DRI nabs foreign national woman on bus with crystal meth worth Rs 7.63 cr
The woman, who was travelling from Delhi to the Karnataka capital, was held on a specific tip-off that she was carrying psychotropic substances, the DRI official said.
'A team comprising personnel from DRI and Customs in Pune mounted surveillance along the highway and intercepted the suspect in transit. An initial search of the passenger and her baggage did not yield any contraband. However, during a detailed rummaging of the bus, officers located a second bag concealed at the rear of the vehicle," the official said.
'A thorough inspection of the hidden baggage revealed six salwar suits, each folded with specially designed cardboard inserts. These inserts had cavities lined with polythene, which contained a white crystalline substance. Field testing confirmed the presence of amphetamine in the 3.815 kg of recovered substance, which is suspected to be crystal meth," the official added.
She was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and further probe into the smuggling network is underway, he added. PTI SPK BNM

Anti-sacrilege bill: Punjab Speaker forms 15-member select committee led by Inderbir Nijjar to consult stakeholders
IANS After three hours of intense debate of allegations and counter allegations, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday unanimously decided to refer the highly emotive Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scriptures Bill of 2025 to a select committee for consultation with all stakeholders. Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Saturday formed a 15-member select committee of the House for wider consultations with stakeholders on an anti-sacrilege bill. The move came days after the Punjab Assembly unanimously decided to refer the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025, proposing punishment up to life imprisonment for sacrilege acts against religious scriptures, to a select committee of the House. The panel will submit its report on the bill within six months. The 15-member panel will be headed by AAP MLA from Amritsar South and former minister Inderbir Singh Nijjar, according to a notification issued by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha secretariat on Saturday. The members of the committee are -- AAP MLAs Ajay Gupta, Amandeep Kaur Arora, Inderjit Kaur Mann, Jagdeep Kamboj, Neena Mittal, Baljinder Kaur, Budh Ram, Bram Shanker Jimpa, Madan Lal Bagga, and Mohammad Jamil Ur Rahman; BJP MLA Jangi Lal Mahajan, Congress legislators Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal; and Shiromani Akali Dal legislator Manpreet Singh Ayali. Punjab Advocate General Maninderjit Singh Bedi will be the ex-officio member of the committee. The anti-sacrilege bill was introduced on July 14 in the House. The bill mandates strict punishment, extending up to life imprisonment, for the desecration of holy scriptures, including the Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Bible and Quran. According to the bill, any person found guilty of sacrilege may face imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life. The guilty shall also be liable to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh, which may extend up to Rs 10 lakh. Those attempting to commit the offence may be sentenced to three to five years and shall also be liable to pay a fine which may extend up to Rs 3 lakh. Individuals found abetting the crime will be punished in accordance with the offence committed. Under the Bill, offence means any sacrilege, damage, destruction, defacing, disfiguring, de-colouring, de-filling, decomposing, burning, breaking or tearing of any holy scripture or part thereof. Sacrilege has been an emotive issue in Punjab. There has been a demand from various quarters for stringent punishment for sacrilege after the incidents of desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib in 2015 in Faridkot. In the police firing at anti-sacrilege protesters in October 2015, two persons were killed in Behbal Kalan, while some persons were injured at Kotkapura in Faridkot.

Man accused in minor's gang-rape acquitted after 8 yrs in jail
Bareilly: After spending more than eight years in jail, a man from Bareilly (who was 20 at that time) accused in a 2017 gang-rape case was acquitted by Special Judge (Pocso court) Devashish Pandey on Friday. Dhanpal Kashyap couldn't afford a lawyer till 2020. Following his mother's request in Oct 2021, the Bareilly court appointed a counsel for him. Advocate Shashikant Sharma, who represented Kashyap, said, "We'll move court to seek a compensation of Rs 50 lakh, as the prolonged case not only ruined his reputation but also deprived him of the chance to settle down in life. He was finally released on Saturday night." On July 11, 2017, a 16-year-old girl was gang-raped at a village in Bareilly. A case was registered against Dhanpal and another man, Veerpal, and later a charge sheet was filed in court. The girl's dad told police the men assaulted her at gunpoint, but no pistol was found, Shashikant added. The medico-legal report said, "There are no signs of recent sexual assault; however, sexual violence cannot be ruled out." "My son was just 20 then. The girl was from our caste and was known to Veerpal, and my son was only their common friend. The case was slapped on him due to enmity. He was made a scapegoat. Fortunately, the girl told the truth in court," said Dhanwati, his mother. The advocate added, "Dhanpal was stuck in jail... he lost over eight years."

Liquor scam: YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy appears before SIT
Amaravati, Jul 19 (PTI) Rajampeta LS member PV Midhun Reddy on Saturday appeared before the Special Investigation Team probing the alleged Rs 3,200-crore liquor scam during the previous YSRCP regime. The YSRCP leader arrived in Vijayawada to attend the probe and his questioning comes in the wake of the arrest of other accused persons–Dhanunjay Reddy, Krishna Mohan Reddy and Balaji Govindappa. The opposition party slammed Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for allegedly indulging in vindictive behaviour and foisting 'false' cases against people close to YSRCP supremo YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The case against Mithun Reddy is part of a larger vindictive conspiracy to arrest people who are in close proximity to the party leadership, said senior YSRCP leader Malladi Vishnu in a party release. 'But we will bounce back to call the bluff of Chandrababu Naidu," he said, adding that the more vindictive the actions of the Naidu government, the stronger YSRCP's resolve becomes to fight back and expose the 'failures and corruption' of the coalition government. 'I am confident that justice will prevail and that the judiciary will act fairly.
