Brits ditch birthday celebrations because of dieting

A recent survey has discovered that half of health-conscious Britons are skipping social events to stick to a diet. The study, involving 2,000 adults, discovered that occasions such as birthday dinners and takeaway nights are frequently skipped.
Four out of ten have a hankering for ice cream in the summer months, and a quarter wish they could indulge more in weekend brunches.
It appears that younger individuals are more inclined to turn down invitations centred around food compared to older generations.
The research indicated that a significant number of Millennials and Gen Zers have previously passed up on social gatherings due to their devotion to healthy eating habits.
Nevertheless, seven out of ten participants said that skipping social occasions was the most challenging aspect of maintaining their diet, suggesting that a balanced diet should not mean giving up their favourite food and drinks.
The study was conducted on behalf of Arla LactoFREE, which has recently teamed up with Bompas and Parr to introduce the Sky Shakes pop-up, an endeavour to show that lactose-free options can still be delicious.
Strategic brand manager for Arla LactoFREE, Laura Butler, commented: "Wellness no longer has to mean going without."
She explained: "It's important to find food and drink options which can be enjoyed no matter what your dietary requirements are, without having to miss out on the taste and flavour.
"While it's important to many people to eat well, they also want food which feels exciting and worth sharing, which is what we hoped to deliver with the sky themed shakes made using lactose free milk and cream and crafted to be flavoursome.
"Certain foods and drinks become a part of our routine and habits, be it a tea and biscuit break or an evening snack on the sofa, it's hard to stop these altogether so it's important to find alternatives."
The study revealed that indulgent snacks are difficult to abandon due to their taste and the comfort they provide.
Regarding nutritious eating, half of those surveyed believe it involves striking a balance between what they relish and what they perceive they 'ought' to be eating.
As a result, most respondents stressed the significance of healthy options still delivering that treat-like experience. Visual appeal also matters, especially amongst younger demographics.
A staggering 52 percent of Millennials and 47 percent of Gen Z admitted they're more likely to buy food or drink simply because it appears 'Instagram worthy'.
Nevertheless, people would be more inclined to regard healthy food or drink as an indulgence rather than a burden if it delivers a luxurious taste, bursts with flavour, and offers reassurance.
Laura Butler remarked: "Finding food and drink which can be enjoyed no matter what your dietary requirements are, without having to miss out of the taste and flavour, shouldn't mean having to compromise.
"Everyone deserves to enjoy things which boost their moods and enable them to share the fun with others, from birthday meals to ice creams and milkshakes on a hot day."

Boots' budget-friendly HABI skincare has been tested on teen skin and costs under £7.50

