Clock ticking on Joseph Woll to rediscover top form for Maple Leafs in NHL playoffs

New York Times11-05-2025

SUNRISE, Fla. — Two years, nearly to the day, before Game 3 against the Florida Panthers, Sheldon Keefe turned to a young goalie to keep the Toronto Maple Leafs' season alive.
The then-Leafs coach tapped Joseph Woll instead of the veteran Matt Murray, even after Woll had missed training camp with injury and only played seven regular-season games.

Keefe believed in Woll's abilities in a desperate time.
'(Woll) is well above what we had anticipated in terms of the timeline,' Keefe said on May 10, 2023. Woll had just stopped 24 of 25 shots in a Game 4 win against the Panthers. 'For him to play the way that he has and the way that he did in the last regular-season game against Tampa, and to play the way that he has when he has come through the net here in the playoffs, is why we had no question that he would be able to go today. He did a tremendous job.'
Now, two years later, still in South Florida, the Leafs are waiting for that version of Woll to emerge in the playoffs.
The five goals on 36 shots he allowed in the Leafs' 5-4 Game 3 loss to the Panthers weren't all on Woll alone. They remain up 2-1 in the series against the defending Stanley Cup champions, but the Leafs will still be in a difficult spot to close out the series unless Woll rediscovers his postseason form.
After coming in relief for Anthony Stolarz in Game 1, Woll has allowed 11 goals on 84 shots. That's good for an .869 save percentage — 18th out of 20 goalies who have made a start through this postseason.
The Joseph Woll the Leafs are getting right now feels far away from the Woll who kept the Leafs' 2022-23 season alive and the Woll who stopped 49 of 51 shots in Game 5 and Game 6 last year with the Leafs on life support.
The Leafs need that Woll: Clinical. Dynamic in the net. And, maybe, even more desperate?
Because after the worst playoff performance of his career, small sample acknowledged, Woll and Berube were surprisingly upbeat about what transpired in goal.
'I thought he was really good,' Berube said of Woll. 'I don't love the fourth goal, but other than that, I thought he was solid.'
Seeing the glass as half full won't lose the Leafs this series, but what they like about Stolarz is how blunt and aggressive he can be. It has driven the Leafs at times this season, on and off the ice.

Now wouldn't be the worst time for Woll to adopt a little more of that aggression and desperation from his goalie partner.
When Woll entered over the last two playoffs, the stake had already been driven close to the Leafs' heart. The outcome of the series wasn't dependent on him alone.
Now?
This is different. He plays a starring role. There's pressure that comes with that, the likes of which Woll has never faced before.
How Woll responds to that pressure, with the likelihood of Stolarz returning seemingly low, could partly dictate the Leafs' fortunes in this series.
There is a race now between Woll and Sergei Bobrovsky to find their old playoff forms and steal a game in the series. In a back-and-forth matchup that is this high scoring (who had 25 goals over three games on their bingo card?), one outlandishly good goaltending performance could swing the momentum in one team's favour for good.
Woll needs to step into the spotlight.
'I did the same things I always do. We just came out on the wrong side,' Woll said of his Game 3 performance.
Behind the scenes, Woll prepares relentlessly. He was one of the last Leafs to leave the Panthers' practice facility after Friday's morning skate, getting his body in a good place while most of his teammates boarded buses back to the team hotel. He can't be faulted for not being ready.
Small dips in his game can be corrected. His puck play has looked, at best, indecisive. Poor puck play allows the Panthers more time to get into better positions in the offensive zone.
'It's difficult,' Berube said. 'A lot of those rims, they're up, eh? They're not on the ice. And that's designed. If (the Panthers) can get a good lick on it, they're going to put it on a glass. It's pretty tough for him to come out and play those. So, he did get to a lot of them. They're coming hard, we know that. He's going to have to move it quick, make a decision quick, and move it. That's the bottom line.'

It's a matter of split seconds, but his timing hasn't been as strong as it was during the regular season. At his best, Woll's athleticism allows him to make quick saves. But Jonah Gadjovich's second-period goal — the 'fourth goal' Berube mentioned — seemed to move in slow motion, from beyond the faceoff dot and past Woll.

