Jules Verne's beloved 1872 novel, Around the World in Eighty Days, has seen countless adaptations over the years.
While some renditions have hit the mark, others have missed it. Thankfully, the latest take on the classic - a joint venture by PBS and BBC in 2021 - has been hailed as a triumph.
Tagged as a historical period drama, Around the World in 80 Days (2021) was greenlit by the European Alliance, a cooperative effort involving Germany's ZDF, Italy's RAI, and France Télévisions, with Belgium's Be-Films/RTBF and America's Masterpiece also chipping in as co-production partners. The series was shot in South Africa, France, and the UK, with additional filming carried out in Romania.

The programme first graced screens on La Une in Belgium in 2021, before making its grand entrance on BBC One in the UK on Boxing Day, 2021. Ahead of its launch, it was revealed that the show had already bagged a second series.
However, come October 2024, the Express reported that there were no current plans to extend the series beyond its debut season, reports Surrey Live.
David Tennant stars as intrepid explorer Phileas Fogg, with Ibrahim Koma playing his valet Jean Passepartout and Leonie Benesch as the adventurous Abigail Fix Fortescue in the high-stakes drama set after Fogg wagers a bet against a smug Reform Club member and embarks on an 80-day global odyssey. Amidst the fictional escapade, the series also brings historical personas like Bass Reeves, Adolphe Thiers, and Jane Digby to life within its plot.
The adaptation of Jules Verne's classic "Around the World in 80 Days" has been well received, securing an 81 per cent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting a general thumbs-up for this new take. One critic lauded the series, noting: "There's a reason that Jules Verne's novel has been made and re-made over the decades -- it's a riveting adventure tale, and this version is no exception."
Another remarked positively: "This new adaptation of Around The World In 80 Days more or less tells new stories that may have more parallels into the 21st century than the 19th. But it's also an action-filled, fast-moving delight."
Still, not everyone was impressed, with a dissenting voice stating: "It's ultimately a middling, entirely unnecessary new take on Verne's classic adventure novel, and its main cast seems aware they're starring in what amounts to an afterschool special."
Some viewers found the adaptation a triumph, with comments such as: "There is something about this time of year that demands a good, solid adaptation of a literary classic. Right on cue, here is Around the World in 80 Days for the entire family to enjoy."
Echoing these kudos, one fan said: "Nice cast, good work, I read the book and watched all the previous versions (also the anime). I like how it was changed."
Others lavished praise on the recent 2021 remake, as another enthusiast expressed: "It's about time Jules Verne's famous story got the screen adaptation it deserves. Around the World in 80 Days is a fresh take on the timeless classic with a few tweaks to suit a modern audience. The cast is phenomenal. The writing, directing, cinematography, and production design are all brilliant and bring back memories of a time when TV productions weren't the c**p streaming services spit out nowadays."
However, not everyone was entirely convinced, as one viewer noted: "A solid enough adaptation of the Verne classic, that does play it rather safe at times. It tries to tackle some important social issues along the way, but it does come across at times as rather forced and half baked."

BBC shares major update on Doctor Who future amid hiatus

Doctor Who will return with or without the extra funding from Disney, the BBC has now confirmed whilst the series is on hiatus following the departure of Ncuti Gatwa Doctor Who will return with or without the extra funding from Disney, BBC bosses confirmed yesterday. ‌ The sci-fi show is currently on a hiatus following the end of the two-year deal with Disney, which culminated with the departure of Ncuti Gatwa in the title role. ‌ Crushing rumours that the show would not return if Disney's huge cash injection did not return, the BBC's new head of content Kate Phillips said: "Rest assured Doctor Who is going nowhere. Disney has been a great partnership and it continues with The War Between The Land And The Sea next year." ‌ Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival Kate, who is just two months into her job, stressed: 'With or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC." The uncertainty around the series has been caused by Disney's continuing reluctance to commit to either renewing its funding deal with the BBC - or pull out. ‌ But show creator Russell T Davies has indicated he's already working on scripts for the next series, and also for another one after that. Later in the session, the BBC's drama controller Lindsay Salt said she had 'no update' in terms of timings " on Doctor Who but said that information would be made public as soon as it was possible. Agreeing with Kate, she said the BBC commitment to Doctor Who as one of its biggest brands was water-tight, adding that the show was "hugely important to us"." ‌ Now Doctor Who fans have the spin-off show, The War Between the Land and the Sea, which expected to start around Christmas. Disney reportedly injected around £100million into Doctor Who, which gave a a significant boost to the show's production budget, allowing for CGI use of dinosaurs and other stunts. ‌ There is still a chance that the deal will be renewed, or that BBC Studios will find another partner to join forces with. In the session about the BBC, Kate also said the corporation 'acted fast' after misconduct allegations against former MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace. And she urged anyone who felt they had grievances to air against top talent to come forward, stressing that they would be taken seriously. 'No one is irreplaceable,' she said. On MasterChef, she said she'd acted on the information she'd had in 2019. 'So there were two complaints. I dealt with them. I acted on them fast. I think I acted responsibly. I left him in no doubt of the expected behaviour that we expect at the BBC, if you like. I stand by the actions I took at the time with the knowledge that I had. Other allegations didn't come to us until much later, sort of at the end of 2023, and at that point we did act, and we acted fast.' Wallace was dropped from the series after multiple claims of inappropriate language and behaviour against him were upheld. Later his co-host John Torode was also dismissed after a complaint over his 'racist language' was upheld.

Here for it!' said Danielle L. 'Wow, what a beautiful movie!' began imme-van-gorp on IMDB. 'This had exactly what a good romantic drama should give: True chemistry, genuine emotion, gorgeous settings, real love, severe heartbreak, and just something that truly sweeps you up and puts you on a roller coaster ride of feelings! 'It went from warm and fuzzy to devastating and heart-rending very slowly, and so I felt like those feelings all came very naturally and, therefore, all the more heartbreakingly. 'In other words, this movie was so lovely yet so sad, and it definitely did exactly what it needed to do to have me in a passionate chokehold from start to finish.' The Summer I Turned Pretty – Romance TV show with 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.4/10 on IMDB The Hunt for Shannon Matthews – 2025 documentary about the disappearance of Shannon Matthews in 2008, which turned out to be a staged kidnapping scheme from her mother and Michael Donovan to claim a £50,000 reward. Butterfly – Action film following former US intelligence operative living in South Korea as he is hunted by a sociopathic young agent tasked with killing him. 6.8/10 IMDB. Neighbours – This Australian TV soap needs no introduction… Countdown – No, not the quiz show. This is a thriller TV show following an LAPD detective who is in a race against time to save millions of people. It's got a 35% Rotten Tomatoes score, though IMDB is looking healthier with 6.8/10. However not everyone is convinced, as Hannah C gave it a an icy one star and wrote: 'This was truly the worst hour (or however long that took) of my entire life. More Trending 'The money spent on making this movie could've been used in so many better ways: feeding the hungry, saving the world, or even covering someone's blow out bachelor party to Vegas. 'Please don't do that ever again. I wish nobody spoke. If there was a plot, I couldn't find it.' The Map That Leads to You is available to watch on Amazon Prime. Got a story?
