Iga Swiatek's overnight turnaround from Cincinnati to New York
NEW YORK (AP) — Around 8 p.m. Monday, Iga Swiatek was holding up her Cincinnati Open championship trophy. Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, she was getting ready for her mixed doubles match at the U.S. Open in New York City. It's been a quick turnaround. 'This was the most extreme situation and most extreme schedule I've had after a title win,' Swiatek, currently ranked second in the world, said Tuesday afternoon. 'An hour and a half after the match, we already went to catch a plane.' But that didn't slow her down. Swiatek and Casper Ruud, her mixed doubles partner, won both of their Tuesday matches to secure a spot in Wednesday's mixed doubles quarterfinal, where they'll be competing for a spot in the $1 million title game. 'Actually, it's kind of nice to have another task, and to not let yourself be lazy but really focus on the next exciting thing,' she said about the quick turnaround. Ruud didn't always feel quite so calm about it. He was dining in New York while Swiatek played her title match in Ohio and keeping a close eye on the score. He was secretly chatting with Swiatek's team throughout the match — 'she doesn't know this,' Ruud said with a laugh — and wondering about their doubles match the next morning. 'I can't lie. I was a little concerned,' he said about watching Swiatek continue to progress through the Cincinnati Open's rounds. He exited the tournament in the first round. '(But) she was here doing her warmup at 10 a.m. … I look at Iga and I'm like, 'This is determination, like I've never seen it before.'' The quick turnaround from Cincinnati is new for singles players at the U.S. Open. With this year's reimagined mixed doubles draw, which includes top singles players for the first time, the week that was usually recovery time is now playing time. Carlos Alcaraz, the men's champion in Cincinnati, faced a similar turnaround to his afternoon doubles match with Emma Raducanu. He did have a few more hours on each end, given the scheduling of both tournaments. Alcaraz was knocked out of mixed doubles Tuesday afternoon, but Swiatek and Ruud will be back in action Wednesday. 'Iga will have a good sleep tonight,' said Ruud. 'She deserves that.'

San Antonio Spurs 2025-26 season predictions after NBA schedule release
The post San Antonio Spurs 2025-26 season predictions after NBA schedule release appeared first on ClutchPoints. In the release of the 2025-2026 NBA schedule, the San Antonio Spurs find themselves with 22 nationally televised games, including seven on ESPN and five on NBC, which will carry the NBA for the first time since 2002. With a young talented core that now includes rookie Dylan Harper and led by the return of Victor Wembanyama, here are predictions on how the Silver and Black may fare. Look for Spurs to start well Slow Novembers and Decembers have plagued the Spurs in the Wemby era. After winning three of the their first five games in Wembanyama's rookie season, they famously — or infamously — suffered a franchise record 18-game losing streak. Much better than that 3-20 start, San Antonio was hovering at right around .500 last year before improving to 15-13 shortly before Christmas Day. While .500 isn't bad, especially for a young squad that was coming off a 22-60 mark, it's not necessarily the work of an expected playoff contender either. The 2025-26 Spurs will begin the campaign vs. the Dallas Mavericks for a third straight season. This time, though, they won't have to deal with Luka Doncic during the opener. Because of injury, Kyrie Irving won't be in Big D either on Oct. 22. Including that contest, in which the Spurs will look to break a two-game Opening Night losing streak to the Mavs, five of the Spurs' six matchups come against teams that missed the playoffs last season. The exception comes against the Miami Heat, who finished as the East's eighth seed. Even after games against the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets on Nov. 5 and 6, San Antonio will go through another stretch in which it will mostly face opponents that either didn't qualify for the 2025 postseason or were one of the lower seeds. It's not until the days following Thanksgiving when they'll face the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers that the Spurs will take on very good competition in succession. 45+ wins will get San Antonio into playoffs A favorable 2025 portion of the schedule will help pad the Spurs' record going into 2026. For instance, San Antonio doesn't face the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder until a home-and-home that'll be capped on Christmas Day in one of the team's two games this season on ABC. Like last year, the Rodeo Road Trip in February will not only include the NBA All-Star break, but also two games in Austin as part of the organization's outreach to Texas' capital city. It's a reality that helps lessen the grind for what essentially amounts to a month away from the Alamo City. Of the nine opponents they'll face in this particular stretch, only the Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks advanced past the first round last year. All told, the Silver and Black have enough opportunities to start well enough to sustain what should prove a final month of the season. A healthy De'Aaron Fox, reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and Harper, the second overall pick in the draft, will lend more than enough support for Wemby to lead the Spurs over 45 wins and into the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

Key piece of 2014 Spurs title team officially retires from basketball
The post Key piece of 2014 Spurs title team officially retires from basketball appeared first on ClutchPoints. 2024 San Antonio Spurs forward Marco Belinelli officially announced his retirement from basketball. At the end of his playing days in the NBA, Belinell signed a three-year deal with Virtus Bologna, an Italian club team. Belinelli also played for the Italian national basketball team throughout his career. However, he did not participate in the 2024 Olympics. Belinelli's retirement was announced by the FIBA EuroBasket's X, formerly Twitter. Belinelli last played for the Spurs in 2020 when the season was cut short due to the COVID pandemic before the season resumed for 22 out of the 30 teams that were invited to the bubble near Walt Disney World in Orlando. After the Spurs were eliminated, Belinelli agreed to a three-year deal to play in Italy. However, the 2014 Spurs champion will be remembered for his role that led to an NBA championship. He averaged 11.4 points on 48.5% shooting, including 43% from deep, where he was a consistent threat from behind the arc. Belinelli averaged 9.7 points on 42.4% shooting, including 37.6% from three throughout his 13-year NBA career. Belinelli, the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, spent 13 seasons in the NBA. He has played for the Golden State Warriors, the Toronto Raptors, the New Orleans Hornets, the Chicago Bulls, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Philadelphia 76ers, along with the Spurs. 2025-26 season predictions for the Spurs after schedule release While this year's San Antonio Spurs are far from championship contenders, such as the team champion Marco Belinelli played for, they've built an intriguing young core that's built for the future. Led by All-Star center Victor Wembanyama, 2025 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and the second overall pick in this year's NBA draft, guard Dylan Harper, the Spurs could make a significant stride in 2025-26. Surrounding their young core with proven veterans such as point guard De'Aaron Fox, and a pair of veteran centers in Kelly Olynyk and Luke Kornet, the Spurs will look to build off of last season. The Spurs also inked Fox to a long-term extension for four years, worth $229 million. Pairing Fox with Wembanyama appears to be a focal point of the Spurs' future. After Wembanyama suffered blood clots, which ended his 2024-25 season, he didn't get many reps with Fox on the floor. Still, that didn't prevent the Spurs front office from making its long-term investment in Fox, which suggested the kind of direction the Spurs want to head in despite rostering two promising guards in Castle and Harper, who both play the same position as De'Aaron.
