Concert review: Mysterious J-pop star Ado anchors sold-out Singapore show with stunning voice
Ado World Tour 2025 Hibana
Singapore Indoor Stadium
May 21
A girl in a box, with a stunning voice.
That is, in essence, the short version of what went down at J-pop singer Ado's first concert in Singapore.
The long version is that the mysterious 22-year-old star's sold-out gig at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on May 21 was one of the most unique shows this reviewer has seen.
Aside from her age and gender, little is known about Ado.
Despite being one of the biggest Japanese music artistes of the moment - she is the first female soloist to play Japan's National Stadium with two sold-out shows in 2024 that saw over 140,000 attendees - she has never revealed her face.
Only her silhouette is seen when she performs live, while obscured within a translucent cube.
It was also how she appeared at her Singapore show, which was sponsored by anime-centric streamer Crunchyroll.
And while she may be physically constricted, her voice knows no bounds.
Ado kicked off the two-hour show with her debut number Usseewa (2020), an angst-ridden teenage rant against what is deemed to be 'proper' adult behaviour and 'social mores', which served as a jaw-dropping display of her vocals.
While she is a J-pop idol, her style of singing more closely resembles heavy metal rockers, and she punctuated Usseewa with explosive shrieks and angry screams.
Her vocals were excellent throughout - working as an instrument and performer on its own merit. She switched between whispers and clean high notes effortlessly and with control, taking only a few brief breaks between songs. Her voice conveyed the emotions of her repertoire well too, desperate and crazed on songs like Aishite Aishite Aishite (2023), and rousing and anthemic on the banger Rockstar (2025).
She also covered the hit song Chandelier (2014), no doubt a way of paying respect to Australian singer-songwriter Sia, who was also known for obscuring her face.
And although only an outline of her could be seen, Ado was a very active performer, flipping her high ponytail around, dancing and belting her heart out.
Props must also be given to the set design. With its star literally trapped in a cage, the show relied heavily on its lighting, which framed the stage, and digital screen visuals to create immersive scenes for the audience.
The National Stadium next door might have played host to a dance party that was the third night of American pop star Lady Gaga's Mayhem concerts, but Ado brought a rave to her equally adoring fans.
With laser beams and rotating lights, her show alternated between what felt like immersive video game scenes and psychedelic dreamscapes. It was disorienting - in a good way.
Towards the finale, Ado lamented that she had yet to see the Merlion or swim in the infinity pool atop Marina Bay Sands, drawing some laughs from the crowd.
She then launched into an earnest speech about how glad she was to stand onstage in front of overseas audiences, when she used to be just a little girl singing so loudly in her closet that she annoyed her mother.
Her final song was one of her most famous hits and an anime favourite. New Genesis is the theme song for the anime movie One Piece Film: Red (2022), and the first Japanese song to top the Global 100 playlist on Apple Music.
Ado has come a long way since singing alone in her room, proving that her powerful hard rock and metal-inspired vocal stylings can win over legions of young pop music fans.
While she may not be to everyone's tastes, one cannot deny the impressive voice, technique and stage presence she possesses.

Actor Masaharu Fukuyama ‘regrets' sexual remarks to female Fuji TV employees
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox TOKYO - Renowned Japanese singer-actor Masaharu Fukuyama has acknowledged making sexual remarks to female employees of Fuji TV at events that a third-party panel on misconduct at the broadcaster had deemed inappropriate, according to a report in a weekly magazine published on Aug 18. Fukuyama, who holds the sales record for singles and albums as a solo male artiste over his 35-year career and is also popular in other Asian countries, said he 'deeply regrets' the conduct in an interview with Josei Seven magazine. The revelations come at a time when Japan's entertainment industry has come under scrutiny over a series of sexual misconduct cases, including at Fuji TV, a major commercial broadcaster. Fukuyama, 56, said on his official website that he gave the interview 'so that there won't be misunderstandings' regarding his remarks to female staff at events arranged by a former top official of Fuji TV, a subsidiary of Fuji Media Holdings. The events were detailed in a report the panel compiled in March in response to a scandal involving popular former TV host Masahiro Nakai's alleged sexual assault of a female former employee of Fuji TV. The report said the functions were arranged by former managing director Toru Ota once or twice a year since around 2005 and involved a 'major male TV programme participant'. In the magazine interview, Fukuyama, who acknowledged he was the participant, said: 'I hope my apologies will reach those who were offended.' Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. One of the women described exchanges with Fukuyama as unpleasant and involving lewd comments. The panel hoped to hold an in-person hearing but was only provided a written response to queries, with Fukuyama citing a busy schedule. In the written responses, Fukuyama had said he 'never' made sexual comments to the women. A Fuji TV official said on Aug 18 that the broadcaster has 'not confirmed a report of harassment by Mr Fukuyama'. The panel's report found a female Fuji TV employee was subjected to sexual violence by Nakai, 53, in June 2023 'as an extension of her job'. Nakai, who rose to prominence as a member of the now-defunct J-pop group Smap, retired from show business after the allegations came to light. The latest development comes before the September release of Black Showman, a film starring Fukuyama as the lead character, with Fuji TV among its producers. Fukuyama debuted as a singer-songwriter in 1990 and his best-known songs include Sakura Zaka (2000). He has regularly appeared in a popular New Year's Eve music show aired by public broadcaster NHK, often serving as its headliner. Fukuyama also became famous across Asia after starring in Japanese TV series such as Under The Same Roof (1993 to 1997) and Galileo (2007 to 2013). He also starred in Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda's film Like Father, Like Son (2013), which received the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival. KYODO NEWS

