Rose Mary is consistently one of the city's hottest dining destinations, and this past week, there was extra buzz at the restaurant for a special one-night-only dinner with Cane Pazzo of Charleston, South Carolina. The evening showcased a collaborative menu by local culinary celeb and Top Chef winner Joe Flamm and Cane Pazzo's Mark Bolchoz. Given both chefs' pedigrees in Italian cuisine, it was no surprise that the meal felt like a cohesive vision. The standout course arrived early — a plate of coppa topped with grilled pepper and artichoke relish, and parmesan. It was accompanied by grilled focaccia, and every bite was a reminder that sometimes, quality ingredients shine brightest with the simplest preparations. Traversing the 606, or Bloomingdale Trail, is an easy and surefire way to work up an appetite. Luckily for Chicagoans, a new restaurant and marketplace recently opened just steps away from the path on Western Avenue. Wolf & Company is the latest project from the team behind Little Bad Wolf and Gretel, and it certainly has potential. The bi-level space features a restaurant, marketplace, and deli on the first floor, and a breezy second-floor cafe and lounge with plenty of outdoor seating. The menu offers a selection of pizzas, sandwiches, and approachable items like wings and steak frites. But for those who have been to Wolf & Company's older siblings, you probably already know the burgers are fantastic. Well, I'm happy to report that the newcomer's offering is similarly noteworthy. I opted for the double-patty — triple-patty and single-patty mini burgers are also available — and it delivered the salty, umami-rich flavor bomb I was expecting. The burger is dressed with charred onion aioli, pickles, and cheese, and though it doesn't really need much else, you can add optional toppings like an egg, bacon, or fried onion straws. And hey, if you feel a food coma coming on after devouring the burger and a generous helping of curly fries, there's always a 2.7-mile trail nearby to help walk it off. — J.M.

Union Dumpling House isn't for lingering. Customers order from a pair of touchscreen terminals near the entrance and are given a number while workers furiously prepare their chosen dumplings. There are a few flat screens that play an advertisement for the restaurant on a loop, and the acting is magnificent, showing us that dumplings are nutritious, delicious, and suitable for any multicultural group of customers. Theatrics aside, the dumplings are solid and can go toe to toe with any spot in Chinatown. While there are meatier options available, I love the chance to fool my toddler into eating vegetables, and the mixed mushroom and veggie option rose to the occasion. Truth be told, I liked the veggie selection better than lamb, pork, and shrimp selections. Not to say that carnivores won't be happy, but I was quite pleased with the texture of the mushrooms. You could taste the veggies; they weren't some cheap stuffing meant to emulate meat, which is a pet peeve of mine. This spot is good for a quick meal. Breakfast isn't one of my favorite meals. I'd rather grab a protein bar or smoothie and run out the door. Eggs have never been something I look forward to eating. But I've softened over the years and realized a good egg sandwich isn't so bad. Kasama raised the stakes with its Fil-Am classic, as seen on that award-winning comedy on Hulu. Several have since entered the ring, inspired by the combo of eggs and longanissa. Which brings me to Sarima, a new Wicker Park bakery where South Asian and Filipino flavors mingle. For those who don't eat pork, a cohort that includes religious Muslims and vegetarians, breakfast, breakfast sandwiches don't always satisfy, especially as you smell the wonderful aroma of bacon. But it's 2025, and we have the technology. At Sarima, they make bacon tocino out of chicken with outstanding results. The breakfast sandwich, perched on a potato bun, is a quality morning meal with a little pep thanks to a sweet and sour achaar aioli. You can customize it, but the crispy hash brown patty is something. Yes, I feel bad I haven't ordered the dosa yet. But I'll probably ask them to add some of that tocino to really rile up the vegetarian ancestors. At Sarima, Ice Cube gets what he's always wanted: Breakfast with no hog. — A.S.