Woll has been put in a tough spot. He might have entered this series thinking he would not play. He's had to flip the switch quickly.
'It's very, very tough,' Max Pacioretty said of Woll being thrust into the series with little notice. 'He's done a really good job of handling it. He's made a lot of really key saves for us. So, he's handled it extremely well, and I've made a point of talking about how hard he works, and I think that's a big reason why he's having success.'
Yet he's also been in this situation before. That's what makes his play in Game 3 so confounding.
The Leafs will continue to roll with Woll, even if he stumbles again in Game 4. Murray has played two NHL games this season, both before 2025, and Dennis Hildeby would like to forget four of his six NHL starts this season. If the Leafs turned to either of them, calling it a 'Hail Mary' might be underselling it.
The likelihood of Stolarz returning in this series also remains low.
And so it's on Woll, armed with a recently signed three-year contract extension that will make him the highest-paid Leafs goalie next season, to push momentum back into the Leafs' favour. He's done it before, including through the regular season.
Woll believes he can do it again.
For the Leafs to win this series, he might have to.
'Some of the games (this season) haven't exactly been the best outcomes and haven't gone the way I wanted,' Woll said in April. 'I think I've learned some very good lessons in those as well, again, I needed to learn and ingrain.'

MLB acquires stake in Jomboy Media to expand digital presence

NEW YORK — Major League Baseball has agreed on a strategic partnership with Jomboy Media and will acquire a stake in the company. The two sides announced the deal on Tuesday. Jomboy Media will be used across MLB's digital channels. MLB will also help grow Jomboy Media's other shows, including 'Talkin' Baseball,' 'Talkin' Yanks,' and 'The Warehouse Games.' Both sides are also expected to collaborate on IP growth and ad opportunities around MLB's key events, including the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. According to the release, Jomboy Media set revenue and profitability records last year, and had more than 93 million engagements on social media. Jomboy Media was founded by Jimmy 'Jomboy' O'Brien and Jake Storiale in 2017. 'We have long admired the passionate fandom of Jimmy O'Brien and his unique ability to connect with baseball fans,' Noah Garden, MLB deputy commissioner, business and media, said in a statement. 'This partnership will ensure that Jomboy Media will have the resources and access to MLB intellectual property necessary to help it continue to grow. We are looking forward to bringing baseball fans more entertaining content to help further expand baseball's online presence and deeper the connection between our sport and its fans.' Jomboy Media's key property is 'The Warehouse Games,' a league modeled after classic backyard games. The series has nearly 400 million all-time views. 'I continue to be amazed by what our community enables us to do through their endless support. When we started talking about baseball on the internet, it was just a fun hobby. Our community is the reason we've been able to turn this from 'just a hobby,' into something bigger than we ever could've imagined,' O'Brien said in a statement. 'Partnering with MLB marks a huge moment for Jomboy Media, and through this partnership, we'll be able to give back to our community with storytelling that's deeper than ever before.' ___ AP MLB:

