Old oil paintings are suffering from chemical 'acne'
WHEN AN OIL painting is dried and finished, it is supposed to stay that way. Yet when Ida Bronken, an art conservator, began to prepare Jean-Paul Riopelle's 'Composition 1952' for display in 2006, she noticed drops of wet paint were trickling down the canvas from deep within the masterpiece's layers. Equally odd were the tiny, hard, white lumps poking through the painting's surface, as if it had a case of adolescent acne. Other sections seemed soft and moist; some paint layers were coming apart 'like two pieces of buttered bread', Ms Bronken says.

A star cast leads in true crime story The Gold, airing on BBC1 tonight
The Gold on BBC1 returns for a second series, following the aftermath of the shocking real life Brink's-Mat robbery on 1983 Inspired by real events and several conspiracy theories, The Gold (on BBC1 tonight, June 10th, at 9pm) is a thrilling drama about the largest robbery in world history. The theft of £26 million worth of gold bullion from the Brink's-Mat depot in Heathrow in 1983 sparked a decades-long chain of events. Series two, starring Hugh Bonneville, Tom Cullen, Stefanie Martini, Stephen Campbell Moore, Sam Spruell and Tom Hughes, started last night, to pick up the story. After several years of investigation and multiple court cases and convictions, the police realised they had only ever been on the trail of half of the Brink's-Mat gold. The opening credits announce: 'This is our story of the other half.' It follows the conviction of some of those involved in the theft and handling the gold as well as the criminal fortune the money created. Last night's episode saw Miller (Spruell) contact financial advisor Douglas Baxter (Joshua McGuire), having heard that he could clean money - so he gave him £10 million to invest. However, it seems that greedy Baxter decided to blow some of the cash on a Rolex and several bottles of champagne. Baxter also tries to use his new job to kickstart a new business. In tonight's second episode, as the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime. The detectives embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police. *The Gold continues on BBC1 tonight at 9pm There's plenty more on TV tonight - here's the best of the rest.. THE YORKSHIRE VET: AT HOME WITH THE GREENS, 5, 9pm Clocking in at 96 years old, Steve Green is surely the oldest working farmer in the country. Side by side with Jean, his wife of 45 years, the elderly couple still get up at 6.45am every day to keep their Stoneybrough Farm ticking over. This charming little series follows the endearing pair as they reminisce and also look to the future of their farm, aided by long time vet and friend Peter Wright, who describes them as 'like two smitten teenagers'. Jean says: 'When I first came it was all farm, but now it's nothing but houses and we're the only ones keeping farming going. There'll be no green acres left.' After researching the history of their Thirsk farm, they discover the land dates back to 1706, so they wonder if any of the spirits of Stoneybrough remain. Paranormal investigators are called in for a ghost hunt. In other news, calves Toffee and Apple get pneumonia and Jean wants a tattoo. TRAINWRECK: THE ASTROWORLD TRAGEDY, NETFLIX Fans at the tragic Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas, recall the horror of being caught in the deadly crowd surge in this compelling documentary. On November 5, 2021, American rapper and singer Travis Scott stepped on stage to perform his set at Astroworld. But what should have been the best night of the festival-goers lives quickly turned into a catastrophe that left ten of them dead and hundreds injured. One woman recalls: 'I'm like, 'Oh my God, I can't take a deep breath' I fell on someone, because people were falling on me.' Another festival-goer adds: 'The music started playing and you just felt your whole body move forward. And then the wave comes back.' BBC1, 9pm Actor, writer and comedian Diane Morgan – better known as clueless historian Philomena Cunk – is unsettled to find herself having to genuinely go in search of the truth as she talks to experts to uncover her family history. Diane's father died six years ago. They had started a family tree, but there are still mysteries to solve. Diane assumed all her dad's family came from the North of England, but remembers him talking about 'German Charlie'. She's also keen to investigate rumours of a Scottish connection. EASTENDERS, BBC1, 7.30pm It's tense as Elaine stews over George helping Cindy at The Albert. Just as things start to thaw between them and Elaine surprises George with a gift, Junior storms in with a revelation. Kat is still shocked by the explicit video on Alfie's laptop, not realising that Tommy is the culprit. Yolande is hurt when Patrick makes excuses to get out of giving her a massage. Wedding planner Kim is frustrated by some snags for Kat and Alfie's big day.