The 'new' Wagner Park in Battery Park City opened this week after a two-year closure and a nearly $300 million redesign. But New Yorkers should howl to the moon — and to the state legislature in Albany — over the desecration of a public jewel, done to suit the agenda of environmental zealots egged on by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. It's the most rotten Lower Manhattan scam since hustlers sold 'tickets' to the free Staten Island Ferry — only the warped park's victims aren't tourists but Wagner Park's millions of annual users, most of them New Yorkers. The original Wagner Park, near Battery Park City's southern tip, opened in 1996 to universal acclaim. New York Times architectural critic Paul Goldberger called it 'one of the finest public spaces New York has seen in at least a generation.' Advertisement 7 Wagner Park's once-level, river-facing side swelled into a stepped cliff of wooden, bleacher-like seats in an effort to prevent flooding that some feel went too far. Tamara Beckwith Battery Park City residents as well as New Yorkers from every part of town and tourists agreed. They fell in love with the 3.5-acre oasis' peaceful, river-fronting lawns that were ideal for sunbathing and taking in views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty. A popular Italian restaurant buzzed indoors and outdoors with happy sun-worshippers and sightseers. Now, they're all gone in the name of 'saving' the park from a mythical flood that exists only in its designers' imaginations. Advertisement The state-controlled Battery Park City Authority is, naturally, trying to cosmeticize the debacle with promises of future outdoor arts programs and hype over four planted 'ecological zones' that merely take space away from the original lawns. We're meant to be impressed by an 'integrated flood barrier system' that 'maximizes water capture and reuse,' a 63,000-gallon underground cistern for rainwater reuse, 'flip-up deployables' (whatever they are), sustainable materials, native plantings and 'lush gardens planted with native, salt-resistant species.' 7 The park's central area was elevated 10 feet in order to conceal a buried flood wall. Novelist Jon Pepper, a Battery Park City resident, said the new pavilion — slightly larger than the original one and relocated to the east — 'looks like bunkers on the Maginot Line,' a reference to France's WWII defense that failed to stop the Nazi advance. Say this for the builders: They delivered, on time and within budget, precisely the lousy product that BPCA brochures promised. Mature London plane trees were uprooted. But it's effectively much smaller due to the way it's segmented into landscaped portions that aren't conducive to lazing and lolling. The modest concession building on the park's eastern side gave way to a lumbering red-brick structure that looms over the lawns' remnants like an intergalactic invader. 7 New Yorkers fell in love with the 3.5-acre former oasis' peaceful, river-fronting lawns that were ideal for sunbathing and taking in views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty. Gabriella Bass The BPCA put out a 'request for proposals' to operate a two-level, 5,000-square-foot restaurant — one-third larger than previous license holder Gigino's. The greater number of seats, combined with the pavilion's 'community center' and rooftop viewing area, will shatter Wagner Park's low-key ambience that was at the heart of its charm. How did this all happen? Advertisement Besides enriching a legion of architects, engineers and landscape designers, the mutant 'park' is supposed to protect against a theoretical, worse-than-worst case, one-day-or-someday '100-year' flood caused by rising sea levels. In fact, no such catastrophe has ever occurred. The original park was so securely engineered that Wagner Park suffered no damage whatsoever when superstorm Sandy caused the city's highest sea level rise ever recorded. 7 Locals led a fight to save the old Wagner Park that ultimately failed. Gabriella Bass All of landfill-based Battery Park City was designed to withstand any conceivable high water. Which was why, as New York Magazine reported and illustrated, the entire three-mile long complex 'shone brightly' after Sandy while most of the rest of Manhattan was dark. Local residents fought fiercely against losing their beloved oasis, but in the end, the 'resiliency' lobby of climate-change alarmists carried the day. Of course, New Yorkers don't want a woke lesson in saving the earth. They want a park easy to love — which, at Wagner Park, will live only in memory.

