Neighbours legend & Aussie pop star reveals dream of singing at Eurovision

Scottish Sun15-05-2025

Delta Goodrem has almost done it all – with a string of Top Ten hits and worldwide sell-out concerts under her belt.
But the Aussie singer says there is still one big thing to tick off her bucket list.

Sitting down with our Jack backstage at the Hackney Empire in East London, before one of her two live shows at the venue this week, she reveals: 'Of course I would do Eurovision. I love it!'
Delta says she was thrilled when Australia was allowed into the contest in 2015, adding: 'I'm obsessed. I flew into London and watched some of the semi-finals.
'I loved Scott Mills and Rylan's commentary. I love the creativity of it all.
'You discover some amazing talents.' And she says of this year's UK entry: 'Remember Monday are so cute and gorgeous.
'I love their harmonies. They are so talented.
'And I've got my thoughts on what I would do if I was competing, for sure.'
As for Delta's own concerts, she wears a ballgown to play dark and moody songs on a piano, before jumping about in a sparkling mini-dress and being showered in confetti.
She says: 'I dance and party with everyone when I am on stage, but I also love the drama.'
Delta's UK shows have celebrated her 2004 record, Mistaken Identity.
'I love Hobnobs'
It spawned two UK Top Tens — Out Of The Blue and Almost Here.
Eurovision legends look unrecognisable as they go backstage at contest - can you tell who they are-
For the latter, she was joined on stage in Hackney by pal Calum Scott.
It was the first time that Delta had performed the album in full. She says: 'Calum and I have known each other for years. When he was in Australia, I popped up at one of his shows, too. I love him, he has such a beautiful voice.'
While Born To Try singer Delta feels Eurovision-ready, there is one place she most definitely won't grab the mic — at her own wedding to musician Matthew Copley this summer.

She says with a laugh: 'I have sung at every one of my mates' weddings, but no, I won't be singing at my own.
'My brother said to me, 'For my wedding, I want you to record the song so you can relax,' so I recorded The Darkness' I Believe In A Thing Called Love and they did their first dance to it.'
Delta and Matthew tour the world together, with him playing guitar in her band on stage in London.
When Jack points out it's said you should never work with children, animals or your partner, she laughs and insists: 'It's super-exciting.
'You get to live and breathe it together and you get to travel together. It actually came from Covid. And it was always natural as we always play music together.'
When Jack meets Delta, she dazzles like she's ready for a glossy magazine shoot, with perfect hair and make-up.
But she insists she's no diva. 'I am low key on my day to day,' she explains.
'When I'm not on a show, I am 20 minutes tops.'
And what is it that helps make UK shows so special?
'Your biscuits,' Delta hits back almost immediately. 'I love Hobnobs. Everyone is having a cup of tea with one.
'And I like that you can get a train everywhere. We don't have that back home. You may hate it, but you've not had life without Tubes.'
You wouldn't say that if you spent every morning with your face in someone's armpit on the Jubilee line, Delta.
Swedes win wary
Next year will mark the 70th Eurovision Song Contest – but it might be a damp squib if Sweden win as expected.
Comedy trio Kaj's entry Bara Bada Bastu, which is all about how great saunas are, is the favourite to triumph.

However, Swedish TV network SVT is not so enthusiastic. It has said the show would be smaller and with a lower budget than usual if the trio, above, win and they have to host it again.
It wasn't profitable enough for SVT as hosts in 2013, 2016 and in 2024, when they lost the equivalent of £7.7million.
Programme commissioner Anton Glanzelius said: 'It may be a smaller stage and lighting rig, but no matter what we do, there'll be large costs.'
On the pressure for broadcasters, he said: 'There is an expectation among the audience and the competing countries to get a show of a rarely seen kind, and that costs money.'
But the confident TV boss added: 'We are ready and have booked a kick-off meeting to start planning next year's show as early as Monday morning.'
A ball for Miriana
Malta's Miriana Conte is the contest's most controversial entry this year, thanks to her close-to-the-bone song Serving.
It was originally called Kant, meaning 'singing' in Maltese, but a complaint by the BBC over its similarity to a four-letter English expletive meant she had to change it.

