BBC EastEnders: When did it begin and will it ever end?
The soap opera is also one of the most popular in the UK, standing among other TV titans like Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Whether you are a seasoned fan or someone just getting into the programme, you may be interested in learning more about this British institution. EastEnders came on the scene much later than its rivals, first airing on February 19, 1985, according to the BBC. The Manchester-based drama Coronation Street, on the other hand, is the longest-running television soap opera in the UK, first airing in 1960. At the moment, there is no immediate indication that the BBC show will come to an end, with the programme averaging a viewership of around five million. The Irish News states that it is also the most-watched show on iPlayer, securing its position in the broadcaster's roster of shows. Those wanting to watch every episode of EastEnders from 1985 onwards may have a tricky time. Episodes from 2008 to the current day can be accessed on BBC iPlayer, while those wanting to watch a limited number of installations before this time can do so on platforms like U and Drama on Freeview and Sky. However, some of "the all-time greatest doof doofs, deaths and dramas" of the classic era are available in the form of compilations on iPlayer. One fan on Reddit also recommended searching through eBay for sales of DVDs and videos. They said: "Search eBay on the regular as offers for full years or the whole Archive are often available for limited periods." The user added: "This can be pricey, however, so explore what offers there are and what years you really want." Forums may also be an option, with fans able to put out requests for older episodes.

Near hits: 13 songs performed by artists after being turned down by musicians
Would Kylie's recent smash hit Padam Padam have been quite as successful if it had been sung by Rita Ora? That's the question being asked by Ora herself, after admitting she nearly sang it. The 2023 track, penned by Lostboy, was initially considered for Rita Ora before it ultimately became Kylie Minogue's much-lauded comeback hit. Despite this, the 34-year-old singer has expressed no ill will about not recording the song. Speaking to the Daily Star, the British singer revealed that there were no hard feelings that the Australian pop icon ended up performing the song instead: 'I've always grown up with this saying, 'What's for you won't pass you'. And that's always how I've lived my life. And it's Kylie Minogue - she's the queen of the world, in my opinion. So, of course, Kylie's going to get it and kill it and do a great job. 'And in the pop industry, that happens every day to a lot of big artists - you just don't know about it." But Rita Ora isn't the only musician who either turned down, or was passed over, a song that went on to become a smash hit for another pop culture icon. Check out 13 of the near hits that could have occurred if the butterfly effect had been different. 1 . Baby One More Time (Britney Spears) This iconic track was famously offered to R&B group TLC and Swedish singer Robyn. TLC reportedly passed on it because they felt it didn't fit their image, and Robyn wasn't ready to release it. Instead, it went to Britney Spears and launched her into superstardom, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and topping the charts in the UK, Canada, Australia, and many other countries globally. | Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Call Me Maybe (Carly Rae Jepsen) This incredibly catchy pop anthem was reportedly offered to Selena Gomez and even Justin Bieber (before he championed Jepsen's version) who both passed on it. It then became a massive breakthrough hit for Carly Rae Jepsen, spending 9 consecutive weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and topping the charts in the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and numerous other countries worldwide. | Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Don't Cha (The Pussycat Dolls ft. Busta Rhymes) This catchy track was reportedly offered to socialite Paris Hilton and the British girl group Sugababes before it became a breakout hit for The Pussycat Dolls. Don't Cha was a huge international success, peaking at number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topping the charts in 15 countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, and Ireland. | Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Gold Digger (Kanye West ft. Jamie Foxx) This massive hit was originally written by Kanye West with a female rapper, Shawnna, in mind, but she decided not to use it. Gold Digger was a colossal hit for Kanye West, spending 10 consecutive weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. It also reached number 2 in the UK and was a top 10 hit in Australia, Canada, and Ireland. | Getty Images Photo Sales

Ed Sheeran says he identifies culturally as Irish
Ed Sheeran says he identifies culturally as Irish The Galway Girl singer, 34, who was brought up in Suffolk, has a large Irish family and said he would spend his holidays in the country as a child Ed Sheeran (Image: Colin Lane/Liverpool Echo ) Pop singer Ed Sheeran has said he identifies culturally as Irish despite being born and raised in England. The Galway Girl singer, 34, who was brought up in Suffolk, has a large Irish family and said he would spend his holidays in the country as a child. "I class my culture as Irish. I think that's what I grew up with," he told The Louis Theroux Podcast. "My mum's family is very, very small, it's her and her parents, and my dad's family is... he's got seven brothers and sisters. "We'd spend all of our holidays in Ireland. My first musical experiences were in Ireland, I grew up with trad music in the house. So I identify culturally as Irish, but I was obviously born and raised in Britain. "I do feel like my culture is something that I'm really proud of and grew up with and want to express. Article continues below "And I feel like just because I was born in Britain doesn't necessarily mean that I have to just be (British), there's loads of people I know that are half this or quarter this." He added: "I don't think there's any rules to it. It should be how you feel and how you were raised and what you lean into." Asked if he gets "a lot of love" in Ireland, he said: "I'd say it's basically my second home musically. I'd say Ireland is the place that I am most successful musically." Sheeran previously told BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs that he has Irish family and spent most of his childhood summers, birthdays and Christmases in the country. Also on the podcast, Sheeran reflected on the drawbacks of fame and said he is "really sensitive" to people taking pictures of his children. "My first daughter, six weeks after she was born, we hadn't sent any photos of her whatsoever, but there was paparazzi outside our house that got a photo of her, and it was in the paper and I just found it weird that some strange old man that I'd never met was the only person with an image of my kid on their device. "It's a strange trade-off because, obviously, to be successful in the music industry, you end up being rich, famous and successful, and those things are things that people go, 'Well, that's the trade-off.' "But my kids have not signed up to that, and I find it weird that it's normal to take pictures of other people's children if they're famous." Sheeran is married to Cherry Seaborn and the couple have two children. Article continues below The four-time Grammy-winning singer also revealed that he does not own a private jet and likes to travel via train. "I like the environment, I like trees. I'd find it hard to justify. No one's perfect. When we're doing intense promo trips, there will be the odd time", he told Theroux.
