MURDERBOT Recap: (S01E06) Command Feed

Murderbot Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed,' is wall-to-wall narrative action. Not a minute is wasted. The outing also deftly balances that story movement with character development, particularly for Mensah. I love her burgeoning bond with SecUnit and how that takes shape this week. Anna Konkle also proves her versatility, doing quite the heel turn as Leebeebee's true motivations come to the fore.

We open with a scene from episode 356 of The Rise & Fall of Sanctuary Moon , featuring Flight Captain Hossein (John Cho) and Navigation Unit (DeWanda Wise). They're stranded on a planet. SecUnit (Alexander Skarsgård) tells us this is a crucial turning point in their romance. Hossein tells Navigation Unit a joke, causing her to laugh awkwardly. It's a love story for the (space) ages.
In real life, SecUnit and Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) narrowly evaded death by explosion after a mysterious someone took out the emergency beacon. Unfortunately, the hopper is out of commission. Sure, it's structurally sound, but it can't fly at the moment. Mensah remarks that SecUnit has something protruding from its abdomen — a piece of the printer. Eh, it's fine. Make Room for TV
Mensah asks if our titular bot has copies of the repair manual in its system. Murderbot admits it cleared said copies to make room for Season 19 of Sanctuary Moon . Mensah is incredulous. How could it shirk its responsibilities in favor of binge-watching a crappy show? Hey, Sanctuary Moon is quality entertainment. Mensah decides to fix the hopper herself. SecUnit removes the printer fragment from its abdomen; unfortunately, it starts to leak lubricant. Uh-oh.

Meanwhile, back at the PresAux habitat, everyone scrambles to pack their belongings while Gurathin (David Dastmalchian) tries to ping Mensah. Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) asks Pin-Lee (Sabrina Wu) and Arada (Tattiawna Jones) if they need assistance, but our fave couple assures him they're fine. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Leebeebee (Konkle) thanks Bharadwaj (Tamara Podemski) for allowing her to help after Gurathin rejected her. They chat about Bharadwaj's scar from the two-headed monster that attacked her. It's clearly still a traumatic memory for her. Leebeebee kisses her hand, where the scar is. Leebeebee wonders if that was too weird, but Bharadwaj reassures her that it was a sweet gesture. Just Breathe
After this, Bharadwaj asks Gurathin for an update. So far, it's all radio silence. Leebeebee believes Mensah is fine — she has that cute SecUnit with her. The conversation pivots to ownership of sentient constructs and how the Corporation Rim believes they don't have rights. However, Bharadwaj thinks consent and autonomy are important. And she's right.

Then, SecUnit realizes the wires are the issue. Mensah starts having a panic attack, which she mistakes for a heart attack. SecUnit is used to protecting clients physically, so this is the first time it has observed what's transpiring internally. It reassures her that she's not having a heart attack.
It pulls up an episode of Sanctuary Moon that alleviates anxiety. Mensah sits beside it and notices it quoting the episode verbatim. Mensah finds her heart rate slowing and her breathing more regulated. She smiles at SecUnit and seems to understand why it loves this show so much. This is a sweet scene. Backstory
Next, SecUnit rises to its feet as it inexplicably spouts gibberish. Suddenly, it collapses. It has lost too much lubricant from the damage inflicted by the printer fragment.

Later, Gurathin asks Leebeebee why she joined the DeltFall survey team. She explains that DeltFall purchased her indenture from her previous employer, SysCommSols. She had four years left, but participating in this survey is knocking off time. So, she could be finished in two and a half years. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Then, Leebeebee plans to buy a license for childbirth with her earnings. Bharadwaj is confused. In the Preservation Alliance, you don't need a license to have children. There, the community comes together to help fund childcare, education, medical care, etc. The way it should be. Heel Turn
The chat pivots to the gaps in the maps. DeltFall had the same issue. When the team would approach the areas omitted from the maps, the two-headed creatures tried to eat them. Then, when the team returned to the habitat, the rogue SecUnits carried out a massacre.

Gurathin and Bharadwaj comfort Leebeebee. Well, until she produces a gun and trains it on them. Leebeebee demands that the pair give her access to their HubSystem. Meanwhile, SecUnit wakes up on the floor of the hopper. Mensah improvised — she hooked SecUnit up to the hopper, utilizing the hopper's lubricant to revive it. She figured both shared a similar lubricant. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+
This gives SecUnit an idea. They could use fiber from its spine to repair the hopper. After all, human tissue is used to fuel a lot of things. It instructs Mensah to make the incision in its back, crack open its spinal cord and remove the fiber strand from there. Murderbot reassures Mensah that it turned off its pain sensors, so it won't feel a thing. Procedures and Massages
Mensah understandably panics as she conducts this procedure, but she gets it done like the badass she is. At the same time, Ratthi walks in on Pin-Lee giving Arada a shoulder massage. He offers to massage Pin-Lee's shoulders. We've got a massage train here, folks. Ratthi asks Arada and Pin-Lee how they feel about SecUnit being rogue. Arada is fine with it. However, Pin-Lee is in panic mode.

