Iran executes two members of opposition group
Mehdi Hassani and Behrouz Ehsani-Eslamloo, identified as 'operational elements' of the MEK, were sentenced to death in September 2024 - a verdict upheld by the Supreme Court, which denied their request for a retrial, Mizan said.
'The terrorists, in coordination with MEK leaders, had ... built launchers and hand-held mortars in line with the group's goals, fired projectiles heedlessly at citizens, homes, service and administrative facilities, educational and charity centres,' the report said.
Maryam Rajavi, who leads the National Council of Resistance of Iran of which the MEK is the main force, paid tribute to the pair.
'Honour to these steadfast Mojahedin who, after three years of unwavering resistance under torture, pressure, and threats, fulfilled their solemn pledge to God and the people with pride and dignity.'
The defendants were indicted with 'moharebeh' - an Islamic term meaning waging war against God - destroying public property and 'membership in a terrorist organisation with the aim of disrupting national security.'
Amnesty International said that Ehsani-Eslamloo and Hassani were arrested in 2022 and maintained their innocence during a trial which the rights group called 'grossly unfair and marred by allegations of torture and forced confessions.'
'According to informed sources, agents interrogated them without lawyers present and subjected them to torture and other ill-treatment, including beatings and prolonged solitary confinement, to extract self-incriminating statements,' it said in January.
According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the number of people executed in Iran rose to at least 901 in 2024, the highest number since 2015.
The MEK, known in English as People's Mujahideen Organisation of Iran, was a powerful leftist-Islamist group that staged bombing campaigns against the shah's government and US targets in the 1970s but ultimately fell out with the other factions of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Since then, the MEK has opposed the Islamic Republic and its leadership in exile has been Paris-based. The group was listed as a terrorist organisation by the US and the European Union until 2012.

‘Youm-e-Istehsal' observed against India's unlawful actions
ISLAMABAD: On the sixth anniversary of India's illegal and unilateral actions of 5th August 2019 in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the people and Government of Pakistan solemnly observed 'Youm-e-Istehsal' on Tuesday. Pakistan said it would continue to extend its complete moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmiri people's just struggle for realisation of their inalienable right to self-determination. In their special messages on the occasion, the president, the prime minister and the deputy prime minister/foreign minister have renewed Pakistan's unwavering diplomatic, political and moral support to the Kashmir cause and called for resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and aspirations of the Kashmiri people. They have also underscored that India's unlawful actions since 5th August 2019 are aimed at turning the Kashmiris into a disempowered community in their own land. The deputy prime minister/foreign minister has addressed letters to president UN General Assembly, president UN Security Council, UN Secretary General, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and OIC secretary general to apprise them of the latest developments in IIOJK. In these letters, he has urged the implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions to enable the people of Jammu and Kashmir to determine their own future. He has also stressed the urgent need for improving the human rights situation in IIOJK and releasing the incarcerated Kashmiri political prisoners. Ahead of the 'Youm-e-Istehsal,' the foreign secretary briefed the Islamabad-based diplomatic missions on the situation in IIOJK, on 4th August 2025. She highlighted the legal, security and human rights dimensions of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, with special reference to the developments of the past few months in the region. To express solidarity with the oppressed people of IIOJK, a special walk was held in Islamabad, Tuesday morning, along the Constitution Avenue, up to the D-Chowk. The walk was led by Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. The officers and staff members of the ministry participated in the walk, alongside people from other spheres of life. A range of activities have been designed throughout the country to observe 'Youm-e-Istehsal', which include public rallies, seminars, webinars, panel discussions and photo exhibitions. With the active participation of Pakistani and Kashmiri Diaspora, Pakistan's diplomatic missions around the world are also arranging special events to raise global awareness about the Indian oppression in IIOJK. On this day, Dar said six years ago, India took a number of unilateral and illegal actions vis-a-vis IIOJK. These measures were aimed at undermining the internationally recognised disputed status of the territory and consolidating the Indian occupation. 'India has introduced a number of laws aimed at changing the demographic structure and political landscape of IIOJK since 5 August 2019. Issuing domicile certificates to outsiders, registering temporary residents in the voters' lists, gerrymandering of the Assembly constituencies, modification of land and property ownership laws, and according greater administrative powers to the so-called Lieutenant Governor are some key measures which have been introduced in that connection. Clearly, all these actions are in blatant violation of the UN Charter, United Nations Security Council resolutions, and international law, including the 4th Geneva Convention,' he asserted. In the continued presence of hundreds of thousands of Indian troops, IIOJK remains one of the highly militarised zones in the world. Thousands of Kashmiri political prisoners have been languishing in jails for years. The mistreatment of Kashmiri journalists and human rights defenders has further revealed India's willingness to go to any lengths to silence the dissenting voices. The massive crackdown, launched in the aftermath of the Pahalgam Attack, demonstrated that India still treats IIOJK as a colony. The recent hostilities between Pakistan and India have once again highlighted the urgent need for a peaceful settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions and wishes of the Kashmiri people, for the sake of a durable peace in South Asia. Bangladesh's Yunus calls for reform on revolution anniversary
