Project launched to test new tech that sends text messages as they are typed
'Real-time texts' often improve the digital communication experience of people who are deaf or hard-of hearing. It allows mobile phone users to see messages come through, letter-by-letter.
Those with the technology enabled on their smartphones can use it by calling someone else's number and selecting the real-time text option. It is typically used by people who are deaf when contacting emergency services.

The introduction is one of the many measures included in EU directives which seek to make the use of technology more accessible for everyone, including those with additional needs.
It has been in place in other countries for a number of years.
Vodafone has announced the technology today, which will allow their customers to communicate with 999 operators, through real-time texts, on Apple and Android devices.
Communications minister Patrick O'Donovan and CEO of national deaf charity Chime, Mark Byrne, have welcomed the introduction of the service.

Apple's new investment in US may be just enough to appease Trump, for now at least
As a US company that relies on overseas manufacturing, Apple must feel like it is stuck stuck between the Wall Street rock and an increasing tough, tariff-filled hard place. The company made a move to try to stave off the worst of the US tariff repercussions this week when it announced it would invest an additional $100 billion (€860 million) in the US over four years, beefing up its American manufacturing capabilities. That is on top of the $500 billion it already announced in February. It may be enough to side-step the worst of the tariffs hit - for now. But is it enough to keep the US president happy long term? On the face of it, this is good news for the president and his agenda. An extra $100 billion makes for some good headlines. Apple chief executive Tim Cook outlined big plans for the company's $2.5 billion investment in Corning in Kentucky, where displays for its iPhones and Apple Watches are currently made. The plan is eventually to have all glass for the devices made at the facility. READ MORE There was also a lot he didn't say. He didn't specify if this additional investment would lead to any new jobs at Apple itself, with much of the focus instead on its manufacturing partnerships. Though any jobs created as a result of Apple's extra investment in these companies will go down as a plus for the tech giant. [ Trump hails additional $100bn Apple investment in US Opens in new window ] Apple has already said it will create 20,000 jobs in the US over the coming four years, as part of the February announcement that saw it commit to producing AI servers in the US. The company has traditionally been more conservative about hiring, and in an environment where tech companies are continuing to trim headcount, it seems wise not to over-promise on that front. The Apple chief also didn't commit to any sort of timeline for US-made iPhones, saying only that it would be 'elsewhere for a while'. But is anyone really expecting Apple to pack up its manufacturing abroad and shift it to the US to avoid tariffs? Even if Apple wanted to, there are several reasons why that plan won't work. Or at least, not on the timeline Trump is seeking. Like many companies that manufacture at scale, Apple has built up a significant and complex manufacturing operation abroad. Much of that is in China, although the company has been moving some production to India and Vietnam in response to Donald Trump 's tariff plans. Trying to replicate that operation and its associated supply chains in the US would take time; building up the expertise alone is a huge undertaking. And given the reaction of Wall Street when the matter was raised a few months ago, investors would be unlikely to welcome the plan with open arms. Even if Apple could avoid tariffs by assembling devices – at greater cost, thanks to higher wages – in the US, some components will need to made overseas and imported anyway, and inevitably be hit by the tariffs along the way. That will inevitably raise costs for American consumers. According to a note by Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan, assembling iPhones in the US would increase costs by about a quarter, and that is before the impact of potential reciprocal tariffs on imported components is taken into account. Apple may have built its reputation on making 'magical' devices, but even the tech giant would find it difficult to master this particular trick.