Then, Bharadwaj calls the trio downstairs, where they discover Leebeebee is holding her and Gurathin hostage. Thankfully, SecUnit uses its fiber strand to power up the hopper, so our dynamic duo is on the way home to save the day. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+
Meanwhile, Leebeebee explains that Gurathin will grant her access to HubSystem, including all the maps. Gurathin claims he can't. Leebeebee shoots him in the knee. Bharadwaj instinctively moves to help him, but Leebeebee reveals that if anyone moves a muscle, she'll kill someone. Bharadwaj starts negotiating. She declares she can help Leebeebee get sanctuary on Preservation Alliance. Heads Will Explode
Leebeebee asks Bharadwaj if the latter can get her millions of credits. Gurathin logs into HubSystem. Arada reminds Leebeebee that they saved her life. However, Leebeebee was never in danger. She didn't work for DeltFall. She warns that the group will meet her employer soon. Oh, and more SecUnits (probably rogue) are on the way.

Leebeebee urges the crew to give her what she wants. They could walk away (mostly) unscathed. Then, Leebeebee admits the childbirth thing was a lie before also confessing to orchestrating the emergency beacon explosion. She states that Mensah and SecUnit won't come to the rescue because they're dead.
Thankfully, the gang has little time to mourn before Murderbot barges into the habitat, wrist raised. Leebeebee moves behind Gurathin and puts her arm around his neck. She presses the gun against Gurathin's temple. Before she can finish her threat, though, SecUnit explodes her head. Her body hits the floor with a thud. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 6, 'Command Feed.' Naturally, the group all have different reactions to Murderbot killing Leebeebee. Ratthi vomits. Pin-Lee bursts into uninhibited laughter. Bharadwaj is in shock. SecUnit insists they all get in the hopper before Leebeebee's employer arrives. Mensah agrees with it.

However, before they depart, Murderbot needs to repair itself. We see more footage from Sanctuary Moon as our bot explains that feelings are, well, strange. The humans undoubtedly thought that it was close to becoming like them. Outside, Arada comforts Bharadwaj after the latter bursts into tears. Can they trust SecUnit after this? Do they see it as a human-killing machine?
As for Murderbot, it might have enjoyed exploding Leebeebee's head a little too much.

NEWS OF THE WEEK: Nancy Meyers blindsided by news of The Holiday limited series

On Friday, editors at Deadline reported that producers at Apple TV+ are working on a TV show inspired by the 2006 romantic comedy. Meyers wrote, produced, and directed the film. Following the announcement, the filmmaker took to Instagram Stories to share her reaction. "News to me," she wrote, adding a thinking face emoji. "Imagine my surprise when I opened Instagram and this was the first post I saw." Meyers didn't elaborate further. Representatives for Apple TV+ have not yet responded to the 75-year-old's comments. The Holiday follows Iris (Kate Winslet), a London-based columnist, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), a movie trailer editor in Los Angeles.