DHAKA: Bangladesh's interim leader on Tuesday marked the one year anniversary since the overthrow of the autocratic regime of Sheikh Hasina by calling for people to seize the 'opportunity' of reform. But Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, the 85-year-old who is leading the caretaker government as its chief adviser until elections are held, also warned against those he said sought to roll back gains made. 'Today marks an unforgettable chapter in the history of Bangladesh', Yunus said, marking a day he said had led to 'liberating our beloved nation from the grip of long-standing fascist rule'. The South Asian nation of around 170 million people has been in political turmoil since a student-led revolt ousted then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, ending her 15-year rule. Yunus later addressed crowds of thousands outside parliament, standing in the rain, issuing a 'proclamation' alongside leaders of key political parties — a document to be added to the country's constitution. 'The trust of the people... as expressed by the mass uprising for addressing the political and constitutional crisis in Bangladesh is justified, legitimate and internationally recognised,' he read from the document. 'The people of Bangladesh express their desire for ensuring good governance and fair elections, rule of law and economic and social justice, and for introducing lawfully democratic reforms for all state and constitutional institutions'. The crowd, some wearing headbands made from the national flag, and who included families of those killed in the deadly crackdown on the protests, applauded after Yunus read the document. Fariha Tamanna, 25, who travelled to Dhaka on a government-sponsored train, said it was 'deeply satisfying' to hear the government 'acknowledge the uprising'. 'There's still a long road ahead, so many wrongs continue,' she added. 'But I still hold on to hope.' Kazi Solaiman, 47, a teacher in an Islamic school, said it was a day of celebration. 'An oppressor was forced to flee by the people's uprising,' he told AFP. 'I hope Bangladesh never again becomes a land of tyranny.' 'Stand united' Hasina's rule saw widespread human rights abuses, including the mass detention and extrajudicial killing of her political opponents, and Yunus has pledged to overhaul democratic institutions. 'The sacrifice of thousands has gifted us this rare opportunity for national reform, and we must protect it at any cost,' Yunus said in letter issued to mark the anniversary.

PPP holds rally to express solidarity with Kashmiris
KARACHI: Provincial Minister for Energy, Planning & Development Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani, and Minister for Culture & Tourism Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah stated that under the leadership of Field Marshal General Asim Munir, India has been given a befitting response. God willing, we will soon ensure the Kashmiri people attain their right to self-determination. The case of Kashmir is a case of justice and humanity. Today, India is facing disgrace globally, and, God willing, a decision in favour of Kashmiris under the UN resolutions will be achieved soon. By August 5, 2026, the situation in Kashmir will have completely changed. They expressed these views while addressing the rally marking Kashmir Exploitation Day, which commenced from Peoples Chowrangi and concluded at Mazar-e-Quaid. The rally was also addressed by Advocate Parvez Ahmed, a Hurriyat leader from Occupied Kashmir, PPP's Lal Chand Ukrani, and others. Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Sindh, Saleem Baloch, Sarfaraz Rajar, Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, Kulsoom Chandio, Owais Shah, Senior Member Board of Revenue Syed Khalid Haider Shah, Deputy Commissioner East Abrar Jaffar, Ghulam Muhammad, and others also participated in the rally. Kashmir and Pakistani flags were displayed along the rally route. Participants held portraits of Kashmiri freedom fighters, and a large number of students were present. While addressing the rally, Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani said that every year on August 5, we mark 'Kashmir Exploitation Day' to condemn Indian aggression and the illegal abrogation of Article 370 against the UN resolutions, and express solidarity with our Kashmiri brothers. He said that in 2024, while we observed this day, we were not as hopeful as we are now in 2025. The humiliation India faced at the hands of the Pakistani forces on May 10 has raised our spirits, and we are confident that by 2026, the Kashmir issue will have seen further improvement. Saeed Ghani said that 'the butcher of Gujarat' Modi, previously refused to even speak on Kashmir, but after the Pakistan-India war, he is now compelled to consider dialogue. He said the world should clearly understand that we will never accept the division of Kashmir, and we continue to stand with the Kashmiri people. He emphasized that India has been globally disgraced, and soon, the Kashmir issue will be resolved. He added that during the war, while the world stood with India, it was Pakistan's Armed Forces and divine help that led to India's defeat within days — the world saw it. Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, in his address, said that, God willing, the days of oppression in occupied Kashmir will soon end. He credited the bravery of the Pakistani army, divine blessings, and national unity for the victory and reiterated commitment to secure freedom for Kashmiris according to their own will. He added that Pakistan is our top priority, and Kashmiris are our brothers. Referring to the atrocities in Gaza, he questioned the world's selective attention and urged them to acknowledge the oppression in Kashmir as well. He noted that Kashmiri leadership remains imprisoned, yet the spirit of the people remains strong. He said Modi is promoting brutality in the region, but Pakistan, under Field Marshal General Asim Munir's leadership and Bilawal Bhutto's global advocacy, is giving a strong response. He pledged continued diplomatic efforts until Kashmir is free and joins Pakistan. Hurriyat leader Advocate Parvez Ahmed, addressing the rally, thanked the Government of Sindh on behalf of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference for organizing solidarity events across the province and amplifying the voice of Kashmiris globally. He recalled Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's words that Kashmir runs in our blood, and even if it takes a thousand years of war, Pakistan will fight for Kashmir. He said August 5 marks the darkest day in Kashmir's history when its special status was revoked, and Kashmiris were stripped of their identity and rights. Advocate Parvez Ahmed lauded the Pakistani army's retaliation to India's 'Operation Sindoor' with their own 'Bunyan al Marsoos', which uplifted the spirits of Kashmiris after 70 years. He mentioned that India has deployed one million troops over 8 million Kashmiris, a stark reflection of its occupation. He praised PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's diplomatic efforts, which have proven that Pakistan stands firmly on the right side of history.
