Crew sign Daniel Gazdag to extension through 2027

Reuters07-05-2025
May 7 - The Columbus Crew signed midfielder Daniel Gazdag to a contract extension through 2027 on Wednesday.
The deal includes an option for 2028 for the 29-year-old Designated Player from Hungary.
The Crew acquired Gazdag from the Philadelphia Union last month in a cash exchange worth up to $4.5 million.
"We are pleased to reach this agreement with Daniel and secure his long-term future with the club," said general manager Issa Tall. "Since he arrived in Columbus last month, we have seen first-hand Daniel's talents as a player and his great presence in the locker room, and we are thrilled that he will remain a part of our Club for years to come."
He has featured in three MLS matches (two starts) since joining Columbus but has yet to dent the score sheet.
"I am very happy to have signed a new contract with the Crew," Gazdag said. "As my family and I settle into our new home, I can fully focus on what I am here for, which is to win games and titles with the Crew!"
Gazdag departed Philadelphia as the club's all-time leading scorer with 72 goals in 161 appearances across all competitions from 2021-25. He made the MLS Best XI in 2022.

Royals use 9 pitchers to shut out Braves in 10-inning win

July 30 - Salvador Perez lashed a walk-off single in the 10th inning, and nine Kansas City pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Kansas City Royals blanked the visiting Atlanta Braves 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Scoreless after 9 1/2 innings in a day of very little baserunning and lots of light contact, pinch runner MJ Melendez was placed on second base to start the bottom of the 10th -- the first time a Royals baserunner reached scoring position. Perez then lined an 0-1 slider to right center off Daysbel Hernandez (4-2), just the Royals' third hit, for his 10th career walk-off winner to lift them to their third straight series win. Reliever Sam Long (1-2) escaped a first-and-third, no-out jam in the 10th with two strikeouts and a lineout. In a bullpen game, reliever Angel Zerpa served as the opener and tossed one-plus inning, allowing just a single. The bullpen finished with 10 strikeouts and a walk in the club's ninth shutout. Making his third straight start since being inserted into the Atlanta rotation this month, Kansas City area native Joey Wentz was outstanding over 6 2/3 innings. The left-hander allowed only a leadoff single to Maikel Garcia and three walks as the Royals never put a runner in scoring position against him. He posted season highs with seven strikeouts and 95 pitches. The Braves' Drake Baldwin produced a pinch-hit single and extended his on-base streak to 11 games as Atlanta fell to 2-9 in the past 11 games. With All-Star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. (right Achilles inflammation) sent to the 10-day injured list after Tuesday's 9-6 loss to the Royals, Eli White replaced the 2023 National League MVP and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, including one in the 10th. After combining for 32 runs in the first two matchups, the teams' bats were quiet as both Wentz and the home team's bullpen were impressive in the getaway game. Wentz went about his business working ahead of Kansas City batters and retired eight straight after Garcia's hit. In the sixth, the visitors generated the rubber game's first offensive threat when Nick Allen and Jurickson Profar opened with singles, but reliever Hunter Harvey buckled down and put away Matt Olson, Austin Riley and Michael Harris II. --Field Level Media

Aaron Rodgers beats back Mike Tomlin critics

July 30 - Mike Tomlin might stop short of embracing his critics, but the Pittsburgh Steelers' coach has said the unsolicited assessments of his performance come with the territory in his profession. New Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has other ideas about slinging arrows at Tomlin. "Mike T is the man. Any hate, disrespect and the ilk is complete and utter bullshit," Rodgers said Wednesday in a live interview at training camp with the visiting "Pat McAfee Show." "Mike T is the man. From Day 1 that we talked on the phone in the offseason, I was never talking to a head coach. I was talking to a friend. I respected the hell out of that. The way that he leads the room, the way that he talks in the team meeting, the way he is in practice. The surprise has been, just, what a great dude he is. What a great leader he is, on top of what I already expected, which was already high based on what I thought from afar, but being able to see it in person is incredible." Rodgers took his time coming to terms with the Steelers after two painful seasons with the Jets. He tore his Achilles on the opening series of his tenure with the team in 2023 and the redemption tour never left the runway in 2024 after a slow start that led to New York firing head coach Robert Saleh. Rodgers was released by the Jets, who signed former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields to start this season. Tomlin told McAfee on Wednesday there was no hesitation in signing Rodgers after their initial conversation proved they were in alignment on their goals and mission. "He's here and here in a mindset that's aligned with us. He's here and here to win a world championship for this group," Tomlin said. Rodgers won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers in 2010, beating Tomlin and the Steelers for his only Lombardi Trophy. --Field Level Media
