Southampton vs Manchester City: Key players to watch in crucial Premier League clash

Business Upturn10-05-2025
As the Premier League season nears its climax, Southampton vs. Manchester City in Round 36 promises high stakes and high drama. With just three matches remaining, Manchester City eyes a top-three finish, while Southampton fights for Premier League survival. Set at St. Mary's Stadium, this weekend's showdown is one to watch. Here's a look at the key players who could make the difference in this vital encounter. 1. Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)
The Belgian maestro remains the heartbeat of City's midfield. His recent winning goal against Wolves not only showcased his clutch ability but also underlined his importance in tight matches. De Bruyne's vision, passing range, and set-piece threat make him a constant danger. Southampton will need to close him down early to avoid being picked apart. 2. Erling Haaland (Manchester City)
With the Golden Boot race still alive, Haaland's physical presence and clinical finishing are a nightmare for any defense. Southampton's back three will have their hands full trying to contain the Norwegian forward, who can turn a game in seconds. 3. Kamaldeen Sulemana (Southampton)
One of the few bright sparks in a struggling Saints side, Sulemana offers pace, trickery, and unpredictability in the final third. Against a side like City, who often push high, his ability to exploit space on the counter could be Southampton's best hope of a breakthrough. 4. Bernardo Silva (Manchester City)
Silva's work rate and intelligence often go under the radar, but his ability to transition quickly from defense to attack makes him crucial in big games. Expect him to drift between the lines, dragging defenders out of position and creating room for others. 5. Paul Onuachu (Southampton)
Standing at 6'7″, Onuachu brings a unique aerial threat. If Southampton can deliver quality into the box, he could be a handful for City's backline, especially during set pieces and long balls. His hold-up play may also relieve pressure and allow the Saints to gain territory. 6. Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City)
The Croatian defender has grown into his role and could be key in dealing with Southampton's counterattacks. Gvardiol's speed, strength, and positional awareness could be tested by Sulemana and Onuachu, making him one to watch in the backline. Manchester CitySouthampton

Chelsea held 0-0 by Palace as Forest opens with a win in the Premier League

Chelsea was held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday in the team's first competitive match as the club world champion. A month after stunning Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final, Chelsea toiled in its league opener at Stamford Bridge after a short preseason because of its exertions in the United States. Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, hit the ground running with a 3-1 win over Brentford, with striker Chris Wood — the team's top scorer last season with 20 goals — netting twice in the first half either side of a goal on debut by Dan Ndoye. Later, Manchester United hosts Arsenal in the marquee match of the opening round, which has already seen wins for likely title contenders Liverpool and Manchester City. Eze's farewell? Eberechi Eze has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham so the England midfielder might have been making his final appearance for Palace. He almost marked it with a goal. In the 13th minute, Eze smashed a direct free kick past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from the edge of the area but the goal was ruled out after a video review spotted an infringement by Palace captain Marc Guehi as he attempted to push aside Chelsea's Moises Caicedo in the defensive wall. The Premier League confirmed Guehi was standing less than one meter (yard) from the wall as the shot was taken, which is not allowed. Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer, stars for Chelsea in the Club World Cup were quiet. The hosts lacked intensity because they've only been back in training for a couple of weeks, while Palace has had a long preseason and was coming off beating Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield last weekend. Hot Wood Chris Wood started quickly last season in the best goalscoring top-flight campaign of his career, and he needed just five minutes to open his account this time round, making the most of a poor clearance at a corner to give Forest the lead against Brentford. Ndoye headed in a second in the 42nd minute and Wood rounded the goalkeeper in first-half stoppage time to stroke in a third. Igor Thiago converted a late penalty for a consolation for Brentford, which has sold star forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United and didn't play Yoane Wissa — a striker linked with a move to Newcastle. Jota tribute All matches on Sunday featured a period of silence before kickoff as a tribute to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, the brothers who were killed in a car crash in Spain last month. Jota was a player for Liverpool at the time. ___ ___

