I tested Perplexity vs Google AI overview with 7 prompts — the results were shocking

Search is undergoing a profound change. For decades, Google has dominated the web search world, with some 90% of all searches funnelled through the massive Google machine. But suddenly, with the arrival of artificial intelligence, things are starting to change, and seriously so.
Not only are people increasingly using AI products like ChatGPT as their default search tool, but companies like Perplexity are also building businesses around search services. The idea is to combine the power of AI analysis with the huge amount of conventional search data available at the end of a cursor.
But Google is fighting back. The company has recently released an advanced search function called AI Overviews, which aims to bridge the two disciplines and deliver the kind of informed search results the market demands. It's a new kind of search on steroids.
So how do the two approaches compare in everyday use? We take a look at Google's new AI Overviews and compare the results to Perplexity AI, to see which gives a better bang for the buck.
Prompt: Summarize the key contributions of John McCarthy, Geoffrey Hinton and Noam Shazeer to the development of artificial intelligence.
We thought we'd start with something close to home - a look at the architects of AI from the past. First impressions are that Google delivers a competent but fairly traditional results page from this request. Its answer of 238 words covers all the basic points and gives a good overview of the points as you'd expect.
Perplexity delivers over 400 words, but it's more than just the quantity that's impressive. It's the fact that the results are laid out in a much more engaging manner, with the user being encouraged to explore additional information in a variety of different ways. They can explore related data, look directly at the sources and even regenerate the results to get a different perspective. Where Google seems to do the bare minimum, Perplexity really seems to add user value.

Prompt: Create a 3-day itinerary for a first-time visitor to Tokyo on a modest budget. The user is interested in Japanese culture and food, but wants to avoid tourist traps.
This is a real kicker, a stark example of the old versus the new. Google completely fails to deliver any meaningful response, but instead retreats to a standard Google search. The answer merely features a selection of third-party websites offering tour advice. This is obviously beneficial to Google as it will no doubt allow it to earn ad revenue.
Perplexity, on the other hand, delivers a glorious 1000 words of real down-to-earth itinerary. This includes gorgeous photos, maps and itemized costings, which will be more than enough for the user to get a great idea of the proposed experience.

Prompt: What is the technology behind noise cancelling headphones?
Once again we can see the difference between traditional search results and new style AI analysis, although in this case the difference is not so great. Google's results are very credible with 186 words of explanation, along with a useful YouTube video.
Perplexity, however, takes it to a more advanced level. The explanation is roughly the same, but the prose is much more accessible to a layperson. Instead of using the word 'inverse', for example, the app chooses to use simpler English to explain how sound is cancelled. It's a subtle but important use of 500 words to achieve a more understandable answer.

Prompt: Explain the 'double-dig' method of garden bed preparation and contrast it to no-till farming
This is quite an obscure test, involving little-known agricultural techniques. But for gardeners it's a very important topic. Google's response is very workmanlike and informative, and uses 260 words to deliver a good answer to the question. The use of Reddit and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) are also great sources, which add authority to the answer.
Unfortunately for Google, Perplexity once again matches and exceeds in response quality. The RHS and Reddit are also mentioned, as is YouTube. But two things really make this answer stand out. First, the use of a great table to explain the differences at a glance and, most importantly, a conclusion, which gives a clear indication as to why no-dig is increasingly considered the better solution.

Prompt: What are the primary compliance challenges for a US-based tech startup under the EU's AI Act?
This request pushes search to the limits of topicality and obtuse legal documents. Surprisingly, Google's results are very lackluster. The search engine offers up a 57 word March 2025 'featured snippet' from an obscure third-party publication, and that's it. It shows no interest in digging deeper into the topic for the user.
Yet again Perplexity tries harder. We're talking 600 words set in a beautiful bullet point format, running through the main challenges and issues surrounding compliance. Along with 9 easily accessible sources and a handful of related subject matter links. Masterful.

