Supreme Court refuses urgent hearing on plea for protection of theatres screening 'Thug Life' in Karnataka

The Hindua day ago

The Supreme Court on Monday (June 9, 2025) refused to grant an urgent hearing on a plea seeking protection against alleged threats over the screening of Kamal Haasan's film "Thug Life" in Karnataka theatres.
A Bench comprising Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Manmohan asked the theatre association from Karnataka to approach the Karnataka High Court instead.
A lawyer, appearing for the petitioner, referred to open threats from fringe groups opposing the screening of the film in Karnataka, and said "there are open threats by fringe elements and they are saying theatres will be set on fire." Justice Mishra, while refusing to grant an urgent hearing, said, "Install fire extinguishers" and asked the petitioner to move the High Court.
"Thug Life" released in cinema halls across the country on June 5.
The Tamil movie, which reunites the 70-year-old actor with filmmaker Mani Ratnam after 1987's "Nayakan", could not be released in Karnataka after Mr. Haasan's comments about Kannada language sparked a major controversy.
It was also released in Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam.

Supreme Court Refuses To Reduce Lawyer's Sentence For Abusing Woman Judge, Says...

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today rejected a petition by a lawyer convicted of abusing a woman judicial officer in a court in Delhi. The top court refused to reduce the imprisonment sentence to 6 months and said, "Today, the majority of our officers in Delhi are women. They will not be able to function if somebody can get away like this. Think of their state," the bench commented orally. The bench of Justice PK Mishra and Justice Manmohan was hearing a plea against the order of the Delhi High Court, which upheld the conviction of a lawyer who used abusive language towards a woman judge in a challan matter inside the trial court. The lawyer used abusive, vulgar expletives after the judge had adjourned the matter. While hearing the plea, Justice Manmohan verbally remarked, "Just see the inspection report, the language used, we cannot even say in the open court". Justice Manmohan further said that if a stern view is not taken against such behaviour, women judicial officers would not be ensured a safe work environment. "Today, the majority of our officers in Delhi are women. They will not be able to function like this- if somebody can get away like this. Think of their state," the bench said. The lawyer, Sanjay Rathore, was convicted by the trial court and sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for the offence under Section 509 (intending to outrage modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code, 3 months under Section 189 (injury to public servant), and an additional three months under Section 353 (assault or criminal force against public servant to deter them from their duty). The trial court directed that the sentences would run consecutively, resulting in a total sentence of two years. Later, the High Court said that the sentence would run concurrently and not consecutively, reducing his sentence to 18 months from two years The counsel for the petitioner urged the Supreme Court bench to reduce his term of imprisonment to six months. He stressed several "mitigating factors" for this consideration, like his ageing parents and young children. He informed that the Bar Council has also acted against the lawyer.

'What Ridiculous Lyrics': Punjabi Rapper Baba Sehgal Slams AR Rahman's Hit Song

Last Updated: Baba Sehgal shared that it might be possible that AR Rahman and Mani Ratnam likely didn't understand the Hindi lyrics of the song themselves Singer Baba Sehgal has disclosed his dissatisfaction with the lyrics of the Hindi version of the iconic track ' Rukmani Rukmani ' from the film Roja, composed by AR Rahman. In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Sehgal shared that he was approached for the Hindi version of the Tamil song during a performance in Chennai. An assistant director played the Tamil version for him, but he did not pay much attention and agreed to it. Sehgal claimed that Rahman and his team pleaded for his help to release the song, leading Sehgal to contact friends who requested he sing the Hindi version. 'When I saw the Hindi lyrics, I thought, ' Kitne wahiyat geet hain yaar. Kisne likha hai ye! (The lyrics are ridiculous, who has written it!) The issue is that songs in a different language sound fine, but in our language, we understand the meaning better. I don't think Rahman or Ratnam knew what those Hindi lyrics meant," Sehgal shared. Just One Collaboration With AR Rahman Sehgal revealed that the collaboration with Rahman was limited to just this one song. 'It was forced upon me. I didn't agree with the song; I found it very cheap. Another woman was brought in to sing the female dialogues. Later, I asked Swetha Shetty to sing them as well, and she did so brilliantly. This was my first and last song with Rahman, as language proved a barrier. We never met again after that," he said. Who Is Baba Sehgal? Baba Sehgal is credited with introducing rap to India in 1992 with his song ' Thanda Thanda Paani '. Originally an electrical engineer, he rose to fame as a rap star in the early 1990s, aided by the rise of MTV. Over the years, he released several popular songs and later appeared in films. He continues to engage his audience by sharing songs and music-related videos on social media. First Published:

Released globally on May 16, the crime caper is written and directed by Lokkesh Ajls. For all the OTT lovers, the treat is coming your way. Eleven is all set to stream on Aha Tamil starting June 13, 2025. Eleven's cast and crew Eleven is produced by Ajmal Khan and Reyaa Hari under the banner of AR Entertainment. Other than the lead duo, the film also stars Shashank, Abhirami, Dileepan, Riythvika, Aadukalam Naren, Ravi Varma, Arjai and Kireeti Damaraju among others. This D. Imman musical is cinematographed by Karthik Ashokan and edited by N. B. Srikanth. Eleven's plot overview A series of murders targeting twins leads detective Aravind to investigate a masked killer named Benjamin. The killer is manipulating surviving twins into murdering their own siblings. As Aravind, assisted by Officer Manohar, pieces together clues, he uncovers the horrifying pattern behind the murders. A significant flashback reveals the killer's troubled past at a school, highlighting issues of neglect. Eleven's review The Times of India rated the movie 2.5 out of 5, and a part of their review read, 'The film guides you by the hand, showing you exactly where it's going. You're not so much solving it with Aravind as you are waiting for him to confirm what feels increasingly obvious. The events never get a chance to unfold naturally. The slightly ambivalent ending is a welcome touch over a neat resolution. At least it knew when to leave some questions hanging.' Do you think Eleven will find its due on OTT?
