Lake Tahoe inspectors find golden mussels in a boat in Alpine Meadows
According to officials, this is the first interception of the new invasive species by Lake Tahoe watercraft inspectors since the first acknowledgment in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta back in 2024.
In May, golden mussels found their way to Folsom Lake and were discovered during a boat inspection.
'Golden mussels pose an extreme threat to Lake Tahoe and the waters of the region, and it is critical that everyone stay vigilant and always Clean, Drain, and Dry all watercraft and equipment when visiting new areas,' said Dennis Zabaglo, aquatic invasive species program manager for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. 'We are fortunate to have such highly trained inspectors and committed partners at marinas and boat ramps, but protecting the waters of the Tahoe Region from the spread of aquatic invasive species takes all of us.'

TRPA and the Tahoe Resource Convention District manage the Lake Tahoe Watercraft Inspection Program, which helped to strengthen the inspection procedures in March in response to the golden mussel discovery just a few hours away from the Tahoe Basin, according to authorities.
Inspectors said that crews at the Alpine Meadows station conducted an initial decontamination of the 65-foot boat and placed it under quarantine under the California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations until the boat is safe.
The managers of the Watercraft Inspection Program have been working with the Nevada Division of Wildlife and other state agencies to share information on all detections with agencies in both states and the western U.S., officials said.
'With the support of boaters and paddlers, we have kept Lake Tahoe safe from many invasive species, but the survivability of golden mussel and their proximity to Tahoe make them a greater threat than other aquatic invasive species,' Killian said. 'The Lake Tahoe inspection program has become a national model because it is so comprehensive. The move to mandatory decontaminations this year was a crucial step to continue protecting the waters of the Tahoe Region for all to enjoy.'
According to the inspectors, as new threats come to Lake Tahoe, the emphasis on following clear, drain, and dry protocol remains for all boaters, paddlers, anglers, and beachgoers.
Sacramento's Track 7 Brewing Company announced its closures effective Saturday
Tahoe RCD Aquatic Invasive Species Program Manager Chris Killian said that the golden mussels are not in the lake, so following the clean, drain, and dry protocol will help to lessen the risk of invasion.
Authorities stated that since the discovery of golden mussels in the port of Stockton, they have been discovered as far south as Bakersfield through the connected water system. The areas outside the Tahoe Region have responded to the threat by standing up prevention programs, temporary waterbody closures, and 30-day quarantine periods in some areas.

Necropsy results released after whale struck boat in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center on Monday released the preliminary necropsy of the whale that died in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, after striking a boat over the weekend. The MMSC, Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and Cornell University conducted a necropsy, an animal autopsy, on the minke whale that was stranded in Barnegat Bay on Saturday. The whale was 26 feet, 4 inches long and confirmed to be an adult female. The MMSC said the whale's body condition was thin. It also had "superficial cuts" externally and "bruising present in the blubber and muscle in the areas of trauma on the dorsal side." "GI tract was empty with very little digestive material present, and a scant amount of fecal matter," the MMSC wrote. "Lesions were present in the stomach." At the end of the necropsy, the whale was buried on the beach. The MMSC said the other biological samples collected were sent to a pathologist for further analysis. After the whale struck the boat on Saturday afternoon, a passenger went overboard and fell into the Double Creek Channel of Barnegat Bay. No injuries were reported among the boat's passengers.

Mission accomplished" Timberlake shared the news about his recent diagnosis with fans on July 31Justin Timberlake is spending his time relaxing at home, following the end of his two-year Forget Tomorrow World Tour and his Lyme disease diagnosis. In an Instagram Stories photo posted on Monday, Aug. 4, the NSYNC alum, 44, could be seen posing in a sweatshirt that reads: "I'm not doing s--- today. Mission accomplished," as he sticks his tongue out for the camera. Related: Timberlake shared the news about his Lyme disease diagnosis with fans in his Instagram Stories and in his feed on Thursday, July 31. "I've been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease — which I don't say so you feel bad for me — but to shed some light on what I've been up against behind the scenes," the 'SexyBack' singer wrote. "If you've experienced this disease or know someone who has — then you're aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically." Transmitted from the bite of an infected tick, Lyme disease can cause flu-like symptoms such as headaches, joint pain, fatigue, or a fever, per the Cleveland Clinic. It's often diagnosed by a rash resembling a bullseye around on the tick bite, and can be confirmed with a Lyme disease blood test. The announcement came just as he ended the Forget Tomorrow World Tour. Earlier in the tour, Timberlake canceled or postponed various shows due to an ongoing back injury, bronchitis and laryngitis, and an ankle injury. "He's not 20 anymore. But when his symptoms worsened, he realized something deeper was going on," the source said. "He pushed through for months before finally getting answers. The Lyme disease diagnosis brought clarity to a series of unexplained issues that he's been quietly dealing with." As the insider explained, Timberlake's focus is now on treatment and recovery following the conclusion of his tour. "He's taking it seriously. The plan is to rest, spend time with Jess and the kids and do everything he can to heal," the family source said of the couple, who are parents to sons Silas, 10, and Phineas, 5. "He loved touring and being back onstage, but he's also relieved it's over. Now he can focus on his health." Read the original article on People
