From The Times: April 29, 1925
'Holland's greatest actor' was the title universally bestowed by his compatriots on the Dutch tragedian Mr Louis Bouwmeester, who has died at the age of 82.
As long ago as the Eighties of the nineteenth century, Bouwmeester's fame reached England as the first actor of the Dutch stage. He held the distinction, therefore, and held it undisputedly for more than forty years. Mr Bouwmeester's position in the forefront of Continental actors was recognized in France and Germany, and probably in America, some time before it was realized in England. 'Even his stick talks,' said a celebrated French critic, while leaders of the Paris stage hailed him as 'Master'.
Bouwmeester, indeed, occupied a place in a constellation of eminent players

Madame Tussauds unveils 13 wax statues of Taylor Swift: an attempt to return to the golden age?

Driven by the singer's immense popularity, the museum devoted unprecedented resources to the project. It now stands as the largest endeavour in Madame Tussauds' 250-year history. The choice of 13 figures is deliberate: for long-time fans, the number holds special meaning as Swift's self-professed lucky number. Previously, the museum has honoured figures such as Lady Gaga in 2011 and Harry Styles in 2023. Learn more: Behind the spotlight: 'Sound designer' – the architects of hearing in the world of cinema The recreation of Swift's Eras Tour costumes is also seen as a canny move. The tour itself became a worldwide phenomenon, achieving milestones few artists can rival. Even after its conclusion, fans continue to relive and share its most iconic moments across social media. The wax statues, each themed to a different era, have tapped directly into this enduring devotion. To deliver a memorable experience for fans, Madame Tussauds has carefully recreated key moments from The Eras Tour . Each wax figure captures a signature pose from the show. From 25 July 2025, visitors can view the collection at Madame Tussauds locations in Hollywood, Las Vegas, New York, Orlando and Nashville. The museum also plans to bring a Taylor Swift wax figure to its Shanghai location, ensuring Swifties in Asia have the chance to meet their idol, albeit in lifelike wax. 13 Taylor Swift wax figures: an attempt to reclaim Madame Tussauds' glory? On social media, Swifties across the globe are animatedly discussing the 13 wax figures unveiled by Madame Tussauds. Posts from the museum related to this topic have garnered significant interaction from Taylor Swift's devoted fanbase. With her name and immense cultural pull, the project is expected to drive strong commercial results for Madame Tussauds. It also appears to reflect a broader strategy from Merlin Entertainments, the group behind the Madame Tussauds brand, to recapture public interest following a quieter spell. Madame Tussauds was established in London during the 19th century by Marie Tussaud, a French artist renowned for her waxworks. King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were among the first historical figures to be immortalised by her hand. Praised for their uncanny likeness, the figures swiftly elevated Madame Tussauds to the status of cultural landmark. Over the years, personalities from across the globe and spanning various fields have been featured in its collections. However, with the rise of digital technology, social media, and an increasingly connected world, fans today have greater access to their idols than ever before. As a result, even though the wax statues remain detailed and thoughtfully produced, they no longer command the same level of public fascination. Revenue, primarily driven by ticket sales, has seen a gradual decline, mirroring the drop in visitor numbers in recent years. In this light, the unveiling of 13 Taylor Swift figures is positioned as a revitalisation effort. It aims to boost brand visibility for Madame Tussauds among a broader and more engaged audience, while also driving commercial success. Beyond that, the project further underscores Taylor Swift's enduring influence not only in music, but as a defining cultural figure of her time.
