Stellantis Stock (STLA) Powers Forward as Tesla's Chinese Challenge Intensifies

Shares in auto maker Stellantis (STLA) raced higher today as rival Tesla (TSLA) was handed another huge roadblock in the Chinese EV market.

The Stellantis leap came on reports that Hangzhou-based EV maker Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology is launching a battery-powered sedan in mainland China.
Leap Lower
The B01, a midsize sedan, offers features similar to Tesla's Model 3 but reportedly at less than half the price at 89,800 yuan.
According to a report in the South China Morning Post, it is understood that Leapmotor, which is backed by Stellantis, also plans to launch the car in global markets at a yet-to-be-decided date.
Deliveries to mainland Chinese customers will reportedly begin this month and include five variants with driving ranges from 430 kilometers to 650 kilometers.
The top-end model is priced at 119,800 yuan, the report said. Meanwhile, a Tesla-made Model 3 is priced from 235,500 yuan to 339,500 yuan.
Tesla's China sales have suffered this year, falling month after month, as it suffered more intense competition from domestic rivals such as BYD (BYDDY). That's important given that a fifth of Tesla revenues come from China – see below.
Stellantis Charge
China's car market has also been dragged into a price war as companies compete to win over consumers who, hit by a sluggish economy, are reluctant to spend.
However, Tesla recorded a 0.8% increase in June, delivering 71,599 units and breaking an eight-month losing streak. Meanwhile, deliveries of Tesla's China-made Model 3 and Model Y autos surged 16.1% compared to May. These figures include vehicles sold both within China and exported to other markets.
Tesla is hoping for further growth from its revamped Model Y car. The six-seat sports utility vehicle could be launched in the fall.
Reports suggest that the new Model Y will be larger than the current five-seat version and will have a top speed of 201 kilometers an hour.
As for Stellantis, known for traditional car brands such as Chrysler, it keeps charging forward in the electric space.
It has been reported that starting this September, some South African Stellantis dealers will sell Leapmotor electric vehicles, starting with the C10 SUV. More models are set to follow over the course of 2025 and into 2026.
It's much needed if it wants to keep making inroads into the likes of Tesla both in China and elsewhere. As we see below it has underperformed Tesla substantially over the last 12 months.

Claire's files second bankruptcy petition in 7 years

Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Officials for retailer Claire's filed for bankruptcy protection on Wednesday as its operating costs rise while demand for its goods declines among its youthful customers. A combination of tariffs on the mostly Chinese-produced goods sold by Claire's and inflation has cooled demand among its mostly youthful customers, according to NPR. So has its distribution system of brick-and-mortar storefronts inside malls at a time when its traditionally youthful shoppers prefer buying goods online. Illinois-based Claire's has a $500 million loan due for payment next year, but its declining revenues and profits endanger its stores in the United States and Canada. "Increased competition, consumer spending trends and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail, in combination with our current debt obligations and macroeconomic factors, necessitate this course of action for Claire's and its stakeholders," Claire's Chief Executive Officer Chris Cramer said in a prepared statement. Claire's counterpart in Canada likely will file for bankruptcy protection there, but the retailer's North American stores will remain open. "We remain in active discussions with potential strategic and financial partners and are committed to completing our review of strategic alternatives," Cramer said. Claire's filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Delaware. The retailer is noted for its low-cost fashion accessories, jewelry and piercing services. In 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy protection. Elliott Management Corp. and Monarch Alternative Capital now control Claire's, which wiped out $1.9 billion in debt and kept its retail outlets open after securing a $575 million loan, according to CNBC. The retailer cited between $1 billion and $10 billion in assets and liabilities alike in Wednesday's bankruptcy filing. Tariffs on Chinese-made goods could affect Claire's supply chain, and increased competition from ear-piercing service providers is affecting Claire's business among its younger customers. "Competition has ... become sharper and more intense over recent years," GlobalData managing director Neil Saunders recently said. "Retailers like Lovisa [are] offering younger shoppers a more sophisticated assortment at value prices," Saunders said. "This is more attuned to what younger consumers want and has left Claire's looking somewhat out of step with modern demand," he added. Amazon and other online retailers also are negatively affecting Claire's business model, according to Saunders. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

Just Two Weeks In, Tesla Diner Already Axed Most of Its Menu

is the Lead Editor of the Southern California/Southwest region, and has covered dining, restaurants, food culture, and nightlife in Los Angeles since 2008. As of August 5, only five sandwiches, two sides, two flavors of pie, shakes, and some soft drinks were available to order from the in-car Tesla infotainment system. Even the Epic Bacon has been taken off the menu, with non-epic bacon available as an add-on to burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches, but no longer as a standalone item. Tesla Diner chef Eric Greenspan told Eater over text that the menu would be 'forever evolving,' and that the 'unprecedented demand' led to the team scaling down the menu for efficiency. Greenspan also said Easter eggs and specials would be added here and there. Dishes that were originally on the menu but were removed include the market salad, chicken and waffles, club sandwich, hash brown bites, biscuits and red gravy, and chocolate chip cookies. The veggie patty option for the burger is also no longer available. Breakfast items like waffles that were once listed as 'all-day breakfast' implying they were available all the time, are only served in the mornings. Greenspan said soft serve ice cream would return later this week, so the farm could meet the increased demand, while the biscuits would return as a special 'sooner rather than later.' The reimagined classic fountain drinks, including Shirley Temples and Creamsicles, are gone. While the Tesla Diner marketed itself as a 24-hour restaurant, reports from some drivers say non-Tesla vehicles are not allowed to charge on the premises, while its hours of operation are limited to 6 a.m. to midnight, except for those charging and ordering through their Teslas. The vaunted screen-ordering system with the geofence alert wasn't working off-premises as of August 5, but Tesla drivers were able to order from their cars once they parked and began charging. Chef Eric Greenspan said that the menu would be 'forever evolving.' Grilled cheese sandwich with non-epic bacon, with the cheese not fully melted and the bread burned at Tesla Diner on August 5, 2025. Matthew Kang In March 2025, the New York Times reported that Greenspan (Greenspan's Grilled Cheese, MrBeast Burger) would lead the kitchen at Tesla Diner. Operations are managed by LA restaurateur Bill Chait, who is behind the openings of Republique, Bestia, and Firstborn, and continues to be involved in Tartine both in the U.S. and abroad. Los Angeles-based New York Times restaurant critic Tejal Rao offered an early review of the diner on August 5, noting the lack of menu items from the opening. Rao called the chicken tenders 'agreeable,' while the all-beef hot dog had 'withered' by the time she ate it on the second-floor balcony. The burger, whose patty gets smashed by a Tesla-designed device, 'didn't stand out in any meaningful way,' wrote Rao. And Optimus, the second-floor popcorn robot, was nowhere to be found. Tesla's product rollouts are often accompanied by long delays (Cybertruck, the second generation Roadster, full self-driving capabilities, RoboTaxi, etc.) and significant quality issues. Now that the car company has ventured into the restaurant business, it's becoming clear that operating a diner is fraught with its own set of challenges, including service, labor, and food costs. Whether Tesla Diner manages to bring back much of its menu or runs out of range (still) remains to be seen.