Apple crushes Wall Street expectations as iPhone sales soar
Apple has reported sales and profit that far surpassed expectations, showing that its efforts to re-route its sprawling global supply chain away from US President Donald Trump's trade war have so far succeeded. Apple said it earned $94.04 billion in revenue for its fiscal third quarter ended June 28, up nearly 10% from a year earlier and beating analyst expectations of $89.54 billion, according to LSEG data. Its earnings per share of $1.57 per share topped expectations of $1.43 per share. Sales of iPhones, the California-based company's best-selling product, were up 13.5% to $44.58 billion, beating analyst expectations of $40.22 billion. Apple has been shifting production of products bound for the US, sourcing iPhones from India and other products such as Macs and Apple Watches from Vietnam. But the company had warned investors that US tariffs could cost it $900m in the fiscal third quarter, and it trimmed its annual share buyback programme by $10 billion, a move analysts viewed as helping to free up cash to remain nimble in uncertain times. The ultimate tariffs many Apple products could face remain in flux, and many of its products are currently exempt. Sales in its Americas segment, which includes the US and could face tariff impacts, rose 9.3% to $41.2 billion. In an interview with Reuters, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company set seasonal records for upgrades of iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watches. He said Apple estimates about 1 percentage point of its 9.6% of sales growth in the quarter was attributable to customers making purchases ahead of potential tariffs. "We saw evidence in the early part of the quarter, specifically, of some pull-ahead related to the tariff announcements," Cook told Reuters, though he also said the active user base for iPhones hit a record high in all geographies. The US is still negotiating with both China and India, with Trump saying India could face 25% tariffs as early as Friday. However, analysts said India could still retain cost advantages for Apple in the longer term. Tariffs are only one of Apple's challenges. The company faces competition from rivals such as Samsung Electronics in a tough market for premium-priced mobile phones. On the software front, Apple faces challenges from Alphabet, which is quickly weaving AI features into its competing Android operating system. Apple has delayed the release of an AI-enriched version of Siri, its virtual assistant, but Tim Cook said the company is "making good progress on a personalized Siri." He also said Apple, which has thus far not engaged in the massive capital expenditures of its Big Tech rivals to pursue AI, is "significantly growing" its investments in artificial intelligence. "Apple has always been about taking the most advanced technologies and making them easy to use and accessible for everyone, and that's at the heart of our AI strategy," Mr Cook said. Apple faces regulatory rulings in Europe that threaten to undermine its lucrative App Store business. Apple said sales from its services business, which includes the App Store as well as music and cloud storage, were $27.42 billion, topping analyst expectations of $26.8 billion. Sales of wearables such as AirPods and Apple Watches were $7.4 billion, missing estimates of $7.82 billion. Mac sales of $8.05 billion beat expectations of $7.26 billion, while iPads hit $6.58 billion in sales, missing expectations of $7.24 billion. In Greater China, where Apple has faced long delays in approval to introduce AI features on its devices, sales were $15.37 billion, up from a year ago and above expectations of $15.12 billion, according to a survey of five analysts from data firm Visible Alpha. Apple said gross margins were 46.5%, beating analyst expectations of 45.9%, according to LSEG estimates.

Apple leads surge in global tech shares after Trump tariff relief
Global technology stocks advanced today in a relief rally after the latest tariff salvo from Donald Trump largely exempted industry heavyweights from his threat to impose 100% levy on chips and semiconductors. Trump said the new tariff rate would apply to "all chips and semiconductors coming into the United States," but would not apply to companies that had made a commitment to manufacture in the US or were in the process of doing so. Apple's stock rose 2.9% in premarket trading after Trump's announcement on Wednesday that the company will invest an additional $100 billion in the US, a move that could help it sidestep potential tariffs on iPhones. Semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplier Applied Materials and chipmakers Texas Instruments, GlobalFoundries and Broadcom - Apple's partners in the investment effort - climbed between 1.1% and 8.5%. Other US-listed chipmakers also rose, with Advanced Micro Devices up 2.2%, Intel gaining 0.8% and Nvidia up 1.5%. "From a high level, the 100% headline number seems intimidating, but in practice we expect a much lower impact," BofA Global Research analysts led by Vivek Arya said in a note. European chipmakers also joined the rally, with ASML, ASMI and BE Semiconductor Industries climbing more than 3% each. JPMorgan analysts expect the proposed 100% semiconductor tariff would not be stacked on top of the 15% baseline tariff agreed between the European Union and the US last week. According to EU officials, the framework trade deal will have zero-for-zero tariffs on semiconductor-making equipment. Germany's Infineon said it could not speculate on possible semiconductor tariffs, as no details have been disclosed yet. Its shares were up 1.3%. Trump's latest on semiconductor tariffs seemingly rules out Taiwanese chip contract manufacturer TSMC, which makes chips for most US companies, including Nvidia, as it has factories in the US. "The market remains keen to buy TSMC on dips. Investors also believe they need to remain positioned in AI - with or without tariffs," UBS analysts said. TSMC shares closed almost 5% higher to hit all-time highs, while Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix climbed 2.5% and 1.4%, respectively. South Korea's Samsung and SK Hynix will also not be subjected to 100% tariffs on chips, the country's top trade envoy said. Samsung has invested in two chip fabrication plants in Austin and Taylor, Texas, while SK Hynix has announced plans to build an advanced chip packaging plant and research and development facility for artificial intelligence products in Indiana.