Prompt: What does the history and potential future of blockchain and cryptocurrency look like?
This prompt clearly demonstrates why Google's AI Overview is unfortunately not really ready for prime time. The original prompt was something like 'explain cryptocurrency to a fifth grader', but when tested Google couldn't handle it and served up a lame Quora snippet. It's only when we changed the prompt to this one that AI Overview kicked into action, and delivered a reasonable result.
It's obvious there's not that much AI involved in AI Overview yet. Interestingly though, this was probably Google's best result. We got 400 words of densely packed information covering the topic clearly and succinctly. Perplexity was also good, providing 600 words and a nice table. Not much to choose between the two then.

Prompt: What kind of cat is this?
For the final prompt we thought we'd go with something a little more exotic. Both search platforms support image upload, so what better than to upload a friendly looking cat to get some more information?
Google takes the uploaded image as a prompt to display a page full of similar images, which aligns with its original image matching search. But a re-prompt of 'what kind of cat is this' then delivered a very short four line answer which, although correct, was not super helpful.
Perplexity's response was 246 words, with bullets points, covering coat pattern, fur, and the breed. Even a fun fact (calico cats are almost always female). Engaging and informative.

The king is dead, long live the king? Based on this showing, the rumors could indeed be true. The mighty Google may in fact be on the way to losing its grip on the world's search traffic. Is this the end of an era? Time will tell.
However if there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's never to discount the ability of the Google empire to strike back. Uniquely in the world, the company has the compute power, the data and the legendary AI pedigree to surprise us all.
Test Notes. It should be noted that we did not use any of the advanced Perplexity functions, but kept to the basic default service. Which make the results even more impressive. It's also important to recognize the fact that AI can get things wrong. Both services feature disclaimers which stress that users should not assume AI search responses are factually correct.
This is an early technology finding its feet, users should take care.

Apple's executives are thinking of acquiring Perplexity AI both to get more talent and to be able to offer an AI-based search engine in the future, according to Bloomberg . Adrian Perica, Apple's head of mergers and acquisitions, has reportedly already talked about the idea with services SVP Eddy Cue and the company's top decision-makers with it comes to its AI efforts. It's early stages, however: Apple has yet to talk to Perplexity about a bid, and the internal talks may not even lead to a formal offer. The executives also reportedly discussed an alternative, wherein instead of buying Perplexity outright, it'll team up with the AI company instead. Either way, the idea is to develop an AI search engine powered by Perplexity and to integrate Perplexity's technology into Siri. While Apple has yet to make a formal offer, Bloomberg says it met several times with Perplexity over the past few months. In May, Cue revealed that Apple discussed a possible Safari-integration with Perplexity while on the stand for Google's ongoing Search antitrust case. Cue took the stand due to Apple's long-standing deal with Google to make its search engine the default on the iPhone. (In turn, Apple gets billions of dollars a year — $18 billion in 2021 — from the arrangement.) Cue didn't share any definitive plans, however, including the possibility of an acquisition. If regulators order Apple to end its partnership with Google, purchasing Perplexity would make it easier for the company to develop an AI-based search engine. In addition, it would allow the company to acquire talent needed to be able to catch up with other companies when it comes to artificial intelligence. 6 things I always do when setting up a new phone

