Leaking roof, injury fear derail Justin's dream run in Macau final

KUALA LUMPUR: Justin Hoh wasn't crippled by nerves, but by fear of injury, as he slumped to a limp 21-15, 21-5 defeat to Indonesia's Alwi Farhan in the Macau Open final on Sunday.
The match was marred by poor playing conditions, with the Macau East Asian Games Dome court soaked due to a leaking roof, forcing repeated stoppages as court attendants scrambled to mop up the surface.
Still haunted by the Achilles tendon rupture that almost ended his career last year, the world No. 45 was clearly shaken and could only offer token resistance in his first World Tour final.
National singles coach K. Yogendran confirmed that the persistent roof leak disrupted the entire match and affected Justin's movement.
"The roof was leaking and the court had to be constantly mopped. It affected Justin's movement," said Yogendran.
"His heart wanted the title, but mentally he just wasn't brave enough."
"We all know what he went through with the injury. He's only just come back and is still rebuilding. His movement just wasn't there."
Yogendran acknowledged that world No. 25 Alwi was the better player on the day, but stressed the poor conditions robbed the final of a proper contest.
Despite the tame finish, Justin had enjoyed a solid run to the final, seeing off India's world No. 52 K. Sathish Kumar, world No. 31 Ayush Shetty, Thailand's world No. 52 Kantaphon Wangcharoen and world No. 47 Tharun Mannepalli along the way.
"It was a good week for Justin," said Yogendran.
"He beat Sathish and Ayush in straight games, and avenged his previous losses to Kantaphon and Tarun. He's finally got his game back and knows where he stands. Now we need to keep working on his weaknesses."
Alwi, 20, now leads their head-to-head 4-2, but Justin's maiden final appearance is a timely confidence boost.
The Malaysian is seen as part of the emerging 'next gen' group tipped to take over the men's singles circuit — led by world No. 7 Alex Lanier of France, alongside Alwi, Ayush, Hong Kong's world No. 40 Jason Gunawan, and Justin.
Justin also walked away with his biggest career cheque — US$14,060 (RM60,135) — while Alwi bagged US$29,230 (RM125,018) for the win.

Nunez nears Al Hilal switch as Liverpool prepare Isak bid

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is reportedly closing in on a move to Saudi club Al Hilal, which could allow the Premier League champions to make a fresh bid for Newcastle's Alexander Isak. Nunez joined the Reds for an initial 75 million euros (US$87 million, £65 million) from Benfica three years ago but has failed to live up to that price tag. The Uruguayan has scored 40 goals in 143 appearances but slipped down the pecking order at Anfield under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Al Hilal will pay an initial 53 million euros for the 26-year-old. Nunez was likely to play even less this season after Liverpool signed Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz as part of a 300 million euro spending spree that also includes full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. However, the club could still break the British transfer record by signing Isak, with Newcastle reportedly demanding a fee of up to £150 million for the Swedish striker. The sale of Nunez would take Liverpool's income for transfer sales this window to nearly 200 million euros after the departures of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tyler Morton. Harvey Elliott is also attracting interest from RB Leipzig, with Liverpool wanting at least 45 million euros for the England midfielder. Nunez would become the latest big name to join Al Hilal, who shocked Manchester City to reach the quarter-finals of the recent Club World Cup. Coached by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, the Saudi club's squad includes Portuguese internationals Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly and former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.--AFP

Arteta: Arsenal ready to win after years of falling short

LONDON: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said the Gunners believe this season will be different as they aim to get over a series of near misses at winning silverware. Arteta has not won a trophy since lifting the FA Cup in his debut season in charge in 2019/20. However, he has transformed Arsenal back into serial contenders for major trophies. Arteta's men have finished second in the Premier League for the past three years and reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2009 last season. The pressure is now on the Spaniard to get over the line after another major investment in new players in the transfer window. Nearly £200 million (US$266 million) has been spent on new striker Viktor Gyokeres, midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, centre-back Cristhian Mosquera as well as winger Noni Madueke and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. "We know what our targets are and what we want to achieve this season – there is a big belief in our ability to achieve that," Arteta said in his programme notes ahead of Wednesday's pre-season friendly against Villarreal. "We have been very, very close the last few seasons and the whole team is going to determine whether we achieve that or not. "But at the same time, we have to make sure that we don't lose sight of what we have to do on a daily basis to get to the levels that we want. "We have to set the demands that we want within this goal, because that's the most important thing – the internal demands have to always exceed any external demand. That is what we are trying to achieve every single day." Arteta added he wants his players to feel "invincible" at home thanks to a special connection with the club's fans. "We want our people to start connecting with our players straight away, to start to build momentum and to start to feel that at home we are invincible," he said. "That we play here with such passion, energy and connection with our people, that we are going to win the game."

Su Yin battles fear and self-doubt ahead of debut in World C'ships

Malaysia mixed doubles shuttlers Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin in action against Hong Kong's Hung Kuei-chun-Tsang Hiu-yan during the first round of Malaysian Masters at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttler Cheng Su Yin has to shed her fears and self-doubt to regain her best form. Su Yin has struggled for form this year with Hoo Pang Ron and suffered a second-round defeat to eventual champions Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje of Denmark in the Macau Open last week. Worryingly, it was the pair's ninth early round exit this year and they have only made it as far as the last eight twice in the Indonesian Masters and Orleans Masters. Pang Ron-Su Yin finished runners-up in the China Masters last November but have looked a shadow of their best selves this year. National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said that the 22-year-old Su Yin is struggling with fear and self-doubt and needs to overcome these to get back to her best. "Pang Ron-Su Yin's problems started when they unexpectedly lost to a Taiwanese pair in the Malaysian Open first round in January," said Rexy. "They were leading but could not maintain their performance and lost. After that, Su Yin started doubting herself. "Last year, she played with a nothing-to-lose mentality as there were no expectations on her and Pang Ron. "She was fearless as it was a surprise whenever they won. This year, she has started to feel pressured and fears making mistakes. "She and Pang Ron have stagnated and she needs to change her way of thinking," added Rexy. Pang Ron-Su Yin don't have much time to work on their weaknesses with the World Championships coming up next for them from Aug 25-31 in Paris. The pair will be making their debuts together in the prestigious meet. The other Malaysia mixed doubles pairs that have qualified are world No. 4 Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and world No. 6 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie. For the record, Malaysia have only won a medal once in the mixed doubles in the world meet through Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty, who claimed bronze in the 2006 edition in Madrid. In the last edition in 2023 in Copenhagen, Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who reached the quarter-finals, were the country's best performers in the mixed doubles.