Why World Cup 2026 host cities are taking a light approach to the year-out hype

A year from now, the most expansive World Cup in history will kick off on North American soil, but you might not know it from walking around through any of the 11 U.S. host cities. Any soccer-themed billboards or Instagram advertising splashes are conspicuously absent. That the World Cup is coming is no secret, but the visible signs that we're at a 12-month countdown are few and far between. Advertisement By the time the 48 qualified teams begin their campaigns in the U.S., Mexico and Canada in 2026, the chances are that this will be the most hyped sporting event North America has ever seen. Yet despite the anticipation from soccer fans, the U.S. side has remained relatively hushed so far. So why hasn't there been more of a push? And why did the year-out marker pass by this week with so little domestic fanfare? 'It is kind of like the Club World Cup. We did not see a lot of action around it either,' Dave Wakeman of Wakeman Consulting, a strategy firm focused on sports, told The Athletic. There are several reasons U.S. host cities have not moved faster. For starters, many key details are still up in the air. Host cities do not know which matches they'll stage, the official draw isn't until December and unless you are eyeing premium hospitality packages that cost thousands of dollars, tickets for the general public aren't even on sale yet. With no significant financial help from FIFA, host cities are also juggling the responsibility of finding funds they need to use for promoting the event, multiple industry insiders told The Athletic. Add in the fact that FIFA traditionally launches its own major marketing push just six to nine months before the tournament, the current silence starts to make more sense. Still, for an event of this scale, the absence of orchestrated buzz could be seen as risky. 'Think of it like the launching of a blockbuster movie,' Wakeman said. 'You want to have an action plan that builds 90-180 days out. But you need to get going now because people have to plan. You are counting on people coming from around the world, but in the current environment you have to rely on American tourists more than usual.' But in most cases, the slow rollout appears to be a calculated move. Unlike most countries, the U.S. is saturated with major sporting events year-round, making it harder for any single tournament—even the World Cup—to dominate the spotlight. At least that's the reason one host city, San Francisco, is making sure it is using its resources efficiently. 'A year is actually a very short time before such a big event,' Zaileen Janmohamed, the president and CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee (BAHC), told The Athletic during the World Cup Host City event in New York on Monday. 'But we have a Super Bowl right before the World Cup, so we're making sure that we're prioritizing the right decisions at the right time. First we've got America's biggest game and then we have the world's biggest tournament.' Advertisement Starting Wednesday, many host cities will kick off their 'One Year Out' activations, following San Francisco's lead. In Seattle, the countdown clock will be unveiled at the base of the Space Needle during a fan celebration featuring local soccer legends and ambassadors to drum up excitement. Then on Sunday, which is exactly one year before Seattle hosts its first World Cup match, the host committee will team up with Seattle Reign and the Seattle Sounders to attempt a Guinness World Record for world's largest soccer clinic. In Houston, the host committee will host an exclusive event with city officials and potential donors, featuring former USMNT captain Carlos Bocanegra. In Kansas City, the chair of the host committee board will throw out the first pitch at Wednesday night's game between the Royals and New York Yankees to mark the one-year countdown. Despite being thoughtful about a big marketing push later in 2026, San Francisco is also planning on kicking off the marketing campaign with a plaque unveiling at the stadium with the city of Santa Clara on Wednesday, a speaking event with some of the biggest names in soccer from the Bay Area. It includes Bruce Arena, the coach of the San Jose Earthquakes, Brady Stewart of Bay FC and former USWNT legend and one of the owners of Bay FC, Aly Wagner, bringing together the soccer community in the Bay Area and will host a free and open clinic and a community festival in San Jose on Saturday for the public. Meanwhile, in Canada and Mexico, some of their host cities are already pitching things with posters revealed in public spaces to hype soccer fans. A post shared by FWC26Vancouver (@fwc26vancouver) But perhaps one of the most bizarre ways to kick off the World Cup promotions happened a few weeks ago in New York. For the first time ever, a professional soccer freestyler, Frankie Flo, juggled and dribbled a soccer ball through the Lincoln Tunnel, which connects New Jersey and New York, to spotlight 'the unifying power of sport and elevate community spirit,' according to the PR agency that promoted the event. Advertisement 'The Lincoln Tunnel Challenge 5K is a perfect reflection of what FIFA World Cup 26 NYNJ is all about, connecting the two great states of NY and NJ, and the entire region through athleticism, passion, and community spirit,' it read. Of all the ways to hype the biggest sporting event in history, a freestyling influencer dribbling a ball through a fume-choked tunnel every New Yorker despises, was an interesting one. It may have been an odd way to build buzz around the World Cup, but for organizers even a weird stunt like this signals a shift from vague hype to decisions and the beginning of the final push. 'How does it feel to be one year out? Does it make it more real? Of course!' Janmohamed explained. 'The good news is that the decisions start to get made instead of being in this phase where you're planning and thinking. We now have to make a decision, and that decision allows us to make other decisions. Understanding that the World Cup is coming next year, and I think it's actually going to be a really, really great tournament.'

Steelers star linebacker TJ Watt skips the start of mandatory minicamp

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aaron Rodgers might be ready to take the practice field for the Pittsburgh Steelers. T.J. Watt is not. The star outside linebacker skipped the start of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. Watt likely is eyeing a new deal as he enters the final year of his current contract. The seven-time Pro Bowler and 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year signed a four-year extension in September 2021 that was scheduled to pay him $112 million and made him the highest-paid defender in the league at the time. That number has been eclipsed several times over the last four years, including by Cleveland star Myles Garrett, who signed a deal in March that made him the most well-compensated non-quarterback in the league at $40 million a season. The decision to skip minicamp is a change from Watt's approach in 2021, when he did a 'hold in' during both minicamp and training camp before agreeing to a contract on the eve of the regular season. 'We expect him back at some point,' defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said Tuesday. 'We don't get caught up (in that) ... He's going to be in good shape (whenever he arrives).' Watt tied an NFL record by registering 22 1/2 sacks after signing the extension in 2021. He led the league in sacks again in 2023, though that number dipped to 11 1/2 last season, Watt's fewest in a year in which he didn't miss extended time because of injury since he was a rookie in 2017. Austin believes Watt's absence will provide opportunities for younger players like third-year outside linebacker Nick Herbig and rookie Jack Sawyer. Maybe, but neither has Watt's game-changing resume. Watt, who turns 31 in October, is the linchpin of a defense that has helped keep the Steelers in contention despite heavy churn at quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement in January 2022. Rodgers will get his shot after agreeing to a one-year deal last week. The four-time NFL MVP was at the team facility on Tuesday and is expected to be on the field when afternoon practice begins. ___ AP NFL:
