News Corp boss issues warning on AI vandalism threats

News Corp's boss has issued a stern warning about the threat of artificial intelligence to creativity, as the company rolls out the technology across its newsrooms.
At the company's full-year results briefing in New York, chief executive Robert Thomson said the world found itself at a historic inflection point in the age of AI, in which it was essential to protect what he called America's comparative advantage in creativity.
"To undermine that comparative advantage by stripping away (intellectual property) rights is to vandalise our virtuosity," Mr Thomson said.
"We need to be more enlightened to eulogise eunoia socially and commercially."
Mr Thomson's eunoia - beautiful thinking or a harmonious goodwill towards others - avoided plumbing News Corp's rollout of AI tools NewsGPT and Story Cutter to its newsrooms.
But he was concerned about threats to intellectual property like Donald Trump's The Art of the Deal, a publication of News Corp's book division.
"Is it right that his books should be consumed by an AI engine which then profits from his thoughts by cannibalising content, thus undermining future sales?" Mr Thomson asked.
"The art of the deal has become the art of the steal."
The results briefing noted softening trends for News Corp's book publishing arm, due to the strong relative performance in the first half following strong sales of Hillbilly Elegy, the work of fellow author-turned-politician JD Vance.
Segment growth was also supported by an audiobook deal with streaming platform Spotify.
Lachlan and Rupert Murdoch were praised for their guidance in News Corp's overall performance, which boasted a two per cent lift in revenue to $US8.5 billion ($A13.1 billion), despite fading news media revenue.
Net income from continuing operations grew 71 per cent to $US648 million, up from $US379 million the previous year with Dow Jones and REA posting record revenues of $US2.3 billion and $US1.3 billion respectively.
"Fiscal 2025 marked a big step in the transformation of News Corp, as we continue to expand into high-margin content licensing and increase recurrent and digital revenues," chief financial officer Lavanya Chandrashekar said.
Weakness in news media subscriptions and declining advertising revenues was more than offset by the group's Dow Jones segment, which includes the Wall Street Journal and Barrons, along with REA Group, which owns realestate.com.au.
News Corp holds a controlling stake in REA, which posted double-digit increases to revenues and net profits on Wednesday thanks to higher listing prices.
Digital subscribers to News' Australian mastheads fell by roughly 50,000 over the financial year, while the New York Post's online subscriber pool slumped to 90 million from 117 million the year before, and from 112 million to 87 million for UK tabloid The Sun.
The Times and Sunday Times bucked the trend, growing their digital subscriber base from 594,000 to 640,000 over the year.
Despite the trend, news media profitability improved 15 per cent, which Mr Thomson attributed to the group's "editorial creativity" and cost consciousness, which included significant layoffs across brands in Australia, the US and UK.