Miriana admitted she had a 'tantrum' when she was told about having to change the lyrics while on the set of the video earlier this year.
But she has now come to terms with it and no longer sings the word, but reckons the crowd still will.
She said: 'It's all been crazy. Crazy because I'm in disbelief.'
Her performance, as seen in last night's second semi-final, includes an impressive costume change and an inflatable ball, left. But she said: 'I'm bruised and tired from rehearsals.'
On her chances, she added: 'I like to live in the moment and I'm really enjoying this. I'll celebrate regardless.'
JJ highly trained
You will have your socks blown off by Austria's entry JJ and his song Wasted Love – hitting notes I didn't think possible for a bloke.
He has spent months doing at least three hours of vocal practice a day, ready to amaze during his three-minute performance in black and white.

JJ told us: 'I'm practising every day. That's the opera singer in me who has to practise for at least three or four hours a day.
'It's been fun. Everything that's going to be put on stage in Basel is so exciting.'
But one thing he wasn't willing to sacrifice for his performance at the contest, sponsored by Royal Caribbean Cruises, was his grub.
He said: 'They normally say you have to avoid stuff, but I still eat anything I want. I'm not going to constrict myself.'
He is second in the bookies' odds, which he said is surreal.
JJ added: 'It's crazy. I feel honoured that everyone is accepting and loving the art I'm trying to put out there. It does put a little bit of pressure on me.'
A Block party at Glasto

Supermodel Gemma Ward suffers painful injuries during shocking surfing accident

Gemma Ward has revealed she suffered major injuries during a recent recent freak surfing accident. The Aussie model, 37, took to Instagram on Monday to recall the misadventure and said she broke three vertebrae in her spine. The single mother-of-three added that she was forced to work through her recovery, even travelling to Paris for a modelling job. 'A lot has happened since I last posted,' she started the post, which included a snap of The Great Gatsby actress in a neck brace. 'I broke 3 vertebrae in my spine from a surfing accident, flew to Paris to shoot for Lancôme again, which was a complete honour, but in the wake of my accident I forgot to renew my passport so I had to get an emergency one and nearly missed the whole shoot.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. In the wake of the accident, the model assured fans she is working on getting stronger while also balancing motherhood and an exciting new project. 'Currently working on my strength and rehabilitation and my novel as well as the strange mess of life with 3 kids,' she shared. 'Hope you are all doing well and getting some rest here and there,' she finished the post. Several of her famous friends flooded the comments section of the post with well wishes for the blonde beauty. 'So many emotions. Get better soon. Miss you and the babes and a NOVEL?? I cannot [wait] to read!' wrote fellow Aussie Nicole Trunfio. Sports Illustrated alum Jessica Gomes also commented on the post, writing: 'Always back in full form! You are the best!! Love you big!!!' Victoria's Secret model Martha Hunt simply left a bunch of heart and plaster emojis on the post. Gemma was recently spotted catching waves while enjoying a beach day with her children in Sydney. The famously private model was photographed barefoot and makeup free in April as she played doting mum, wrangling towels and carrying her kids' belongings. In one candid moment, she was seen clutching a stack of colourful beach towels and a pink water bottle, along with a pair of Converse sneakers, suggesting the day had been filled with sun-soaked fun and family bonding. Later, she was spotted helping one of her young children - dressed in a red and black wetsuit and covered in sand - navigate the shoreline. The heartwarming moment showed a different side of the international model who once graced the covers of Vogue and walked for Prada, Chanel, and Dior. Another snap captured the former fashion darling confidently carrying a large blue Odyssey surfboard, hinting that the beach outing wasn't just about the kids as Gemma appeared ready to catch a few waves herself.

Braveheart's Mel Gibson makes surprising confession about filming of iconic Scots movie

