If there's anyone who knows the importance of grassroots venues to London's music ecosystem, it's Apple Music DJ Matt Wilkinson.
The industry tastemaker firmly embedded himself in the London scene as a former new music editor at NME before bringing you the best emerging acts around over the airwaves on his daily radio show.
And by night, you'll often find him at one of the capital's many gig spots unearthing the next Fontaines DC, Charlie XCX or Lola Young.
'We have such an incredible influx of culture coming in and one of the obvious funnels out is music and performing arts', Matt tells Metro.
'You get different people heading to London – some of them not through choice, some of them because it's London and because it's got this history. When you throw it all together, you just need small venues to be able to give these artists their start.
'It's impossible for an artist to make good music and suddenly go from playing to nobody to selling out Brixton Academy in front of 5,000 people. You need those middle ground venues where you can play to 50 people, then 100 people, then 250, then a 1,000, then 2,000. It's important to have that kind of stepping stone or that ladder that small venues provide.
'They're the lifeblood. Not just of London music but the city itself. It's not just music venues, but comedy venues, theatres, and independent cinemas.'
Ticketing app DICE has put together a list of their 25 grassroots artists you need to see in London over the next six months.
With tickets ranging from free to £27.50, these shows will ensure a great night to suit all tastes and budgets.

This week, Metro along with the London Mayor's Office, TfL, MVT, the Featured Artist Coalition and London Creates Music, launched the London Creates MUSIC campaign at the Outernet in Denmark Street highlighting the importance of London's grassroots music venues and its musical heritage.
The map will be screened for a month at the Outernet London, the largest digital exhibition space in Europe.
The focal point is a captivating alternative Tube map guiding readers through the city's many live venues, artists you need to see in 2025, record shops, historic locations, and independent labels.
Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden, Skin from Skunk Anansie, Billy Bragg, Charlie Steen from Shame and Prima Queen are among the acts who have backed the campaign and given their views on the importance of a thriving grassroots scene.
Almost 330,000 performances were held at 179 grassroots music venues in London attended by around 4.3million people last year, according to the Music Venue Trust (MVT).
But the trust's founder, Mark Davyd, warned the costs of running these venues has 'absolutely exploded' over the last five years.
The nighttime economy suffered a further blow on Wednesday after The Leadmill in Sheffield lost its fight against eviction, prompting Liam Gallagher to brand the decision 'scandalous'.

Matt says councils, the government, and larger venues need to be working together to help smaller venues and preserve the city's grassroots heritage.
He said: 'Without smaller venues, you're not going to be able to grow artists to a point where they can actually go and play the O2 or Brixton Academy, or Hammersmith, or the Forum. Everybody needs to pull together because it's really tough.
'We read about a venue a month having to do a Crowdfunder – basically having to beg to survive. The future is definitely in a turbulent place thanks to everything that's happened over the past five years, and probably longer.
'Now is the point when people need to come together. It almost feels the onus is on music fans to help save venues, which is wrong. It should be the music industry that leads the way.'

One of Matt's stand out gig memories was the last show at the Astoria – the iconic live venue on Charing Cross Road that closed its doors in 2009. Organised by Sam Duckworth from Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly, the event was a riotous affair.
Matt added: 'After the show, they opened the backstage bit you don't often get to see as a fan. Someone came on stage and said 'everything's got to go because they're knocking the place down'.
'People were ripping old school telephones out of the wall, taking them as mementos. I've got crazy memories like that. '

