Man fined RM1,000 for assault in jealousy-fuelled attack
Magistrate Mohamed Redza Azhar Rezali imposed the fine on C. Haritharan, 30, who was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to S. Sargunaraj.
The offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a maximum penalty of one year's jail, a RM2,000 fine, or both upon conviction.
He was accused of committing the offence at about 2.15am in an apartment unit in Taman Puchong Intan on May 24.
Deputy public prosecutor Alia Anisa Khairus Masnan urged the court to impose a heavy penalty as a deterrent.
In mitigation, lawyer M. Partiben pleaded for a minimal fine for his client, who is single, an orphan, and earns RM1,500 a month.
"He is remorseful and apologises for his actions," he said.
In a separate magistrate's court, Haritharan's uncle, N. Selva Raj, 36, claimed trial to a charge of assaulting Sargunaraj with a glass marble used as a weapon, at the same time and location.
Selva, a lorry driver, entered his plea before magistrate Muhammad Syafiq Sulaiman.
The charge, framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 10 years, or a fine, or whipping.
The prosecution proposed a RM4,000 bail.
In mitigation, lawyer Mohd Safwan Saleh said the amount was too high for Selva, who earns RM2,300 a month.
"His family cannot afford the suggested bail. I request bail be set at around RM2,000," he said.
The court fixed bail at RM2,500 and ordered Selva not to harass witnesses.
Mention was set for July 29.

Nasi lemak seller claims trial to extortion charge over nude photos
GEORGE TOWN: A nasi lemak seller was charged at the magistrate's court here today with extortion by threatening to distribute nude photos of a man he met on a same-sex dating app last week. S. Chandran, 35, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before magistrate Muhammad Amzar Ismail. Chandran is charged with committing extortion by causing fear in Mohamad Hanif Hamid, 33, that his nude photos would be shared. The act prompted the victim to transfer a total of RM8,400 in cash to the accused online. He is alleged to have committed the offence at a residential unit on Jalan Kelawai here, between 2am and 11.30am on July 22. The charge was framed under Section 384 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of 10 years, a fine, whipping, or any two of the punishments upon conviction. During the proceeding, deputy public prosecutor Syairah Aqilah Khalil told the court that the offence was non-bailable. "However, I leave it to the discretion of the court. "If bail is granted, we request that additional conditions be imposed," she said. The accused's counsel, A. Mahesh, requested minimum bail, citing that his client was a nasi lemak seller and needed to care for his elderly mother. "He also suffers from breathing problems that require treatment at Penang Hospital. "With a permanent address in Penang, he is of no flight risk. "He has been cooperative from the very beginning by voluntarily surrendering himself at the police station to assist with the investigation," he added. The court then allowed the accused bail of RM3,500 with one surety. The court also imposed an additional condition prohibiting the accused from disturbing the victim until the case is resolved. The court set Sept 2 for mention and document submission.

Gang busted over theft of TM assets worth RM80k
SUNGAI PETANI: A criminal group known as "Geng Ali", believed to be behind a string of thefts of Telekom Malaysia (TM) assets worth RM80,000, was crippled with the arrests of two of its members recently. The suspects, aged 24 and 27, were detained on July 23 during a targeted police operation launched in response to a surge in infrastructure thefts which caused widespread internet disruptions in the district. Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said police seized 29 stolen TM cabinet cards and a box of similar components in a white sack in the operation. "The group typically targets TM substations before selling the components to scrap dealers. "These thefts have not only caused about RM80,000 in losses to TM but also affected internet access for users in the area," Hanyan said in a press conference at the district police headquarters today. Initial checks found one suspect had three previous offences, including drug-related and criminal cases, while the other had 14 records including eight for criminal offences and six involving drugs. The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a sentence of up to seven years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction. In a separate matter, police have issued 41,070 traffic summonses in Kuala Muda from January 1 to July 30 this year. A total of 974 summonses were issued for red-light violations during major traffic operations throughout the district.

Ford Ranger driver slammed for tailgating to avoid paying toll
WHILE most Malaysians dutifully pay tolls, a few drivers are determined to dodge the fee — even if it means endangering others on the road. A Ford Ranger driver has gone viral on TikTok after being caught tailgating another vehicle to sneak through a toll booth without paying. In the 13-second clip, the four-wheel drive (4WD) can be seen driving dangerously close behind a car before accelerating to slip past the boom gate. Once through, the vehicle slows down and continues on its way. ALSO READ: Netizens ashamed for Lamborghini Aventador driver who avoided paying the toll 'Bro thought the toll was already free as announced by the government,' read the sarcastic caption on the video. Based on the dashcam clip, the incident is believed to have taken place at 10.54pm on July 25. The post has since racked up over 180 comments, with many slamming the driver for refusing to pay a small toll fee — despite owning a vehicle worth RM100,000 to RM200,000. One user remarked, 'Drives an expensive car but can't pay the toll.' Another quipped, 'Pity him — all his money went into the car. Now there's not even enough left to pay toll. What about food money?' A third chimed in, 'All his money's gone to monthly car payments.' Meanwhile, Faiz Hamid didn't hold back: 'Shameful to drive such a big car and still skip the toll. 'Might as well drive a sardine can, bro.'