PLAYING THIS WEEKEND: Among this week's most notable new streaming content is part one of season two of Netflix (NFLX) supernatural comedy series 'Wednesday,' which is based on the 'Addams Family' franchise. Apple TV+ (AAPL) users can catch the new season of comedy series 'Platonic,' starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, while Hulu subscribers can catch the new season of 'King of the Hill,' the first new episodes in the series since the show previously ended in 2010. Additionally, Amazon Prime Video (AMZN) subscribers can catch heist action comedy film 'The Pickup,' starring Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer, and Eva Longoria. DISNEY: Disney (DIS) reported better-than-expected Q3 adjusted earnings per share, though revenue was slightly below the Street, with its Entertainment segment reporting a 6% increase in direct-to-consumer revenue. The media giant reported 183M Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, an increase of 2.6M year-over-year, with just Disney+ subscribers increasing 1.8M to 128M. Looking ahead, Disney also increased its FY25 adjusted earnings guidance, with the company adding that it will no longer report paid subscribers and ARPU metrics, arguing that such metrics have become 'less meaningful' to evaluating the performance of its businesses. Of note, however, Disney's ESPN said it will launch its new previously announced direct-to-consumer streaming service on Thursday, August 21, bringing the full suite of ESPN networks and services – within an enhanced ESPN App with new, personalized features and functionality – 'directly to fans.' Timed for a marquee stretch of live sports programming across ESPN platforms, the launch of ESPN DTC coincides with the start of the college football and NFL seasons, US Open tennis, international soccer, women's college soccer, volleyball, field hockey, and more – with the start of the WNBA playoffs, PLL playoffs, and NBA and NHL seasons, as well as UFC and WWE events just around the corner. Designed to give fans more choice and flexibility, ESPN DTC will offer two plans, including an unlimited plan for $29.99/month that gives fans access to all of ESPN's linear networks – ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ESPN Deportes – in addition to ESPN on ABC, ESPN+, ESPN3, SECN+, and ACCNX, covering 47,000 live events each year, on-demand replays, studio shows, original programming, and more. Bundling opportunities for the ESPN unlimited plan with Disney+ and Hulu include a special offer at launch for $29.99/month for the first 12 months. In more ESPN news, ESPN and the NFL have reached new licensing agreements, extending ESPN's NFL Draft rights and, separately, adding NFL programming and content to ESPN's upcoming Direct-to-Consumer service, as well as to Disney+. The agreement also includes the opportunity for fans to bundle ESPN's DTC service with NFL+ Premium. Beginning with the 2026 NFL Draft, Disney+ and Hulu will also stream ESPN, ABC, and ESPN Deportes' trio of Draft presentations. All offerings will be available on ESPN's DTC service. Additional alternate NFL Draft presentations from ESPN will be available on the same streaming platforms, as will a new daily show dedicated to the NFL Draft. The new show, which will air on ESPN2 most days, will launch the day following the Super Bowl and continue through that year's Draft. More highlights: ESPN and ABC will each produce telecasts for Rounds 1-3 on Thursday and Friday-a staple of ESPN's presentation since 2019. On Saturday, ESPN will continue to air Rounds 4-7, with ABC simulcasting the network's coverage. ESPN can add other alternate telecasts across streaming platforms for Rounds 1-7. Premier football shows, College GameDay and NFL Live, will continue to be on-site from the NFL Draft. ESPN Radio will continue its live broadcast of the NFL Draft. Separately, ESPN and the NFL have reached an agreement to expand the NFL experience across ESPN's DTC service and Disney+. The agreement includes rights for additional NFL content for ESPN as well as robust interactive features to deepen the experience for fans. ESPN's DTC offering will also stream select out-of-market NFL preseason games during the 2025 and 2026 seasons. ESPN will also be able to sell and bundle NFL+ Premium, the League's DTC service that launched in 2022, with ESPN's DTC service, which gives fans the ability to watch NFL Network and NFL RedZone through the NFL+ Premium offering. Additionally, ESPN and WWE, part of TKO Group Holdings (TKO), announced a landmark rights agreement as ESPN platforms, including the new ESPN direct-to-consumer streaming service, will become the exclusive U.S. domestic home of all WWE Premium Live Events, including the two-night cultural phenomenon WrestleMania, starting in 2026. This deal makes ESPN home to the highest-profile WWE events of the year. The ESPN DTC service will stream all WWE PLEs annually, in their entirety, with select simulcasting on ESPN linear platforms. Marquee PLEs include WrestleMania and SummerSlam – both two-night events – and Royal Rumble, Survivor Series, Money in the Bank, among others. WWE will continue to produce all PLEs. PARAMOUNT SKYDANCE: On Thursday, Skydance Media and Paramount Global announced the completion of their merger, creating a premier standalone global media and entertainment company, Paramount, a Skydance Corporation. Paramount Class B shares began trading August 7 on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the new ticker symbol 'PSKY.' Following the news, Barclays lowered the firm's price target on Paramount Skydance (PSKY) to $8 from $12 and maintained an Underweight rating on the shares. The firm updated the price target to reflect the post-deal capital structure, earnings expectations and valuation. WARNER BROS. DISCOVERY: Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) reported mixed Q2 results, with global streaming subscribers increasing 3.4M quarter-over-quarter to 125.7M. Streaming revenues rose 8% sequentially ex-foreign exchange to $2.793B as well. FOX: Fox Corp. (FOXA) reported better-than-expected adjusted earnings per share and revenue for Q4. Along with the earnings announcement, the company said that FOX One, the new wholly-owned direct to consumer streaming service, will launch on August 21 for $19.99 per month or $199.99 annually. This month, FOX One will bring all of FOX's News, Sports and Entertainment branded content together in one streaming platform. FOX Nation and B1G+ will also be available in the FOX One platform. FOX One will feature AI-powered personalization technologies that integrate live and video on-demand content. AMC NETWORKS: Meanwhile, AMC Networks (AMCX) also reported upbeat Q2 results, with the company noting that it is seeing 'continued momentum' in Amazon Prime Video Channels streaming bundles including AMC+ bundles with AcornTV, Discovery+, Starz and MGM+ in market in 2Q and the new launch of an Acorn TV and MGM+ bundled offering. Additionally, AMC Networks reported that streaming revenues grew 12% year-over-year in Q2 to $169M. Commenting on the results, CEO Kristin Dolan said, 'We are executing our clear strategic plan focused on programming, partnerships and profitability. We remain committed to delivering high-quality and distinctive series and films to our engaged fans across all platforms, including the best collection of targeted streaming services in the world. In the second quarter, we saw streaming revenue growth accelerate, strength in content licensing and continued healthy free cash flow generation.