Nor, thankfully, did the names Don Jnr, Eric or Ivanka come up. (Obviously Tiffany wasn't mentioned. Tiffany is never mentioned.) Instead, when asked by a reporter, 'Do you agree that the heir apparent to MAGA, is J.D. Vance?' Trump replied 'Well, I think most likely, in all fairness. He's the vice president … he's doing a great job and would probably be favourite at this point.' So just when we were all busy firming up our opinions on Sydney Sweeney, we find ourselves considering a future in which J.D. Vance is the president of the free world. Thinking about Vance is not something we've had to do lately. He has been comparatively quiet compared to the rest of the clown car cabinet, with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth polygraphing his colleagues, Transport Secretary Sean Duffy announcing plans to put a nuclear reactor on the moon and Kash Patel sneaking in for a quiet dinner with Tony Burke. Vance, trapped in the traditionally stultifying role of vice president, has barely made headlines except for the leaking of his Spotify Playlists. For someone who opposes gay marriage and trans rights, Vance's playlists are mystifyingly stacked with boybands and gay anthems. It is tempting to think that one of his playlists was titled 'Gold on the Ceiling' because that's what Vance sees while lying on the floor of the Oval Office, as Trump walks over him. However, seeing Vance as solely under Trump's heel, is a mistake. Vance's fate will be decided by the voters in MAGA heartland, not Trump, when the time comes to choose the 2028 Republican presidential nominee. One of the most remarkable twists in the MAGA story is that it's Trump, the billionaire, who became the hero to a movement overwhelmingly supported by lower socio-economic Americans. Because if there is anyone who truly embodies the American Dream, it's Vance – a real-life example of the rags-to-riches myth that is foundational to America's cultural identity. Vance grew up in impoverished communities in Kentucky and Ohio, where domestic violence, drug and alcohol addiction and neglect were the mundane facts of daily life. He is the 'hillbilly' who became a Marine, a Yale law graduate, a Silicone Valley venture capitalist, a senator and then vice-president of the United States. It is an extraordinary trajectory. Loading The D in J.D. originally stood for Donald, after his biological father. It was changed to David when he was six, with Vance writing in his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, that his mother changed it to erase any memory of his father's existence. He's had a similarly volatile relationship with the other Donald who has played a formative role in his life. Trump took a while to warm up to his eventual VP pick, which is unsurprising considering the vitriol that Vance had previously lobbed at his future boss. Given Vance's capitulation to Trump and MAGA, it is mind-bending to recall some of his past statements. The former self-proclaimed 'Never-Trump guy' famously once referred to Trump as ' America's Hitler'. As a Christian, he was appalled by the Access Hollywood tapes in which Trump boasted about sexually assaulting women. In an essay for The Atlantic, Vance wrote: ' Trump is cultural heroin. He makes some feel better for a bit. But he cannot fix what ails them, and one day they'll realise it.' He went on to declare his hope that one day in the future: '…the nation will trade the quick high of 'Make America Great Again' for real medicine'. Equating Trump to heroin was an intentionally devastating critique coming from Vance, whose was traumatised as a child by his mother's drug addiction. Vance always went much further and deeper than other commentators, in his analysis of Trump's unfitness to represent the people from the Rust Belt, who were now hailing the billionaire New York property developer as their saviour. He knew that Trump did not have the solutions that a white working class devastated by both the opioids crisis and the endemic loss of blue-collar manufacturing jobs so desperately needed.

News Corp's local papers bleed subscribers, compounding revenue struggles

Three of News Corp's top daily Australian tabloids lost subscribers across the 2025 financial year, contributing to the company's poor local results reported on Wednesday. The Herald Sun, The Courier Mail in Brisbane and Adelaide's The Advertiser all suffered paid-subscriber losses, while national masthead The Australian was the only paper to grow in successive years, according to new overnight corporate filings. The local numbers contrast with the company's decision to launch a new state-based print product based in Los Angeles, The California Post, which will be led by the Herald Sun 's weekend editor, Nick Papps, despite helping oversee subscriber losses across the year. The Herald Sun remains News Corp's largest state-based tabloid, despite losing 1 per cent of its customers, dropping to 153,983 paying subscribers across both print and digital. It was joined by The Advertiser, which lost 2 per cent of its customers, dropping to 106,969, and The Courier Mail, which also lost 1 per cent, dropping to 144,044, despite being the only print publication in Brisbane. The Australian continues to grow, now with 335,903 subscribers, up 4 per cent, while Sydney-based The Daily Telegraph was the only major city tabloid to grow its subscriber base after losses last year, jumping nearly 5 per cent to 151,336. However, it still has fewer paying subscribers compared with two years ago. News Corp posted a strong financial result on Wednesday, impressing shareholders with record profits despite continuing negative revenue trends in Australia. Revenue from circulation, subscriptions and advertising suffered, part of a long-term trend. News Corp will hope its cost-cutting measures in 2024 has improved its local financial fitness, with its 2024 finances, posted in late last year to Australia's corporate regulator showing a net loss of $43.3 million after tax, compared with a $17.9 million profit the year prior.