K-pop girl group StayC prove they can do more than cute concepts at Singapore concert , Entertainment News
They may be known for their cute concepts, but at their Singapore concert on Aug 16 held at The Star Theatre, it was clear K-pop girl group StayC can excel at much more. The 2.5-hour show started with Bebe, a funky house tune with a catchy beat. Not just a more mature sound for the sextet, the song also has a choreography that showed StayC don't need a signature move to get the audience's attention. After introducing themselves, Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon, and J explained that they chose Bebe - released in March this year - as their opening song as it fit their concert tour theme Stay Tuned. "We took too long to come back," remarked 23-year-old Isa. They were last here in February 2024 for the Teenfresh tour. [embed] While their 2023 single Teddy Bear and subsequent album Teenfresh was bubblegum pop, their recent album Metamorphic explores new sounds and showcases a different side of StayC, and this was emphasised during the concert. "We've 'graduated' from being teens, but we still stand for StayC (Star to a Young Culture)," said Sumin, 24, in a pre-recorded video clip. Yoon, who was only 16 years old when they debuted in 2020, added: "We started out as adolescents and now we're becoming adults." The 21-year-old noted that the challenge is in making small but notable changes and breaking down the walls they've built, and while watching them perform, I felt they've succeeded in this. Much like the title of their recent album, it felt like they went through metamorphosis with each performance - their concert was arranged in a way where they'd perform sets of songs belonging to one genre, and the next set would have a completely different vibe. This highlighted their versatility well. StayC girls it's goin' down! The girls are here at The Star Theatre ❤️#STAYC #스테이씨 #STAYCinSINGAPORE #STAYTUNEDinSG — AsiaOne (@asiaonecom) August 16, 2025 They also performed songs which displayed, in my opinion, their strong suit - live singing. While their stable vocals were louder and clearer than the backing track in every performance - even dance-heavy tracks like their newly released single I Want It - I enjoyed moments when they slowed things down and allowed the audience to just enjoy their singing. Their unit performances showcased each member's vocal colours well, but a crowd -favourite and one I too personally enjoyed was when all six of them sang Young Luv. Hearing 24-year-old Sieun's clear and lovely voice sing "I'm sorry for my young love," transition to J's deep vocals was pleasing to my ears, to say the least. "I want to show that StayC has no limits, that we are capable of all of this. Like, 'StayC has this side too?'" said the latter - the youngest member of the group who turns 21 in December - during a pre-recorded clip. Sieun believes StayC has "infinite potential": "Our spectrum is limitless, and we have so many different paths to explore. I don't want to set any boundaries." StayC pranking Sumin The members were just as entertaining during their talking segments, often responding to loud fans who screamed from the audience seats. Isa said she found out during the soundcheck that many fans didn't eat prior to the concert, and Yoon adorably asked: "Did you makan (eat) already? What food do you want to makan ?" One fan cheekily yelled: "StayC's love!" which they acknowledged and laughed over. Sumin shared a funny story about the members pranking her during their Sydney stop. In one part of the choreography for Asap, a member does an impromptu dance move while the rest follows. The member and dance move changes at every tour stop. In Sydney, Sumin ran to the corner but to her surprise, the members stood still and laughed. It was also Sumin's turn in Singapore and Yoon said she texted the group chat the night prior: "She said, 'You guys will follow me tomorrow, right? I'm so worried I can't sleep.'" [embed] It seems they spared Sumin this time, because when she did a ballerina twirl for her part in Asap in Singapore, the members swiftly followed. The last song before the encore was the one that stuck with me most. It brought back vivid memories of where I was during StayC's debut - it was released towards the end of the first year of the Covid pandemic, and when I was cooped up at home, So Bad was a song I looped endlessly. As someone who listens to more girl groups than boy bands in the K-pop scene, at the time, StayC's sound felt fresh and new to me. So when the beginning of So Bad played, I couldn't help but scream the opening lyrics with the fans: "StayC girls, it's going down!" There were multiple times throughout the concert where I thought, "Ah, this is what girl groups are about. This is K-pop." This was one of those moments where I felt that the most. Hearing 22-year-old Seeun's iconic " Geuge joha (I like that)" was truly a full-circle moment for me and made up for me missing their stop here last year. During one of the video clips, Sumin said she's curious to find out what they'll make out of their potential, and so am I. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for StayC.