One Direction star returns to stage 10 months after bandmate Liam Payne's death

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Niall Horan made a triumphant return to the stage this weekend, much to the surprise of fans—especially since it wasn't even his gig. The Irish pop star and boyband heartthrob hasn't performed live in 10 months, having wrapped up his The Show world tour in Bogota, Colombia, last autumn before embarking on a hiatus. That same month, Niall and his One Direction bandmates – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik – were left heartbroken when Liam Payne died at the tender age of 31. Niall had spent time with Payne just weeks earlier when the Strip That Down hitmaker attended his concert in Argentina, not long before his fatal fall from a hotel balcony on October 16. Having taken some time away from the music scene following his late friend's funeral, Niall, 31, came back with a bang last night, stepping out onto a stage he's performed countless times: London's O2 Arena. He was a special guest for long-time friend and fellow music superstar Shawn Mendes, 27, who brought his On The Road Again tour to the capital. Celebrating hits from his decade in the industry, the Grammy-nominated Canadian songwriter was met with deafening screams upon introducing Niall to the crowd. Teasing Niall's arrival, Shawn began on the mic: 'I met this fella years and years ago; I was probably 16 or 17. 'I came into this industry, and I was terrified of everything and everyone. We talk a lot of s**t, but this man has been an older brother to me.' He declared sweetly: 'I love him with all my heart. Please welcome Niall Horan.' Naturally, the packed venue went wild, as footage later shared to Shawn's Instagram captured. Fans immediately burst into tears, jumped up and down, and shook their heads in disbelief as the Slow Hands vocalist made his way out, guitar in hand, of course. 'I'll remember this for a long time ❤️ Thank you so much London x', Shawn's caption read, with Niall commenting a red heart also. Together, they performed Niall's debut solo single, This Town, which was released after 1D's sabbatical began in 2016. Thanking the crowd before leaving the stage, Niall professed his love for Shawn and said: 'Take care, everyone.' As the video of the wholesome moment began doing the rounds online, fans were quick to express their excitement and plead with the celebrity pals for a proper collaboration. 'Best duo ever 🤍. We need a collab please? ❤️🙏', @niallxupdates_ commented on Instagram. 'OMG! Niall and Shawn together 😍🔥 So beautiful!', wrote @rashelhemmings. 'I didn't even realize how much I missed his voice. 💖', added Niall fan @_fatbirdsinging. @xoanyushka joked: 'i had the most normal reaction to this (i screamed)'. This is not the first time Niall and Shawn have duetted as, during Niall's lat tour, Shawn made a surprise appearance for a joint rendition of his hit Treat You Better. Meanwhile, today, Niall supporters further shared their pride at seeing him back where he belongs following his loss. Following Payne's shocking death, his bandmates all released devastating statements in tribute, with Niall taking to social media to say what had happened didn't 'feel real'. 'Liam had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious,' he wrote. 'He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure. 'All the laughs we had over the years, sometimes about the simplest of things, keep coming to mind through the sadness. We got to live out our wildest dreams together and I will cherish every moment we had forever. 'The bond and friendship we had doesn't happen often in a lifetime.' Niall went on to send his condolences to Payne's young son, Bear, whom he shared with pop star Cheryl, and the star's family. 'I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently,' he concluded. 'I sadly didn't know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever. It's heartbreaking.' More Trending Niall sweetly signed off: 'Thank you for everything, Payno.' As well as his parents and two sisters, Payne is survived by his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. The circumstances surrounding his death have been investigated intently by police in recent months, resulting in five individuals being arrested in connection, among whom were a friend of Payne, the hotel manager, two employees, and a waiter. After months of proceedings, the latest is that three have been acquitted and two remain under suspicion. Got a story? Period drama branded ‘fantastic' streaming on Netflix

The 2023 period drama All The Light We Cannot See is currently streaming on Netflix UK. The limited series tells the story of a blind French teenager Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) and a German soldier (Louis Hofmann) who attempt to weather the devastation of World War II together. It also stars Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie in supporting roles, as Daniel and Etienne LeBlanc; Marie-Laure's father and uncle, respectively. Based on the Pulitzer prize winning novel by Anthony Doerr, it was picked up for adaptation by Netflix in 2019, with Free Guy filmmaker Shawn Levy attached to direct and Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight on screenplay duties. All four episodes were first added to the streaming service in November 2023, where they remain to this day. Since its release, viewers have responded to its emotional story and powerful performances from its leading pair. All The Light We Cannot See currently boasts an 81% positive audience score on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with Asha B describing it as 'a show with substance and depth.' Meanwhile, user C W called it 'simply fantastic,' and 'a beautiful piece of storytelling.' 'Excellent series. Ruff also is fantastic and the cinematography is wonderful,' said Bad B. Helen W described it as: 'A beautiful story albeit told without compromise,' adding 'you should watch!' Critics were more divided on the adaptation, contributing to a 28% 'rotten' score, although most praised its production values and cinematography. 'All the Light We Cannot See starts off strong and will keep viewers engaged from the beginning until the very end,' wrote Ready Steady Cut. It's worth watching for Loberti's outstanding performance and the generally impressive production value,' said Paste Magazine, while bemoaning that it 'could have been so much more.' Meanwhile, NPR called it 'worthwhile and heartening.' The show marks the acting debut of Aria Mia Loberti, who is herself, legally blind. 'When you decide, as I did, to open up the casting process to low vision and legally blind contenders for this protagonist, who is herself blind, it's not like you can go the usual route,' director Levy told Town & Country Magazine. 'It's not like the talent agencies have filled their rosters with actors who are blind; it's not a big pool. That's why I opened it up with a global casting search announced in a blitz, and we got hundreds and hundreds of self-tapes from people who just filmed an audition on their laptop or their phone. 'Among those, I noticed one from a young woman named Aria Mia Loberti, and while at that point I didn't know anything about her, I knew that there was something about her that popped,' the Deadpool & Wolverine director added. 'What was difficult was being a first-time actress,' said Loberti of her debut performance. More Trending 'I had never been on a set before and that was the challenge. I brought a lot from my day-to-day life—my ballet training and martial arts training—with me to the stunts. 'I got to do all the stunts except for driving the car. Having Shawn as my guide was amazing and I am grateful to him for believing in me.' View More » All The Light We Cannot See is currently streaming on Netflix UK. Got a story?
