USC football countdown to kickoff—Porter Gustin in focus
Position: Linebacker
Years played at USC: 2015-2018
Career highlights: A highly-touted recruit out of high school, Gustin arrived at USC in 2015 and made an immediate impact at linebacker as a true freshman. He would continue to do so for the next four years—although unfortunately, injuries held Gustin back from ever quite living up to his full potential. Despite this, though, he still finished his career in Cardinal and Gold with an impressive 137 total tackles, 21 sacks, and five passes defended.
After USC: Gustin signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft. However, he was released by the team prior to the start of the regular season.
In November of 2019, Gustin signed with the Cleveland Browns practice squad. Later that month, he was promoted to the team's active roster. Gustin would go on to appear in 26 regular season games and two postseason contests with the team between 2019 and 2021. Perhaps the highlight of his career was an interception of legendary Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger during a Wild Card playoff win following the 2020 season.
Gustin's most recent NFL stint came with the Miami Dolphins practice squad in 2022.

Philadelphia Eagles Unveil Unreal Super Bowl LIX Rings That Include Wings
The Philadelphia Eagles unveiled their Super Bowl LIX rings at the team's ring ceremony on Friday night — and they're sharp and large, to say the least. On the top of the ring is Philadelphia's logo with a pair of Super Bowl trophies, representing the franchise's two Super Bowl triumphs: Super Bowl LII (2017 NFL season) and Super Bowl LIX (2024 NFL season). One side of the ring has a player's individual number and last name on top of Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia's home stadium, with their respective signatures also included. Another side of the ring lists the scores of each of the Eagles' four playoff wins. Meanwhile, the ring has wings, with "YOU CAN'T BE GREAT WITHOUT" engraved on the left wing and "THE GREATNESS OF OTHERS" engraved on the right wing. Philadelphia defeated the Green Bay Packers (22-10), Los Angeles Rams (28-22) and NFC East-rival Washington Commanders (55-23) before taking down the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX (40-22), which came two years after the Chiefs beat the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Quarterback and two-time Pro Bowler Jalen Hurts was the MVP of Super Bowl LIX. Elsewhere, superstar running back Saquon Barkley, who spent the first six years of his career with the NFC East-rival New York Giants, rushed for an NFL-high 2,005 yards on a career-high 5.8 yards per carry in the regular season, becoming the ninth player in NFL history to post 2,000 rushing yards in a single season. Barkley then set the NFL record for combined rushing yards in a single season (regular season plus postseason), finishing with 2,504 yards on the ground. On the other side of the ball, linebacker Zack Baun totaled 151 combined tackles and five forced fumbles, while fellow linebacker Nakobe Dean totaled 128 combined tackles. Defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson had a team-high six interceptions, while rookie defensive back Cooper DeJean had a pick-six in Super Bowl LIX. In total, the Eagles were seventh in the NFL with 27.2 points and eighth with 367.2 total yards per game. Defensively, they were first with 278.4 total yards surrendered and second with 17.8 points surrendered per game. Philadelphia had six players earn Pro Bowl honors: Barkley, Baun, defensive tackle Jalen Carter, guard Landon Dickerson, offensive tackle Lane Johnson and center Cam Jurgens. Nick Saban's Coaching Future Receives Major NFL Update
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Nick Saban is one of the best head coaches in football history. His success at the college level, especially with the Alabama Crimson Tide, was nothing short of amazing. After taking a full season off from coaching, rumors have started circulating about Saban's future. Could he consider making a comeback to coaching? He enjoyed working in the media during his off year, but he's still capable of being an elite level head coach. With that in mind, questions have started coming up about where Saban could coach if he did decide to open up to a return to the sideline. There are only a few teams across the country who would have no interest in the coaching legend. Paul Finebaum, one of the most notable reports in college football, has now weighed in on Saban's future. He doesn't see a return to the college game for Saban. "I think it's impossible to believe he will come back to college football," Finebaum said. "Nick Saban walked away two years ago for a specific reason. He had had enough of it. I think if Saban ever returned to working in sports, it would be to the NFL. That could happen; I don't think it will. I think mostly this was a non-starter [on Monday]. " Saban has coached two seasons in the NFL throughout his career. Both of those years came with the Miami Dolphins. He compiled a 15-17 record during the 2005 and 2006 seasons with the Dolphins. He won seven total college football national championships as well. Fans would love to see Saban coaching again. A return to college doesn't seem likely with his distaste for the NIL and transfer portal changes, but the NFL could be an option. More than likely, the scenario of Saban returning isn't going to become a reality. Finebaum is likely correct with his opinion on the matter. Cowboys Standouts Named Among NFL's Top Homegrown Duos
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. While they have made significant upgrades through trades and free agency over the years, the Dallas Cowboys have also done a fine job creating talent in-house. Ahead of the 2025 season, two key members of the roster received high praise amid their emergence as star-level talents. Back in 2020, luck fell the Cowboys' way when wide receiver CeeDee Lamb slid in the draft. Dallas managed to nab him at pick No. 17, and since then, he's blossomed into a core piece for the franchise. Lamb has racked up at least 1,000 yards in each of the last four seasons and landed All-Pro honors in 2023 after leading the league in receptions (135). Fast forward to 2021, and the Cowboys secured a pillar for the other side of the ball. Following a strong college career at Penn State, Dallas drafted Micah Parsons 12th overall. He was brought in to raise the Cowboys' floor on defense, but has done so much more than that. Parsons has developed into one of the league's top defensive stars, finishing top three in Defensive Player of the Year voting three times in four seasons. More Photo byAlso read: Former Champion Sets High Bar For New-Look Cowboys Offense Ahead of training camp, Nick Shook ranked the top homegrown duos in football right now. Parsons and Lamb made an appearance on this list, securing the No. 1 spot. "Parsons entered the NFL from Penn State with plenty of deserved attention, but even the most avid Nittany Lions supporters likely didn't expect him to be this good at the next level. The true transformation into a game-wrecking pass rusher occurred once the Cowboys committed to playing him on the ball, sacrificing his sideline-to-sideline range in favor of sending him on repeated quarterback hunts," Shook wrote. "Lamb has been a star since his days at Oklahoma, yet he remained available until the middle of the 2020 NFL Draft's first round. Dallas happily scooped him up at No. 17 overall and immediately bestowed great expectations upon him by handing him the franchise's venerated No. 88 jersey. He's done nothing but meet those expectations, even when the circumstances surrounding him haven't been ideal." Last year, Dallas inked Lamb to a four-year extension worth $136 million. Parsons is now due for a new contract, and based on his production and impact, could end up landing a record-setting deal on par with that of Pittsburgh Steelers star TJ Watt. Following a down year in 2024, Lamb and Parsons will attempt to help the Cowboys return to prominence in the NFC this season. For more Dallas Cowboys and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
