KUALA LUMPUR: Eleven-year-old Alif Zafran Zairif stole the spotlight at the Ejen Ali cosplay competition during Karnival Jom Heboh at KL Base today, wearing a striking homemade replica of the animated hero's Satria suit.
The Satria suit, short for System Advance Tactical Raid Intelligence Armor, is a signature upgrade from the animated series, characterised by its high-tech design, glowing blue LED lights, visor helmet, and reinforced combat-ready body plating.
Alif's father, Zairif Affizal, 38, was the creative force behind the costume, completing the project in just two weeks after learning about the competition.
"I only found out about the Ejen Ali cosplay contest two weeks ago, so I worked on it day and night," said Zairif, who used images and videos from Facebook and TikTok for reference.
"This was my second time making a costume, and I wanted to go all out for my son."
Rather than ordering a custom made suit which can cost up to RM1,000, Zairif built the ensemble from scratch himself for under RM300, using mainly EVA foam and recycled materials.
He said the most challenging part was crafting the helmet.
"To get it right, you really need skill. Without the proper technique, it ends up looking odd.
"It took some trial and error to get the shape, proportions and finish just right."
Alif took home RM500 and some goodies, followed by the runner-up and third place both cosplaying as Ejen Alicia winning RM400 and RM300.
Judging the competition was Ejen Rizwan voice actor Azman Zulkiply, who praised the high level of creativity shown by all participants, especially the support shown by parents.
"If I could, I'd make everyone the winner.
"Every contestant had their own unique effort, and you could see how happy the kids were on stage," he told reporters.
He admitted it was a tough decision but ultimately named Alif as his personal favourite.
"I really liked Alicia, the last contestant with the action scene, very cool with the cut-outs and all.
"But if I had to choose one, I'd go with the Satria suit. The glowing blue eyes and lights were next-level. You could see the effort."
Azman also praised the Ejen Ali franchise for instilling positive values in children.
"The series promotes friendship, loyalty and other strong values.
"It's wonderful to see parents supporting their kids through local content like this.
"It shows how much fun and pride there is in celebrating something made in Malaysia."
The day's activities kicked off at 9am with Zumba with Ejen Ali, followed by a colouring contest at the mini stage at Studio Tonton Drama Sangat and the cosplay competition at 11am.
Yesterday, Fans of Ejen Ali: The Movie 2 flocked to a special meet-and-greet session at Karnival Jom Heboh 2025 to catch a glimpse of the voice actors and mascots of the popular animation.
Shafiq Isa and Noorhayati Maslini Omar, who voice Ejen Bakar and Ejen Alicia, charmed the crowd with an interactive session and prize giveaways.

Addison Rae churns out serviceable beats in debut album

BEFORE venturing into music full-time, Addison Rae was a popular content creator on TikTok. Like most Gen Zs, Rae's feed mainly consisted of dance videos, lip-syncs and comedic skits with other creators on the app. But in 2021, the 24-year-old dipped her toes into music with the release of her debut single Obsessed. The venture was cut short due to a slew of negative reviews, which prompted Rae to seek refuge in acting and cosmetics. The hiatus did not last long as Rae found moderate success with her debut EP AR. Almost two years later, the Louisiana native returns more ready than ever to delve further in music, releasing a full-length album Addison. Pop in mind Throughout the album's 12 tracks, Rae immerses herself in the various forms of pop, expressing her musicality through trip hop, dance-pop and house music. Coming from a strong dance background and adoring pop music, Rae envisioned Addison to be a dance record. The album's first introduction itself is a straightforward impression of this. Though moody in nature, Diet Pepsi moves listeners with its dreamy synth pop melody, while singing of the immortal feeling of young love. The rest of the album mimics this vision too. From the opening track New York to the last track Headphones On, the album is made for pop music lovers in mind. Its simple yet infectious productions will have you singing and dancing along to its fun and lively nature. Fame is a Gun, Times Like These and Aquamarine are offerings to look forward to on Addison. Convincing transition Considering her background as a professional dancer, it seems appropriate for Rae to adopt this musical direction. The songstress has adequate dancing skills and vocal chops to pull this aspiration off. Many personalities of her nature, before her – be it reality stars or social media personalities – often struggle to make the crossover to the music world. It is, therefore, commendable of her to make a convincing musical debut. Her musical efforts have dissociated her from the previous personality she crafted on TikTok. The majority of listeners will indeed view her solely as a new artiste, increasing the probability that her musical aspirations are taken seriously. Carbon copy That said, not much is exciting about her tracks. While they can be pleasing to the ear, they are not memorable. They do not make a lasting impact on most casual listeners. Their lack of originality is the reason for this. Rae's songs do not have much individuality to them. They can pass off as other artistes' work in the current pop landscape. Songs such as Diet Pepsi, Headphones On and Fame is a Gun, for instance, are reminiscent of the early works of Lana Del Ray and Britney Spears. Lack of range Another issue with Addison is the absence of musical diversity. The songs on the album closely resemble one another. Be it the song's progression or Rae's vocal technique, there is a common set of elements that are recycled throughout the record. The tempos are the only differentiating factor. She may have done this to be sonically cohesive, but this prevents Rae from demonstrating her musical range. In return, this may discourage listeners from staying on for more. If Rae strives to be known for her singles rather than albums, her current efforts will lead her there. Judging from her interviews and performances, this is clearly not the case. If anything, Rae has the potential to be among pop's new generation of promising artistes. The Diet Pepsi hitmaker just needs a bit more time to sharpen her musical identity. Addison, overall, passes off as a serviceable musical offering. It may not be remarkable, but it certainly has the treats to keep you afloat in the meantime.

Eda Ezrin denies connection to drug bust involving TikToker

NARATHIWAT: Malaysian dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin, who is currently being held at the Narathiwat prison, has denied any connection to a major drug bust involving a woman known as Yuyu and urged the public not to pass judgement based on a viral video. The 30-year-old, who has been in custody since November last year, said she had no ties to Yuyu, who was recently arrested with five others and found in possession of drugs worth more than RM5 million. In a brief 30-minute interview at the prison today, Eda hoped her fans would not associate her with individuals involved in drug-related activities simply because of a TikTok clip circulating on social media. "I'm just an ordinary singer. I have no connection whatsoever with the woman named Yuyu. "She is not my friend, as claimed online. I've only met her a few times at social gatherings. She is a friendly person and often invites people to join her TikTok live sessions," she said. Eda said prison officers had informed her about the viral content, and she was shocked to learn that her casual interaction with Yuyu in a short video had sparked misunderstanding. "I want to clarify this to my fans so they do not view me negatively. I have never been involved in any unlawful activity," she said. Appearing composed throughout the interview, Eda expressed hope that her family and supporters would continue praying for her, her husband, and the four others detained with them to be released soon. "However, if it is my fate to remain in prison longer, as I've been informed that the Thai prosecutors are still appealing my case, I will accept it with an open heart," she said. Eda, whose full name is Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail; her husband Mohd Affendi Ahmad, 35; and their friends; Eridieka Mohd Noor, 33; Mohamad Alif Deraman, 33; Nur Aida Mamat, 33; and Zuhaira Nasrin, 26; have been in prison for nearly nine months. The six were arrested for allegedly possessing 6,059 methamphetamine pills. In March, the Narathiwat Court acquitted them of jointly possessing the pills with intent to distribute, but allowed prosecutors to appeal the decision.
