US chip policy shift boosts outlook for Samsung, SK Hynix

On Tuesday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed that the government has cleared Nvidia to sell its
H20 graphics processing units
(GPUs) to China.
The move is part of broader trade talks with Beijing involving rare earth elements and is aimed at increasing China's dependence on American technology.
"We don't sell them our best stuff, not our second-best stuff, not even our third-best". Lutnick added, noting that the H20 is Nvidia's "fourth-best" chip.
In April, President Donald Trump had blocked H20 exports to China to limit China's access to advanced US technology. The resulting export freeze left Nvidia with unsold stock, leading to a USD 4.5 billion charge and a USD 2.5 billion drop in quarterly revenue.
Now that exports are back on track, demand for HBM chips--which power AI accelerators and high-performance servers by delivering faster data processing than traditional DRAM--is expected to rebound.
Samsung
and SK Hynix, key HBM suppliers to Nvidia, are likely to see a positive impact.
The H20 chip includes both HBM3 and the newer HBM3E memory. While it may not excel at training AI models, it is optimized for inference tasks, an area of AI experiencing rapid growth.
Samsung has reportedly been supplying HBM3 for the H20 since last year. However, the earlier export ban had taken a toll, contributing to a 55.9 per cent drop in Samsung's operating profit year-over-year for the second quarter.
Meanwhile, SK Hynix, which currently holds the top market share in HBM and was the first to supply HBM3E to Nvidia, stands to gain in the short term from the restored H20 exports.
"It's a short-term positive development for the AI GPU and HBM sectors that Nvidia is now able to resume exports to China," said Ryu Hyung-keun of Daishin Securities. "SK Hynix is expected to benefit in the near term from the resumption of H20 shipments."

China starts building world's largest dam on Brahmaputra in Tibet
China on Saturday formally started the construction of the USD 167.8 billion dam over the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, closer to the Indian border in Arunachal Pradesh. Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced the start of the construction of the dam at a ground-breaking ceremony in the lower reaches of the Brahmaputra river, locally known as Yarlung Zangbo, at Nyingchi City, official media reported. The ceremony took place at the dam site of Nyingchi's Mainling hydropower station in Tibet Autonomous Region, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The hydropower project, regarded as the biggest infrastructure project in the world, raised concerns in the lower riparian countries, India and Bangladesh. The project will consist of five cascade hydropower stations, with a total investment estimated at around 1.2 trillion Yuan (about USD 167.8 billion), the report said. According to a 2023 report, the hydropower station is expected to generate more than 300 billion kWh of electricity each year enough to meet the annual needs of over 300 million people. It will primarily deliver electricity for external consumption while also addressing local demand in Tibet, which China officially refers to as Xizang. Representatives from various organisations, including the National Development and Reform Commission and the Power Construction Corporation of China and locals attended the ceremony, the report said. PCB made Azhar Mahmood interim Test coach as they didn't want to pay compensatory six months' salary: Report
Pakistan are gearing up for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh. However, just a day prior to the start of the contest, a damning report has emerged, stating that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are keen on releasing Azhar Mahmood, who was recently appointed as the interim red-ball coach. The report also states that the PCB are unable to release the former Pakistan all-rounder, as they are constrained by the contract signed with Mahood, which was signed by the previous management. According to a report, PCB want to release Azhar Mahmood(AFP) If Azhar Mahmood is indeed released by the Pakistan board, then they would be required to compensate him with six months' salary, approximately PKR 450 million (USD 1,60,000). As of now, Mahmood is receiving a salary of approximately PKR 7.5 million per month. 'Which is why the PCB recently named him as interim head coach of the national red-ball team until his contract expires next year in April-May,' PTI quoted a source as saying. The report also states that the PCB wanted to release Mike Hesson after the recently appointed white-ball coach gave a list of his own support staff, which didn't include the former Pakistan all-rounder. 'The problem arose when Mike Hesson, the recently-appointed white-ball head coach, made it clear he would have his own support staff and Azhar was not among his selections,' the source said. "This left the PCB with a major problem of how to utilise Azhar's expertise to justify paying him such a handsome salary, as even if they wanted, they couldn't release him without the six months of compensation," the insider added. Azhar Mahmood not happy The report also states that Azhar Mahmood himself isn't happy with how the PCB is functioning and wants to be assigned to the junior team. "Aaqib Javed, who is now a selector and head of the national cricket academy and close to the board chairman, is not impressed with his (Azhar's) coaching style. But to justify his contract for the time being, they have named him as interim head coach of the Test side," said the source. It must be mentioned that Azhar is not new to managing Pakistan as he has been associated with senior squads in various coaching capacities, including assistant and bowling coach. The report also stated that the PCB faced financial liabilities while trying to release Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, Misbah ul Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed from their contracts as mentors of the domestic teams in the Champions Cup.

Samsung gets 201K pre-orders for Fold 7, Flip 7 phones in 48 hours in India
Consumer electronics maker Samsung on Saturday said it has received 2.1 lakh pre-orders for the latest seventh generation of its foldable smartphone series within 48 hours of its launch in India. Samsung's seventh generation of foldable smartphone series was launched in India on Jul 9, 2025. Samsung, which last week launched Galaxy Z Fold7, Galaxy Z Flip7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 FE smartphones, said this huge number of pre-orders signals "huge consumer demand and excitement for the brand's seventh generation of foldable". It is "nearly equalling the pre-orders received for the Galaxy S25 series earlier this year", Samsung Electronics said in a statement. Samsung had received a record 4.3 lakh pre-orders for its smartphone Galaxy S25, in a nearly three-week period after the launch. For the first 48 hours, the number of pre-orders for S25 and Fold7/Flip7 is almost identical. The company priced these Made-in-India foldable smartphones between Rs 89,000 and Rs 2.11 lakh. Galaxy Z Fold7 starting from Rs 1.75 lakh and going up to Rs 2.11 lakh. Galaxy Z Flip7 is priced between Rs 1.10 lakh and Rs 1.22 lakh. Galaxy Z Flip7 FE price starts from Rs 89,000 and Rs 95,999.