MEL Gibson has admitted he faked it as a film director when he was making Braveheart. The Aussie-born superstar, 69, said he had to pretend to the crew and enormous cast that he was totally in control of the £150million blockbuster. 2 Mel Gibson celebrated the 30th anniversary of Braveheart in Philadelphia Credit: Getty He came clean at a Fan Expo convention in Philadelphia, US, as the Oscar-winning epic celebrated its 30th anniversary. Gibson, who played legendary Scots freedom fighter Sir William Wallace, recalled: 'It was only my second outing as a director and it was a massive shoot. 'There were about 3,000 people on the set. They're all looking at you like you know what you're doing. 'So I pretended I knew what I was doing. 'But somehow it all came together. "Logistically speaking, it was a monster — from feeding everybody to getting them all to look like they were in the war.' Gibson said his 'proudest achievement' was avoiding serious injuries in the movie's many battle scenes. He explained: 'One guy got a hangnail and another got a broken nose and twisted ankle but that was it. 'It was a long shoot — there were 105 shooting days. We didn't get any days off.' 'But I'm really proud of the end result. It really paid off.' Braveheart fans go mad for Mel Gibson as he's asked about independence Elsewhere a former child star from Braveheart has revealed how he used to slag off Mel Gibson's dodgy Scots accent on set - so the Hollywood A-lister begged him to help improve his brogue. Andrew Weir from Ayr played William Wallace's best pal Hamish in the Oscar-winning flick and even managed to get family friend James Robinson a crucial part as the young freedom fighter. But the pair would regularly fall into hysterics at the Aussie actor's attempt to master our dialect. Andrew, who now lives in New York, says: 'I think Mel liked that we were kids and not intimidated by him. We used to laugh at his accent and he would ask us to help him make it better.'

Delta passenger's viral video ignites debate over how parents should handle screaming babies on planes

A Delta passenger has sparked a viral debate about an age-old traveling question: How do you handle a crying baby on a plane? A Barstool Sports contributor, Pat McAuliffe, shared a video on X on Saturday of himself sitting on a plane, while a baby could be heard crying off-camera. He went on to roll his eyes and stare blankly at the camera, visibly annoyed by the screaming baby on his flight. In the caption, McAuliffe shared his candid thoughts about how the parents should have soothed the baby. 'If your child is screaming on a flight (that's late with no AC and hasn't taken off yet @Delta) show it a f***ing phone,' he wrote in his post, which has more than 15 million views. 'Brain rot the baby on TikTok until it's quiet. Is that too much to ask?' In a follow-up video of himself on the flight, as the baby was still crying, McAuliffe clarified his initial comments about how parents care for their babies on a plane. 'I do feel bad for the parents but at some point you gotta try something new. Walk his ass up and down the aisle, distract him, do something. It's still going on. Simply praying it'll stop is not acceptable,' he added. He then questioned at what point the baby's screaming 'becomes a medical emergency,' since the child was 'crying for two hours.' 'Also why are these people not at least talking to their kid to soothe him? STAND UP AND WALK HIM AROUND,' McAuliffe concluded. Many people, including parents, criticized McAuliffe's harsh response to the crying child. 'As a parent of three, shut the f*** up and put your headphones and enjoy the flight. That parents is in absolute hell,' one wrote. 'Is it too much to ask to buy proper noise-cancelling headphones..?' another added. 'I can guarantee you that the parent is stressing out way more than you flying by yourself with ear buds in. Grow up,' a third responded. Others went on to urge McAuliffe to react to the situation differently, with one writing: 'Bro, if this is the worst thing in your life, consider yourself lucky. Man up and see if the mom is okay and if she needs anything. She is probably trying her best.' However, some people instead claimed the parents on the flight should have soothed their crying baby on the flight. They also shared some of the bad experiences they've had with loud babies on a plane. 'I agree. This is the parents' fault. I have two and we can entertain our babies on the plane,' one responded. 'If the babies cry you are failing as a parent. Plain and simple. Get creative.' 'This happened to us, and while I'm fine with crying babies, it went on for three hours with the parents doing nothing, seemingly immune to their baby's screams,' another wrote. 'A responsible parent would consult a pediatrician before the flight for tips on making a baby comfortable with flying.' 'It's awful. This just happened to us recently. Sat in business, the flight was pretty empty,' a third wrote. 'No one behind or in front of us. Suddenly, flight attendants placed a family with two wild kids right behind us. Screaming, crying, kicking, and slapping the trays non-stop. Absolute torture.' Last year, a mother named Jess also sparked a debate when she shared a video of her baby crying on a three-hour plane. She admitted she became 'progressively more and more defeated' on the journey. However, she wanted to share the video to let other mothers know it's not their fault if they can't stop their baby from crying for long periods of time. Spaulding's post quickly sparked debate on TikTok, with commenters divided between users who said the situation was their 'nightmare as a passenger' and others who empathized with the mother.
