The Maharashtra legislative council experienced a heated exchange on Thursday between minister Shambhuraj Desai and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Anil Parab, following a contentious "traitor" remark directed at Desai, resulting in a brief adjournment of the House.
The intense debate arose during discussions regarding a proposal to allocate 50 per cent of units in new housing societies for Marathi residents. Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe subsequently ordered the removal of both leaders' remarks from official records.
During Question Hour, Milind Narvekar of Shiv Sena (UBT) enquired about a social organisation's request for 50 per cent housing reservation for Marathi people in the city.
Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, who oversees Housing, responded in writing that no such correspondence was received.
BJP's Chitra Wagh supported the 50 per cent reservation proposal and questioned if similar initiatives existed during Uddhav Thackeray's chief ministership. Minister Desai, responding for Shinde, confirmed no such proposals existed during the MVA government's tenure.
The situation escalated when Parab mentioned his previous private member's bill regarding housing reservation for Marathi speakers.

Desai's response about MVA's inaction led to a confrontation, with Parab using the term "gaddar" towards Desai, prompting a challenge for confrontation outside the House.
Following the 10-minute adjournment and resumption, Desai affirmed the government's commitment to prioritising Marathi people in housing schemes. Sachin Ahir of Sena (UBT) highlighted concerns about non-residents purchasing properties for investment, citing BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's Khar flat situation.
Later, speaking to reporters, Desai explained the exchange occurred during debates about protecting native Maharashtrians' housing rights. He defended his response to Parab's provocation, citing their previous roles in the MVA government and their shared connection to Balasaheb Thackeray's teachings.

Ruling Shiv Sena, BJP divided over ‘aspirational toilets' project in Mumbai

Mumbai: The ruling Shiv Sena and BJP seem to be divided over 'aspirational toilets'. After the state govt ordered a stay on BMC's Rs 12 crore aspirational toilets construction contract and sought a report in 30 days, BMC officials said that the contract for aspirational toilets was granted in 2023 and it was funded by the Mumbai City District Planning and Development Council (DPDC) fund. In 2023, the project was sanctioned by then Mumbai city guardian minister Deepak Kesarkar of the Shiv Sena, and the present set of officials had nothing to do with it. Interestingly, the project that was pushed by then Sena Minister Kesarkar was exposed by BJP MLA Ameet Satam through a calling attention motion. BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar also slammed the project and asked how the BMC was spending over Rs 1.5 crore per toilet. BJP Minister Ashish Shelar too criticised the project, questioning if approval for the toilets was obtained from the heritage committee, as the sites include Unesco-recognised heritage sites and precincts. Shelar, who is the culture minister, said there are strict regulations governing construction in such areas and emphasised that the aesthetic integrity of Mumbai must be preserved, and pedestrian rights should not be compromised. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Many of these toilets are in the heritage precincts of Colaba and Fort areas. The aspirational toilets incorporate smart features like automatic flushing, sensor-based lighting and ventilation, and even voice assistance. These toilets have a European-style design and these toilets are part of a broader initiative to improve public amenities, maintain cleanliness, and provide better sanitation for residents and visitors. Officials pointed out that the project was planned and approved during the Mahayuti govt when Eknath Shinde was CM and Kesarkar the guardian minister for Mumbai City, indicating that there was friction between the ruling Sena and BJP over the project. Shinde is now the guardian minister of Mumbai City. Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, who is also from the BJP, ruled that the state govt must direct Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani to conduct a probe against Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Ashwini Joshi, who is pushing the aspirational toilet project, and take action against her if any irregularities are found in the probe. BMC has claimed that three tenders were floated for 13 toilets worth around Rs 21 crore. Each toilet costs around Rs 1.65 crore. However, three aspirational toilets were proposed on open spaces, so they were dropped. One toilet was in Dharavi, which was dropped since the area is now part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. For the toilet near Sion Fort, BMC couldn't get permission from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and it was dropped. The toilet at VB Worlikar Marg in Worli was cancelled after orders from the municipal commissioner. At the moment, work is going on only for seven toilets that cost around Rs 12 crore. Just last week, Makarand Narwekar, former BJP corporator from Colaba, wrote to municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani demanding a vigilance probe into the aspirational toilets scam, but didn't get any response from BMC.

Ramdas Athawale urges calm amid Raj Thackeray-Nishikant Dubey row

Mumbai: Amid the ongoing verbal spat between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey over the Hindi language debate in Maharashtra, Union Minister and Republican Party of India (Athawale) president Ramdas Athawale on Saturday has called for restraint, urging all parties to maintain peace and avoid statements that could disrupt Mumbai's communal harmony. Responding to the exchange of inflammatory remarks, Athawale said, 'Such statements against each other can spoil the atmosphere of Mumbai. We should maintain peace. It's not right to speak in this manner.' The controversy began after Dubey reportedly said, 'Marathi logon ko hum yahan pe patak patak ke maarenge', to which Raj Thackeray hit back sharply, saying, 'You come to Mumbai. Mumbai ke samundar mein dubo dubo ke maarenge'. Speaking to IANS, Athawale termed the comments from both leaders as 'extremely objectionable.' He said, 'Raj Thackeray says he will drown Dubey, and Dubey says he will beat him up - this language is not appropriate. If you want to fight someone, go to Pakistan and kill terrorists. Why disturb peace in Mumbai?' Athawale also reacted to Uddhav Thackeray's recent allegations against the Election Commission of India. In an interview published, Shiv Sena (UBT) mouthpiece, Uddhav, accused the poll panel of unfairly granting the Shiv Sena's symbol and name to Eknath Shinde's faction. 'Uddhav Thackeray should understand that if two-thirds of the MLAs break away, they are considered the real party under the law. Eknath Shinde had that majority, and so the Election Commission made the rightful decision. Thackeray's accusations are wrong. The Election Commission is not a stone. It should not be blamed,' Athawale asserted. Regarding the petition filed in the Supreme Court against the MNS for alleged hooliganism, Athawale said, 'There will be no place for goondaism in Mumbai. Everyone has the right to learn Marathi, but no one has the right to take the law into their own hands. I hope the Supreme Court takes strict action and sends such elements to jail.' Athawale also spoke on the ongoing India-Pakistan cricket match, which is being held in the UK, stating, 'The way Pakistan was behind the Pahalgam attack, India responded strongly under PM Modi's leadership. If the match had taken place in India, it would have created unnecessary tension. Still, sports should not be politicised. Just as our soldiers showed courage through surgical strikes, our athletes should show the same courage on the field.' When asked about the investigation into Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's husband, Robert Vadra, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi defended him, Athawale said, 'If Robert Vadra has earned money through unlawful means, investigative agencies have the right to probe. Rahul Gandhi defending him isn't appropriate. If guilty, Vadra must face legal consequences.' On the ongoing INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi, Athawale said, 'The INDIA Bloc is weakening. AAP has already walked out. Mamata Banerjee and others might leave soon. By 2029, this alliance will completely disintegrate. It has no real strength left.'