Actor Miles Teller and television personality Andy Cohen were among the tens of thousands of Deadheads flowing through Golden Gate Park last weekend to celebrate the lasting legacy of the Grateful Dead. The two were photographed together during one of Dead & Company's sold-out shows at the Polo Field, posing with black sunglasses against the backdrop of the event's packed crowd. Cohen, host of Bravo's late-night talk show 'Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,' wore a yellow and grey tie dye hoodie, while the ' Top Gun: Maverick ' star had on a white T-shirt and denim jacket. The image was shared by internet personality Maurice Aouad on Tuesday, Aug. 5, as part of a carousel of film photos that he took over the three-day outdoor event, which kicked off Friday, Aug. 1, with bluegrass musician Billy Strings as the opening act. Cohen reposted the image to his Instagram story later that day. Another photo of Cohen and Teller at Golden Gate Park, shared to Instagram by the New York Post's Page Six on Monday, Aug. 4, shows the two taking a selfie amid the crowd, with the stage behind them. The caption notes that the image came from Cohen's Instagram account, but his post seems to have expired since then. It is unclear if they attended all three of Dead & Company's San Francisco concerts, but the two photos appear to have been taken on the same day. Both Teller and Cohen have never been subtle about their Deadheads status. Cohen even has a Highlight saved to his Instagram profile titled 'Grateful Stuff,' filled with archived story posts of his experiences at Dead & Company concerts. Teller previously revealed that fans sent him Grateful Dead T-shirts after he and his wife, Keleigh Sperry Teller, lost their Los Angeles home to the Palisades fire at the start of the year. He also recounted a "spiritual experience' that he had while watching Grateful Dead founding member Bob Weir perform during college. 'From then on, that was it,' Teller told NME Magazine. 'I was sold.' The historic weekend celebrated the legacy of the Bay Area jam band and its members, old and new. Festivities kicked off Thursday, July 31, with the Heart of Town concert series. The three-night event was organized by Grahame Lesh, son of late Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, and featured appearances by Dallas musician Stephen Stills, Los Angeles folk rock group Dawes and Melvin Seals, longtime member of the Jerry Garcia Band . A number of free celebrations took place in tandem, from the open-air, city-sanctioned Shakedown Street market to the Jerry Garcia Street naming event and Dead drummer Mickey Hart's ' Art at the Edge of Magic ' exhibition at Haight Street Art Center.

Nancy Silverton's Korean-Italian Pasta Bar Should Open This Fall in Koreatown

is an editor of the Southern California/Southwest region, who covers the evolving landscape of LA's food scene. Nancy Silverton's next Los Angeles restaurant is opening in Koreatown this fall. Lapaba, a new restaurant blending Italian and Korean cooking, is set to debut in October 2025 on the corner of Sixth Street and Western Avenue. Silverton first announced the restaurant on the February 20 episode of How Long Gone, a podcast hosted by Chris Black and Jason Stewart. The name is a portmanteau of 'la pasta bar,' a language device often used in Korean; other examples include 'somaek,' which combines soju and maekju (beer), and mukbang, a blend of meokneun (eating) and bangsong (broadcast). Husband-and-wife chef team McKenna Lelah and Matthew Kim, who met while working at Osteria Mozza under Silverton, will lead the kitchen at Lapaba. After Osteria Mozza, Kim went on to work at Alinea's sister restaurant, Next, while Lelah worked with chef Tim Hollingworth. The duo later worked together to open Dave Beran's Michelin-starred Dialogue, before Kim joined Pasjoli as chef de cuisine. Kim also made cannabis edibles for some with Oui'd Confection before shuttering the brand in May 2025. At Lapaba, expect classic Italian dishes with Korean twists, like kimchi suppli stuffed with Spam and mozzarella, and a little gem Caesar with doenjang. Pastas, which will be made on site in a dedicated pasta room, comprise dishes like cappelletti in a galbi brodo with mandu filling and campanella with basil and perilla pesto. Bucatini all'Amatriciana sauce will add in jjagang (Korean black bean paste), while tonnarelli comes with clams, garlic, and braised kombu. Desserts include Tiramisu-Garu, made with misugari and makgeolli, shaved ice, and soft serve. The interior, which features a curved stone bar looking into an open kitchen, was designed and fabricated in Italy by Costa. Silverton will open the restaurant with partners Robert Kim (Norikaya, AB Steak, Mama Lion), and siblings Tanya and Joe Bastianich, who are also co-owners at Osteria Mozza, Chi Spacca, and Mozza2Go. Joe Bastianich is also a co-owner of Eataly, where he worked with Mario Batali under their restaurant group, B&B Hospitality. Batali has since been removed from the group after several employees alleged sexual misconduct in 2015, and the name has since been changed to Pasta Resources. At the time of the investigation, the New York state attorney general found that both men were responsible for the toxic environment, and the group was ordered to pay $600,000 in a settlement. Lapaba will open with dinner service from Wednesday to Saturday, with plans to expand to lunch later on. Lapaba is set to open in October 2025 at 558 S. Western Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90020.