Habi is a brand built on cultivating good habits, with eight simple but effective products that have been tested on teen skin It feels like over the years, skincare routines have grown more and more expensive, often requiring a science degree to decipher the inkey list. But Boots has come to the rescue with a new brand that proves looking after your skin doesn't have to break the bank, or have you turning to ChatGPT to work out how to use it. Habi is a high-performing, low-cost skincare line that's putting the fun and simplicity back into skincare. After launching a range of health supplements earlier this year, Habi - a brand built on cultivating good habits - took the next step into skincare earlier this month. I knew it was going to be an affordable brand, but I must admit I was stunned when I saw the price list. Every single item in the collection priced at £7.50 or under, it undercuts even Boots' own affordable No7 Good Intent line (£15 and under) and competes with the likes of Byoma and Bubble for Gen Z-friendly, budget-conscious beauty. The packaging is bold and playful, the formulations are vegan, cruelty-free and dermatologically tested, and the actives inside, from niacinamide to triple ceramides, are the kind of ingredients usually found in much more premium lines. I've tried five of the eight products in the Habi skincare range, and here's the full verdict. Pros: Affordable with every product £7.50 or less Well-formulated featuring trusted active ingredients Vegan, cruelty-free, and dermatologically tested - including on teenage skin Aesthetic packaging and textures Layer well and are refreshingly simple Cons: Jelly cleanser underperformed for me personally SPF pump is finicky and didn't dispense consistently HABI Clean Slate Jelly Cleanser - £7 For those into sensory skincare, this jelly cleanser delivers. It's got a light, bouncy texture that's satisfying to massage in, and contains soothing ingredients like Green Tea Leaf Water and Allantoin. It reminds me a lot of the Byoma Creamy Jelly Cleanser, which costs £9.99, and also harnesses the power of green tea extracts. While the Habi formula is great as a morning or second cleanse, it didn't fully remove my makeup and did sting a little around the eyes, so I'd opt for Habi's Moisture Melt cleansing balm next time for a bit more oomph. That said, it's already earned some five star reviews from fans, with one commenting: 'This felt very gentle on the skin and removed make up residue leaving my skin feeling nice and fresh.' However, one did leave a one-star rating, noting that they had experienced 'sensitive skin' after using the product. Another shopper said: 'This cleanser is so good. Once used it doesn't leave your skin feeling tight and dried out. It also has no scent which can make it usable for sensitive prone skin. The packaging is so sleek and easy and effective to use.' HABI Spritz Saviour Face Mist - £6.50 Perfect for sensitive skin, this lightweight mist contains a triple ceramide complex and anti-irritant allantoin. It feels really refreshing on the skin, and can be used under or over makeup, making it a great summer skincare staple for at home or on the go. 'It is very effective as it gives my skin a beautiful refresh,' another shopper agreed. 'Also the packaging is so aesthetically pleasing. The product is lightweight on my skin which makes it not overstimulating.' Some people disliked that it was unfragranced, commenting: 'The scent isn't the most appealing it's not really got a scent, just sort of smells like the container.' For those looking for fragranced mists, I really like the Mario Badescu range. Their Spritz. Mist. Glow. set, worth £34.50, is currently £20.50 and gets shoppers three different sprays. One is a cooling Aloe, Cucumber, and Green Tea to cool and quench skin, while Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater revives dehydrated skin. Finally, there's the Aloe, Chamomile, and Lavender mist for delivering calm, balanced and bright skin. HABI Hydra Glow Hydrating Serum - £6.50 Containing niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, this is a thick serum that absorbs quickly without feeling heavy on the skin. It delivers exactly what it promises - glow and hydration, leaving the skin feeling bouncy and plump while over time, smoothing the appearance of skin texture. Skincare enthusiasts have already hailed it their 'new favourite serum'. They added: 'My skin just after a few days is hydrated and looks more fresh. It's not scented which is nice and the packaging is cute. I use this under my No7 moisturiser.' Another added: 'Really impressed with this serum. It feels super lightweight on the skin and soaks in quickly. My face feels more hydrated and looks a bit more glowy after just a few uses. Love that it has niacinamide and hyaluronic acid – perfect for daily use without feeling heavy or sticky.' HABI Hydra Boost Hydrating Moisturiser - £7 I love the dispenser for this moisturiser, which is packed with triple ceramide complex and squalane. It's got a rich and creamy consistency with an almost gel-like texture that doesn't overwhelm pores. It feels way more luxurious than its £7 price tag, and has been tested on teen skin, so you can rest assured that it's not overloaded with unnecessary ingredients that will break you out or damage the skin barrier. If I had to compare it to a higher end product, I'd be inclined to pit it against Drunk Elephant's Protini Polypeptide Cream, which has a similar dispenser and texture - though the ingredients and actives vary. The Habi Hydra Boost is a great choice for dry skin, but for those with oilier complexions, the Habi Moisture Magic Water Moisturiser, starring Green Tea Leaf Water and Niacinamide, might be a better option. HABI Sunny Shield SPF 40 - £7 Finally, there's the Sunny Shield SPF, had a shaky start with an awkward pump that delivered an inconsistent amount of product, but it redeemed itself fast. Applying it to the skin, I thought I'd applied too much but all at once it seems to sink in and the glow it leaves behind is unreal. Plus the slightly tacky finish makes it a brilliant makeup primer. It may not be for those who prefer a matte finish on no-makeup days. Overall, Habi is a really exciting new addition to Boots' shelves. It takes the term budget skincare to a whole new level. They're even on three for two and Advantage Card holders can get 10% off. That means shoppers could essentially get all eight products in the range - the others being spot stickers, the cleansing balm and an alternative moisturiser - plus an additional product for £35.10 (or less than £4 each). While not every product is for me, some will definitely find their way into my rotation and I would happily purchase products in this range for my tween niece.