Yorkshire Vet star, 73, unveils her 'first-ever tattoo' in spin-off
Farmers Steve and Jean Green have returned with their spin-off show alongside Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright, and feisty Jean caused a surprise during filming when she revealed her first inking Yorkshire Vet farmer Jean Green, 73, shocked her husband Steve, 96 when she revealed she had visited a local tattoo parlour during filming of the spin off series At Home With The Greens earlier this year. Jean enlisted pal Peter Wright 's help in getting her first inking of a Yorkshire Rose on her arm. 'Stephen had said to his daughter [Sarah, now 40] that if she ever came home with a tattoo, she would be kicked out,' says Peter. 'I don't think he would have carried that out, he is such a gentle man. But when Jean came home with the tattoo on her arm, his face was a picture, and you could see in his mind that the old cogs were whirling away in there and he wasn't quite sure how to take it.' Known as Britain's oldest farming couple, Steve and Jean have been married for more than 40 years and have been friends with Peter for just as long. 'I got to know them well when I was young,' Peter says. 'They became one of my regular clients when I started work in Thirsk in 1982. I had this banter with Mrs Green right from the word go, and we've always had a close relationship. I've always loved going to their farm because of the banter we have.' Jean, with her brightly coloured sweatshirts and silver bracelets jangling from her wrists, is something of a tour de force on the series, while her husband appears to be much quieter, although Peter says that still waters run deep when it comes to the veteran farmer. 'Stephen is more of a thinker, but once you get him going he's quite a conversationalist. When they were in the first flush of love, he would sit on his tractor out in a field, and he showed me some of the poems he would write to Jean there. When they renewed their wedding vows after 40 years, he produced one of the poems out of his pocket, which I thought was rather nice.' Yorkshire vet Peter describes the couple as like 'two lovestruck teenagers' and reveals that Steve and Jean had not spent a night apart until Jean was admitted to hospital for surgery during filming. 'They'd never been apart for a single night up until that point and that just typifies their relationship. There's no cross words whatsoever, but there's lots of fun and joy along the way. It sounds corny, but it's true.' The Greens, who run Stoneybrough Farm in Thirsk, have a huge following amongst Yorkshire Vet fans, and Peter notes that Jean embraces their popularity, often calling to ask what the weekly viewing figures for the show are and enjoying the letters and packages sent by viewers around the world. 'We get oven gloves, coffee, biscuits, calendars, little kangaroo pouches, random stuff,' he says. 'Jean loves it, she can't wait to open a parcel – not knowing what is inside is a huge attraction for her.'

EastEnders' Jean tries to sabotage Kat's happiness in cruel move
Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) has made a cruel attempt at ruining cousin Kat's (Jessie Wallace) 'hag do' in EastEnders – as a last-ditch attempt is made to salvage their relationship. As viewers of the BBC One soap saw earlier this week, an emotional Jean lashed out upon realising that Kat had teamed up with her ex-partner Harvey Monroe (Ross Boatman) for a new business venture. The deal came just weeks after his affair with Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth) was exposed, something which mortified her. Rushing away from Walford to spend time with Mo Harris (Laila Morse) and Fat Elvis, Kat was left to pick up the pieces in the Slater household. Harvey was offered a lucrative purchase – a limousine that could be used for wedding photoshoots. He couldn't afford it, but the seller thought up a cunning scheme to get his cash. Kat signed on the dotted line, unaware of the other bidder being Harvey. She was furious, but alongside partner Alfie (Shane Richie), decided they should capitalise on the mishap by getting him to fork out for the publicity. Alfie had an even better plan. He got down on one knee, and proposed. They could have a proper reception, and not have to pay for half of it! As they celebrated in The Vic, and with Kim Fox (Tameka Empson) quickly arranging a joint stag and hen do, Jean strolled in and assumed that they were all happy to see her return. But that wasn't the case. She felt excluded from the wedding, and was enraged to hear that Harvey was Kat's business partner. Dealing a slap, she told Kat that she was more than welcome to adopt the Moon moniker once again, as she was no longer a Slater. In tonight's episode, damage control began. Alfie urges Kat to put things right, but when she headed to speak with Jean, a huge argument broke out. Kat said that it was Jean's fault that Harvey strayed, and she needed to stop wallowing in self pity. With the hag do in full swing, and everyone donning leopard print, floral shirts and leather jackets, someone snuck into the corridor at Harry's Barn. It was Jean.
