Bomb disposal expert from the Isle of Man dies while volunteering in Ukraine

ITV News07-05-2025
A bomb disposal expert from the Isle of Man has died, following severe injuries while dismantling an improvised explosive device.
Chris Garrett, from Peel, had dedicated years to clearing landmines in Ukraine, and stepped following the Russian invasion in February 2022.
Mr Garrett co-founded the charity Prevail Together, which has been disarming and detonating explosive devices placed around Ukraine.
Garrett, known by the call sign 'Swampy,' had been involved in mine clearance and humanitarian efforts in Ukraine since 2014. He joined the Azov Regiment as an EOD specialist, providing training and support to Ukrainian forces.
Prevail Together Ambassador and board member Shaun Pinner confirmed Mr Garrett had died in the city of Izyum on Tuesday 6 May.
Posting on X, Mr Pinner said: 'It has now been confirmed that two of the three critically injured individuals have sadly passed away. I can confirm that Chris was among those who died. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected.
'We deeply appreciate all the support during this difficult time. Prevail will share further updates as soon as we coordinate with the investigation teams over the next 48hours. We can't and will not comment during an ongoing investigation.'
Another man, thought to be an Australian national, also died as a result of the incident.
Mr Garrett spoke to ITV at the beginning of April, after he was sentenced to 14 ½ years in jail by a Russian proxy court.
Speaking then, he said: "I don't really know what to say about it, the charges are ridiculous. I mean, charged for terrorism by volunteering, or at times, being under contract by the Ukrainian armed forces.
"I've not once stepped foot out of Ukraine towards, Belarus. I've never been to Russia, I've never been involved in any actions directly on the border."
The 42-year-old had been using his skills as a bomb disposal expert to blow up artillery shells and live ammunition dumped by Vladimir Putin's retreating troops.
He said: "There's a lot of IEDs going in the ground. And now with the drone munitions as well, the FPB drones, this has created a whole new sphere where it used to just be a case that we had landmines and IEDs.
"Now we have flying IEDs as well, which can end up in places you'd never expect them."

Sea mine explosions kill three Ukrainian swimmers

Three Ukrainian beachgoers have been killed by sea mines while swimming off the Black Sea coast. A man died when a device exploded 50 metres from the shore near the resort of Karolino-Bugaz, in the Odesa region, at 11.30am local time on Sunday, Ukrainian media reported. A woman and another man were killed in a separate explosion in waters off the nearby town of Zatoka, around 40 miles south of Odesa city. Oleg Kiper, the regional governor, said the blasts happened in areas that had been closed off to swimmers, and warned that lives were being lost because of people ignoring the bans. 'All of them were blown up by explosive objects while swimming in areas prohibited for recreation,' he wrote. 'This proves once again that being in unverified waters is deadly.' Footage showed water shooting into the air off a busy beach with dozens of people in the water while a woman said: 'Oh God… something's exploded over there'. Local media said police and explosive technicians were investigating the incident. Police said they had not yet confirmed the identity of the swimmers, warning visitors 'not to neglect safety measures'. 'It has been previously determined that three vacationers – a woman and two men – died while swimming as a result of two explosions of unknown objects. The identities of the deceased are being established,' a police report read. Mr Kiper said there were 32 areas permitted for swimming in the Odesa region that had undergone 'comprehensive inspection' to ensure they were free of mines. Thirty are in the city of Odesa, while the other two are in Chornomorsk and Prymorske. The Black Sea is infested with mines dropped by both sides of the war in Ukraine. They are mainly deployed to defend ports, but Russia has been accused of using them to target Ukrainian shipping lanes. It is not known whether the mines involved in Sunday's incidents were Russian or Ukrainian, or how they drifted close to the beaches. Before the war, both Moscow and Kyiv were known to have stockpiles of Soviet-era YaM anchor mines, which are tethered to the seabed with a chain and float a few metres below the surface. They are typically used in waters up to 200 metres deep and contain around 20kg of explosives. Other mines found in the Black Sea since the 2022 invasion include R-421-75 contact mines, which carry up to 160kg of explosives and can be moored with a chain or deployed to drift on or just below the surface. Vladimir Putin's dad 'gouged out his mum's eye with pitchfork in fit of rage'

A bombshell new book about Russian President Vladimir Putin's life claims his dad gouged out his mum's eye with a pitchfork during 'a fit of rage' Vladimir Putin's father gouged out his mother's eye with a pitchfork when she was just 17 years old, according to a bombshell new book. ‌ The alleged attack led to the evil dictator's mum, Maria, losing her eye and his dad being forced to marry her. The bizarre story emerged from a new book titled The Tsar in Person: How Vladimir Putin Fooled Us All, which details the despot's life before he took over in Moscow. ‌ It claims the attack came during "a fit of rage" from Putin's dad, before the couple were married. It comes as Putin warns of nuclear war after unleashing another night of hell on Ukraine. ‌ The book explains Putin's father arrived with male friends at Maria's - known as Marusya - home when she was alone in her village in Tver region, in 1928. In the account, villager Anfisa Kormilitsyna said: "Marusya didn't want to let them in." The villager said this appeared to enrage Putin's dad, adding: "They took the pitchfork that was standing by the fence and started breaking down the gate. She got scared, ran out of the house, and raced up to the fence. ‌ "And Volodka [Vladimir senior, Putin's father] at that moment broke through the gate with the pitchfork and hit Marusya right in the face. "In short, he accidentally gouged out her eye. He took her to the hospital right away. There, Marusya's eye was removed." ‌ The villager also revealed the sad reason as to why the two got married after this alleged incident. She said: "For a girl in those days, this was a disgrace. "So Marusya's mother threatened Volodka: if you don't marry, I'll put you on trial. So they got married. Marusya was very embarrassed about her glass eye later, never looked you in the face when talking, and tilted her head to the side." ‌ The villager also said Putin's father was notorious for terrorising teenage girls Anfisa added: "He liked to lift up girls' skirts and tie them in a knot over their heads. Co-author Roman Badanin said this was so the village boys could get a better look at the girl's knickers." Independent Russian news outlet Proekt reported: "Putin's mother had been one-eyed since her youth because the other eye had been put out with a pitchfork in a fit of rage by the father of the future Russian leader." Despite this harrowing account, Putin has only spoken ever about how his parents were perfect. His mother was over 40 by the time she gave birth to the future spy and dictator, triggering rumours that he was adopted or the child of a lover. Last year he recounted: "Never - I want to emphasise this - never did I see my father drunk. That never happened at all. I'm not even talking about my mother. I never heard a single swear word from him. Not one. Well, I'm not even talking about my mother here either." The authors accused Putin of covering up his personal life."
