CHR seeks swift prosecution of child sellers
CHR issued the statement in light of the case of a one-month-old child sold online.
'CHR expresses grave concern and vehemently condemns the ongoing practice of child selling in the country. The sale of children—even by their own parents, and regardless of intent—is a clear violation of Philippine law and constitutes child trafficking, punishable under Republic Act No. 7610 (Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act) and Republic Act No. 9208, as amended (Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act),' it said.
'The government should immediately strengthen the monitoring and regulation of online platforms, enhance surveillance and investigative capabilities, as well as swiftly prosecute these perpetrators of child trafficking,' it added.
In addition, the commission urgently called on the Philippine government to uphold its obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
Article 35 of the UNCRC provides that all state parties should 'take all appropriate measures to prevent the abduction, sale, or trafficking of children,' given that 'these acts represent grave human rights violations that must be addressed with utmost urgency.'
'Let us stand united against the exploitation of children. No child should ever be bought, sold, or treated as a commodity,' the CHR said.
Further, it said individuals and couples seeking to adopt a child should do so under a legal and ethical process as provided under Republic Act No. 11642 or the Domestic Administrative Adoption and Alternative Child Care Act.
'Legal adoption safeguards the rights and welfare of the child. It is imperative that prospective adoptive parents follow lawful procedures,' the CHR said.
'We urge the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspected cases of child trafficking to the proper authorities. Protecting our children is a collective duty and a shared societal responsibility,' it added. —Llanesca Panti/LDF, GMA Integrated News

PH Consulate in LA finds supposed report on Tantoco death 'altered' —Palace
The Philippine Consulate in Los Angeles verified with American authorities the veracity of the police report on Rustan's executive Paolo Tantoco's death and found out that it was "altered." Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro disclosed this during a press briefing. She mentioned that the Department of Foreign Affairs, through the Philippine CRonsulate in Los Angeles, coordinated with US police on the matter. ''Some of the terms used in the purported letter were not in line with the BHPD's (Beverly Hills Police Department) standard language and protocol. BHPD would not include terms such as 'expected to be drug overdose,' 'suspected to be cocaine,' and 'summoned to BHPD,''' Castro said. ''With reference to Mr. (Rigoberto) Tiglao's post on the screenshot of the purported report surrounding the circumstances of the death of Mr. Paolo Tantoco in Los Angeles, the Philippine Consulate in Los Angeles had verified with the Beverly Hills Police Department on the veracity of the alleged report and found the police report posted by Mr. Tiglao was altered,'' she added. Earlier, Malacañang denounced efforts to link First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos to the death of Tantoco in March. Castro, in particular, branded as "a huge lie" the portion of a Beverly Hills Police Department report that was posted on Facebook. The said portion adverted to "drug overdose" and the companions of the deceased getting summoned for questioning. She also disclosed that the Palace was studying to take legal action against those behind the allegations against the First Lady.

Davao City Council backs call for release of ex-President Duterte
The Davao City Council has passed a resolution expressing support for the call for the release of former President and Davao City Mayor-elect Rodrigo Duterte from the detention center at International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands. City councilors said the resolution is in support of the appeal submitted before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Duterte's immediate release and repatriation. Among the reasons are humanitarian consideration, citing Duterte being 80 years old, as well as judicial and jurisdictional grounds. A copy of the resolution will be given to the Embassy of the Philippines in The Netherlands, Duterte's lead counsel, Atty. Nicholas Kaufman, Office of the Vice President, Interpol, and other relevant agencies. As of this writing, ICC has yet to decide on the request for Duterte's interim release. Earlier, the Senate passed a resolution urging the Philippine government to take steps for the possible house arrest of Duterte within the premises of the Philippine Embassy in The Netherlands, instead of the ICC detention center. Duterte has been in detention since March 2025 for alleged crimes against humanity in connection with the killings in his administration's war against illegal drugs. He made his first appearance before the ICC's Pre-Trial Chamber on March 14, 2025 via a video link from the ICC Detention Centre. The confirmation of charges hearing is scheduled to begin on September 23, 2025.
