SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A woman from Pierre is being recognized for her work in making mental health resources more accessible for people across South Dakota and beyond. Jill Janecke is one of this year's Remarkable Women winners.
Janecke has spent the last 12 years building up Rising Hope Counseling, a clinic designed to help anyone no matter where they live improve their mental health.
'Sometimes I think in rural areas, in our communities, it's like a such a private thing and that you're not supposed to talk about it. And being there and being the, you know, a shine of hope in those communities and letting them know it's okay to talk,' Janecke said.
Rising Hope Counseling started in Pierre in 2013 and now has over 20 locations across the state, as well as services in Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska.
Janecke says she feels honored so many people have been positively impacted by her work. And is excited to head out to Hollywood to meet other remarkable women across the country.
'When you're in a business and you're always helping other people, it'll be awesome just to be able to take that time and and have some self-care, which is always super important in our industry as well,' Janecke said.
Janecke was awarded a $1,000 donation to a charity of her choice from KELOLAND Media Group. Janecke said the money will be used to continue her mission at Rising Hope and uplift the staff who help patients everyday.
'Rising Hope has a mission to help everyone in rural areas. And really, all of South Dakota is rural. And so my individual as Jill Janecke, my really passion is to look at my remarkable staff and how can I make sure that they're healthy,' Janecke said.
And now she is being recognized for all her hard work.
Janecke, along with our other winner Abby Martinez, will travel to Hollywood, California mid-April for the national Remarkable Women conference, where they will both represent South Dakota.

OSF Healthcare now offering scalp cooling for cancer patients

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A new service being offered at OSF Healthcare is helping patients going through chemotherapy. It's called scalp cooling, and it's a first-of-its-kind service being offered in our area. It's a non-invasive, free treatment designed to reduce hair loss during chemotherapy. It works by lowering the temperature of your scalp down to 65 degrees before, during and after chemo. Scalp cooling helps cancer patients keep as much of their hair as possible, which in turn, helps their mental health. Our 2025 Remarkable Women winner, Patricia Cutiletta, had a huge part in bringing this service to our area. 'Well, it has nothing to do with vanity,' Cutiletta said. 'I had an oncologist who said to me, oh, that's for vain people. It's not. It's for people who want to preserve some sense of identity. It's for people who want to continue as much of their normal lifestyle as they can. And it's for people who want something that they can try and control.' The scalp cooling service is part of OSF Healthcare's START program. Which stands for survive, thrive and recover together. There's more than just scalp cooling. Patients can also get personalized care to help navigate their 'new normal' with confidence. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. New resource center aims to ease burden for families battling cancer

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — Families caring for loved ones with cancer may soon find some much-needed help thanks to a new community resource center launched by a Lowcountry nonprofit. Jeans Angels, founded by one of News 2's Remarkable Women finalists, Katrina Carpenter, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week to unveil the new facility designed to support caregivers and patients facing serious health-related challenges. 'This is a place where people can come and feel at home,' said Carpenter. 'It's not about handouts—it's about hope, healing, and love.' The center, located in Berkeley County, offers free food, clothing, cosmetics, home decor, and other essentials to those in need. While the space is open to everyone, it's especially focused on supporting caregivers of cancer patients a group often overlooked during such difficult journeys. The effort is deeply personal for Carpenter, who founded the nonprofit in memory of her mother, Jean, who passed away from cancer. She says the facility is her way of continuing her mother's legacy by spreading compassion and connection throughout the Tri-County area. Cancer survivor and volunteer Jloundia Pinckney shared how much the space could mean to others like her. 'It gives us hope—especially cancer survivors. We deal with anxiety and fear of it returning,' she said. 'But when we come here, we feel at home. We feel loved.' Carpenter hopes the space will become a lifeline for those feeling overwhelmed or alone. The organization also offers other services during the week, including free showers for those in need. 'Just call me the 'lady of love,'' Carpenter said. 'That's what we're trying to pour into this community—just love.' The center will officially open its doors Friday, with plans to serve its first 50 families navigating a cancer diagnosis.
