the lives of everyday Americans," Shelton said. "It's no wonder they're desperately attempting to distract from their disastrous record of higher costs for working families and ripping away health care from millions while giving tax breaks to the wealthiest few. Poll after poll shows voters across the country are fed up with their billionaire-first agenda and are going to reject them next year."