Newcastle complete signing of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa. The Athletic reported on Thursday that the clubs had agreed an upfront fee of £39million ($52.8m) along with a further £5m in harder to achieve add-ons. The former England Under-21 international, who was into the final 24 months of his contract at Villa, did not feature in Saturday's 0-0 draw in the Premier League between the two sides. Advertisement The 24-year-old becomes Newcastle's fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale (loan) and Malick Thiaw. 'I'm delighted to be here,' Ramsey said upon the move being completed. 'It's been a mad two or three days, but I'm really happy to be here and I can 't wait to get started. 'This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really liked me, it didn't take much time to decide. 'His track record of developing players, especially those who have gone on to become internationals here, speaks for itself. 'It was always a tough game playing for Villa against Newcastle — the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that and I'm excited to be on the other end of it now.' Villa, who will compete in this season's Europa League, have sold the midfielder to help the club comply with UEFA's squad cost rules (SCR) and Football Earnings Rule (FER). Newcastle held a dialogue with Villa over a £50m move for the player in January of last year when Bayern Munich also showed interest. The midfielder, however, stayed with Villa, who were were reluctant to sell. Ramsey made 167 senior appearances for Villa since making his league debut in September 2020 as a teenager. Last season, he played 45 games across all competitions and scored one goal and five assists in the league after struggling with injuries. Analysis from Aston Villa correspondent Jacob Tanswell It has been clear throughout the summer that Villa would need to sell a first-team player, owing to profitability and sustainability Rules (PSR) and more pertinently, UEFA's squad cost rules (SCR), which states a club should not be spending above 70 per cent of their overall revenue on player wages. Advertisement Consequently, Villa have known that they have no had much room to manoeuvre, needing to comply with SCR as well as intending to strengthen the squad further. Ramsey represents pure bookable profit and although not a high earner, frees up the wage bill to give Villa opportunities in the market. Had they not been willing to sell Ramsey, it is unlikely, they would have been able to look at any more incomings. As The Athletic reported last month, all parties have grown amenable to the idea of Ramsey departing, even if contract negotiations to protect his market value have rumbled on for half a year. Across 2023 and 2024, he missed a total of 270 days through injury but has recently been on his longest run availability since Unai Emery arrived, yet only scored one goal in 29 Premier League appearances last season. Villa intend to sign a versatile defender and a winger, which can happen if Ramsey, as well as some fringe players, leave. Analysis from Newcastle United correspondent Chris Waugh The most basic reason Newcastle want Ramsey is midfield numbers. Sean Longstaff joined Leeds United last month, meaning Newcastle's senior cohort of midfielders dropped from six to five. Given Eddie Howe usually starts with a three-man engine room and there is the additional demand of Champions League football this season, bringing in a replacement is paramount. Joe Willock is also sidelined with a calf problem, leaving Howe with only four fit senior midfielders. Although Ramsey has had injury issues of his own at Villa Park, particularly with his foot, he is experienced in the Premier League and has also now tasted Champions League football. His athleticism, dynamism and attacking mindset would provide Howe with a fresh option. He would not initially be a certain starter at St James' Park — but few players are when they first join Newcastle under Howe, especially after pre-season has concluded. Advertisement Beyond the initial integration period, Ramsey will definitely be given the opportunity to prove he warrants a starting berth, even if it is difficult to see him usurping any of Joelinton, Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes. Joelinton usually plays as the left-sided No 8, so Ramsey will provide direct competition, though the Brazilian's physicality and tactical flexibility make him an integral member of Howe's first-choice XI. However, given the volume of matches Newcastle will play throughout 2025-26 (and they hope beyond, given repeatedly qualifying for Europe is their stated goal), Ramsey will undoubtedly receive plenty of opportunities to start as Howe rotates. He is also comfortable playing as the left-sided forward, too, so provides an option there, even if Newcastle are already blessed with depth in Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Elanga and even Joelinton.