Megan Ellis / Android Authority I set up a new phone fairly often — whether it's moving to a new daily driver or secondary phone, or setting up one of the new best Android phones to review. Since I'm a creature of habit, I like to ensure that switching devices isn't too jarring, so I have created a bit of a routine when it comes to setting up a new device. While I may tweak my approach depending on whether I plan to use the phone as my new daily driver or as a secondary device (such as a camera smartphone), these are the essential steps I take with every phone. Using my Google backup to restore certain apps Megan Ellis / Android Authority Many Android manufacturers offer a phone clone utility that copies the data directly from your previous device. However, I prefer using my Google account to restore a backup from my main device for a number of reasons. Firstly, the cloning utilities on smartphones often require the new and old phone to be connected or near each other for some time. This means that I often feel like I can't use either phone during the transfer, which cuts me off from things like my chats and notifications. A minor issue, but still. Secondly, when restoring apps from my original phone, I am able to select which ones to install. This is a great feature, since I often accrue apps that I test for work that I don't necessarily use anymore but forget to uninstall. Selecting my preferred settings Megan Ellis / Android Authority There was a time that Android skins felt very similar, but over the years I've noticed more fragmentation when it comes to the default user interface (UI). So whenever I set up a new smartphone, I make sure to adjust the UI's settings to my ideal setup. This includes three-button navigation, permanent dark mode, switching to Eye Comfort mode, choosing an app drawer for my home screen if it's not on by default, and switching my control panel shortcuts to those I use the most. Many of the changes I make are to prevent my smartphone from triggering my migraines, but some of them are also due to habits I've built up after over a decade of using Android phones. A recent annoyance I've found with some Android phone brands is the attempt to switch users to a split notification panel by default. On some Android skins, there's no way to switch back to a combined notification and control panel, which really frustrates me. But when the option is there, I switch to the combined view. For example, when I recently set up the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, I switched back to the combined notification view in One UI 7. 3. Setting up Google Photos backups Joe Maring / Android Authority Even though I've tried to move away from Google Photos by self-hosting Immich instead, I still haven't made the transition fully. This is partially due to how Google Photos incorporates into my workflow, since I often take photos on my phone and then access them through the web to download and add them to a post I'm working on, for example. So, at least for now, Google Photos remains an essential utility for me. I back up photos across all my devices, even if I'm just using the phone for a two-week review period — especially since I often use review devices to take pictures of scenic areas and my pets. This also means that the photos I take with these devices are added to my Memories, which is one of my favorite Google Photos features. 4. Removing bloatware Megan Ellis / Android Authority If you've used Android, you'll be very familiar with bloatware — the non-essential, pre-installed apps that OEMs include on their devices. I find that this step is particularly needed when it comes to mid-range and budget smartphones, which tend to pack in a lot more bloat. I've found plenty of social media apps, games, and office software come pre-installed on devices, whether you use them or not. Sometimes these apps are OEM tools that I never use due to preferring cross-platform apps instead. But I've also found plenty of social media apps, games, and office software come pre-installed on devices whether you use them or not. Where possible, I uninstall any app or game that I don't use. Of course, some bloatware can't be uninstalled. In this case, I try to see if I can archive or disable the app so that I don't receive prompts to use it instead of my preferred software. 5. Signing into my most-used apps Megan Ellis / Android Authority To make sure that I start receiving important notifications on my new device, I sign into my most-used apps as soon as possible. These are usually my Gmail, Asana, and Slack accounts. However, if the phone is my new daily driver, I make sure to log into WhatsApp and restore my chat backup. I sign into my most-used apps as soon as possible. If an app isn't integral to getting work notifications or communications from my contacts, I'll take my time signing into it when I actually use it. For example, I don't rush when it comes to signing into my social media apps, especially since I go weeks without using some platforms. But missing a Slack notification or an important email to my secondary Gmail account (which is different to my backup account) means that I could miss important information about work or assignments. So I make sure to sign into these as soon as possible. 6. Restoring my 2FA Authenticator app backup Megan Ellis / Android Authority While two-factor authentication (2FA) undoubtedly has its benefits, I always worry about switching devices and no longer having access to my authenticator app. While I originally only used Microsoft Authenticator for my Microsoft account, over time, I began adding some other apps and websites to the tool. But I soon realized that the app doesn't automatically sync with the linked Microsoft account, meaning the different integrated services don't move over when you sign in on a new device. I eventually figured out that I first needed to create a backup on my old device, then restore that account backup on the new device. Whenever I set up a new smartphone, I make sure to restore my authenticator backup. Now, whenever I set up a new smartphone, I make sure to restore the account backup so that I can access my linked services. If you use a 2FA or multi-factor authentication (MFA) app, make sure you transfer your credentials so that you don't lose access. I'm often juggling more than one smartphone at a time, but I make sure to follow certain steps when setting them up. This makes switching between devices easier for me, while also providing me with the best experience when I change my main device. Too many times I've been caught out by not having the right settings or data on the smartphone I'm using, which can become an issue when my other devices are not around. Most people only have one smartphone to deal with, but these steps are helpful regardless of how many devices you're using. Just make sure to factory reset your old phone if you plan to sell it or give it away, once you're certain you have all the necessary information you need from it.