Comedian reveals 'horrendous' side effect of weight loss jab Mounjaro 'no one mentions' - and the extreme way he covers it up

A comedian has revealed a lesser-known 'horrendous' side effect of the weight loss jab Mounjaro - and he's resorted to desperate measures to cover it up. Appearing on the Have A Word podcast, comedian Will Thompson described his experience with the GLP-1 medication, which helps people lose weight by reducing appetite. But as thousands of Britons turn to the jabs to help them slim down, here's been a steady stream of side effects being shared and discussed by the jabber community. These typically include chronic constipation, hair loss, loss of libido and extreme bloating. But there's one 'horrendous' side effect Will said he never sees mentioned. 'The one that no one really mentions is the burps are horrendous,' the comedian said. 'I've done farts to cover up some of the burps I've done.' These are known as 'sulphur burps', and are typically characterised by an unpleasant rotten egg smell. They occur due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas, which can be a byproduct of digestion or the result of an underlying gastrointestinal issue. Mounjaro keeps you feeling full by slowing down how quickly food is digested, which could be the cause of this unpleasant side effect. Discussing his decision to take the weight loss drug, Will said it is 'fully cheating and I don't give a f***'. He said: 'Because people tell you that, they're like 'no, its not hard work, you're cheating'. 'But I'm not an athlete, I'm not training for anything, I just can't be arsed. 'I could not stop eating badly.' The comedian said the biggest impact of Mounjaro is the lack of 'food noise'. Will said: 'How I described it was Twixes don't speak to me anymore. It's f***ing great. 'You know when you're in a garage and you see all the sweets. Now you show me and I'm just not bothered. 'Don't get me wrong there's side effects to doing it.'

The food ‘moments' dieters find the hardest to skip – with half just miss comfort eating after a bad day

Half of health-conscious eaters claim they've had to miss out on social occasions as they try to stick to their dietary rules. A poll of 2,000 adults found the food 'moments' people find hard to skip, however, include birthday meals (39 per cent) and takeaway nights (34 per cent). 1 Some 37 per cent long to eat ice cream in the summer and 24 per cent miss brunches in cafes. And 42 per cent simply miss being able to comfort eat after a bad day. But it's the younger generations who are most likely to say no to social events involving food, with 65 per cent of Millennials and 61 per cent of Gen Z turning a gathering down in the past as they try to stick to healthy eating. Despite this, 87 per cent of all adults believe eating well shouldn't mean having to go without their favourite foods and drinks, while 71 per cent said this is the hardest part of trying to eat healthily. And 32 per cent claimed it's important to them when choosing a treat that it's something they can enjoy socially. The research was commissioned by Arla LactoFREE which recently launched a Sky Shakes pop-up in collaboration with experiential food pioneers Bompas & Parr, aiming to show that a lactose-free diet doesn't have to mean compromising on taste. Laura Butler, strategic brand manager for the brand, said: ' Wellness no longer has to mean going without. 'It's important to find food and drink options which can be enjoyed no matter what your dietary requirements are, without having to miss out on the taste and flavour. 'While it's important to many people to eat well, they also want food which feels exciting and worth sharing, which is what we hoped to deliver with the sky themed shakes made using lactose free milk and cream and crafted to be flavoursome. 'Certain foods and drinks become a part of our routine and habits, be it a tea and biscuit break or an evening snack on the sofa, it's hard to stop these altogether so it's important to find alternatives.' Tips to feel more full WITHOUT eating more The research also found treats are hard to live without because people miss the taste (73 per cent), the comfort factor (56 per cent) and simply that they're part of their routine (33 per cent). Others said the fact some foods and drinks feel like a reward (33 per cent), are easy and convenient (41 per cent) and are enjoyed socially (26 per cent) make them tricky to give up. When it comes to eating well, 49 per cent feel it's a balance between what they enjoy, and what they feel they 'should' be eating. As a result, 67 per cent of those polled via OnePoll said it's important for a healthy swap to still feel like a treat. Looks matter too, especially for younger generations, as 52 per cent of Millennials and 47 per cent of Gen Z admitted they're more likely to buy a food or drink purely based on it being 'Instagram worthy'. But people would be more inclined to see a healthy food or drink as a treat rather than a chore, if it tastes indulgent (51 per cent), is full of flavour (44 per cent) and feels comforting (38 per cent). Laura Butler added: 'Finding food and drink which can be enjoyed no matter what your dietary requirements are, without having to miss out of the taste and flavour, shouldn't mean having to compromise. 'Everyone deserves to enjoy things which boost their moods and enable them to share the fun with others, from birthday meals to ice creams and milkshakes on a hot day.'
